EX4: Volumetric Assembly Iterations
RESPONSE 11: During the existence of the mass-produced 3d printer, I have seen it as a luxury. Only a few times throughout my architectural education have I needed to 3d print. ABS plastic is the only material which I ever needed for any presentation. What I am attempting to get across is that the need for different materials for 3d printed should not come off as a problem or issue. I am well aware that 3d printers have the ability to print with various materials, e.g., ABS plastic, metal, onyx, carbon fiber, and others. Only during a specific circumstance did I need to print with a material other than ABS plastic which I could have easily done and then spray painted for a similar look. It would be great if 3d printers could do more but I believe there should still be a sense of ownership when it comes to the development and creation of our own work.
RESPONSE 10: I find the use and applications of materials to be rather fascinating. Their ability to be deployed in various scenarios and scales give them such diversity in that their potential for types of architectural performance is seemingly limitless. In the past, I was in a âmaterials and construction processesâ course focused on material limitations through their natural behaviors and behaviors when forced to interact with other materials. Different types of fabric were the primary material used in the various studies which began with ideas of how we can create small iterative models with potential for increases in scale and performance in a variety of scenarios. The reading seems to dig deeper into the idea of theory, model, applications, performance, and scale. I believe this to be important in terms of the âbigger pictureâ with how materials can further be deployed into architecture not just as details but as components and elements that act more than just parts in a whole.
RESPONSE 5:Â Control. This is the word that comes to mind when reading âAnimate Form.â Who and what is in control, the individual or the application in which they are using to conceptualize, develop, or create. I perceive animation as a calculated set of still images which are sequentially shown within a specific timeframe. The viewer is not aware of the still images because they are only aware of the movement at play. For instance, there are two designers/animators, the first has control of the still images and the second does not; which one will create a more robust animation? The first one of course. Control and understanding need to be applied when dealing with the concept of creating something from nothing. Control can happen in the analog or digital. The digital-only has control over the user when the user is not self-aware. Unfortunately, that is the case majority of the time. Lynn talks about points, vertices, splines, and their respective mediums. In terms of architecture, I believe that animation is not always present and should not blindly be applied by the user at every instance. Only when the architect(s) have control and understanding of these tools (and their parameters) will they be able to attempt to animate their designs. Not animation in terms physical movement, but rather implied movement when viewing a still moment or through an experiential procession in a design. Everything cannot be animated because then you have to ask the question; not âwhat is animation?â, but what does it mean for something to be animated?
Assignment 5: Low Relief Model
RESPONSE 9: The jig. Seen by many as the modern day lazy way of doing things. Perhaps the act of employing a jig in oneâs workflow or process over time diminishes their cognitive ability. At least that is the theme which is most evident in Crawfordâs writings. For instance, the âchef cooking in the kitchenâ is a far cry example from the readings message. The mass production of consumer-based goods did not help the argument because it is an easy target to force upon the idea of reduced cognitive ability. Crawford may be attempting to bring this âissueâ to light, but I do not see it as such (an issue). The state of (for the lack of a better term) mindlessly completing tasks is not, in my opinion, a loss of cognitive ability, but rather a whole and instinctual state where oneâs sense have fully adapted (or can adapt) to a particular task.
Assignment 3
Hyperbolic Paraboloid in motion...kind of. RESPONSE 1: It is rather interesting to rethink what it means to be human in the world of analogue and digital. Time continues, and with technology and our understanding of what it means to understand as a human race evolves at a seemingly equal rate. Personally, I am compelled to ask myself, "how digital am I?" and if the answer is remotely important in the grand scheme of the digital landscape. Perhaps yes, because without awareness of my changing habits am I still myself at that point or rather a pawn in the universes scheme. Otl clearly alludes to our attachment or lack thereof to the world around us. What do our relationships consists of and is a minute lost or gained per year a determining factor in our decision making? Well, only time and self-awareness can tell how digital I've become.
