Hi so bit of a heavy question so feel free to not answer if its a bit much.

How do you balance supporting people with NPD and those who have been abused by NPD individuals? I want to advocate for all mentally ill people, and i am one myself, but i was also abused for years by someone with NPD. How can i advocate for NPD people while keeping myself safe?

This is a genuine question not trying to be hurtful or insulting.

Glad you're here to genuinely learn, don't worry too much about it, I'll try my best to make this understandable to read, though I'm not the best with words all the time.

So preface by saying think of it this way, people with NPD are very often the way they are due to trauma and sometimes even were abused themselves. Not the only cause of NPD, but it's definitely one of them. Being a narcissist doesn't inherently make someone a bad person or abuser. NPD in itself is a form of protecting oneself. It's not always nice to admit, but a big thing about NPD is the whole thing is meant to protect the individual having a very low self esteem by inflating their ego and self worth in some way (how depends on the person)

When it comes to being abused by someone with NPD, it's not that them being a narcissist itself is what makes them an abuser, the mental condition isn't the problem, it's the individual person. Anyone with anything can be an abuser or be abused. Take autism for example, and the term narc abuse to refer to abuse done by pwNPD or those perceived as narcs by people who demonize NPD and don't actually understand what it is. If you got abused by someone who was autistic though, you wouldn't call it autistic abuse, you'd just call it abuse. Physical, mental, etc. Abuse isn't defined by who does it or what they have, it's defined by what the actions are. Judge the person by what they do, not just having a mental condition they have no control over having in the first place.

Everyone can be a piece of shit, being or not being a narcissist doesn't decide if someone's an abuser or not. Hopefully this made sense, once again I'm glad you came to genuinely learn. If you're still confused by what I said, I'd say have a look at what others with NPD on this site have said about it too, like I said I'm not always great with words. For my other pwNPD seeing this too feel free to leave your own thoughts too.

I hate fixating on hoyo media but I was rewatching xiao’s quest because I love her and I really like how she handles Paimon’s empathy. Xiao is very obviously someone who is very uncomfortable with pity and sympathy directed towards him as he already has enough guilt, and yet he does not snap at paimon. She knows it’s a natural mortal response to give condolences and especially with the chasm quest (lowkey been only playing that because I’m missing Minecraft) i believe Xiao really doesn’t dislike Paimon.

He doesn’t usually attach to mortals and doesn’t show much affection for the mortals he likes and yet with the traveler and paimon she’ll speak softly to them when otherwise she wouldn’t even show herself
