Yū in three words: restless, callous, eccentric
Giselle in three words: lonesome, fretful, perfectionist
Ezequiel in three words: affable, perceptive, idealistic
She has become so meaningful to me
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH AND I TREASURE IT!!! SHE LOOKS SO PRETTY AND GLOOMY , IT'S PERFECT!!! If only she knew people would grow fond of her fast
Trying to make up fake countries and ethnicities for my Earth is HARD but I have many decent ones so far.
Cruvia (exonym) / E'kruwia (endonym) - A tropical country that used to be a great, much bigger nation in older times, having kept a large amount of heritage away from the hands of greedy explorers. There has been much emigration from the 19th century onwards. The economy is stagnant. Related characters: Giselle.
Bargoria / Brahorya- A continental country in the Northern hemisphere, full of mountains and forests. A center of scientific activity, as the government provides freedom and encouragement when it comes to investigation. Growing economy. Related characters: Giselle.
Nilean Federation / Nìhuorahán- Federation of isles in the great ocean and an adjacent territory with a long coast, where most of the big cities are. The economy is growing very slowly. Related characters: Yū.
Izaks/ The izhleg - One of the ethnic groups that resided in a country adjacent to Bargoria for hundreds of years. There's diaspora all over the world. Related characters: Ezequiel
Unified Republic of Meridica/ Meridica - One of the most powerful countries of the 20th century, whose foundation was built on the interest of fortune- seekers in the era of navigation, a colony bordering with an empire. Generally cold weather, large reserve of minerals. The economy is growing slowly. Related characters: Yū and Ezequiel.
Ezequiel I
I met him at a vacation resort in 1966, before I started medical school. My parents and I were staying at a hotel right in front of a beautiful shoreline.
I couldn't sleep a wink that night. The room felt stuffy, and I kept falling into light sleep and waking up with a feeling of vertigo. This had been going on since I started studying for finals earlier that year. I decided to step outside to get some fresh air, so I sneaked out to the beach. The outdoor safety lamps were still on, softly glowing close to the shore before the black expanse of the ocean. The cool, salty sea breeze enveloped my skin. I felt more relaxed in an instant, as if the wind rocked my senses to sleep.
All of a sudden, I realized I was not alone. There was a young man sitting by himself not too far from me. He was leaning back on the sand and looking up at the night sky. Even in the dim light, I could tell he was handsome, with a clean-shaven pale face that seemed to glow like a ghost's and long hair that was darker than dark. I shuddered lightly, perhaps from a chill. Seeing he didn't seem to notice me, I stood up and went over to talk to him. I wouldn't have guessed it immediately by his appearance alone, but upon hearing his accent it was evident that he was a fellow countryman, most likely on vacation as well. I also learnt we studied at the same university. He told me he'd gone out to look at the stars at night. That sometimes, he went to sleep early simply to wake and watch the night sky truly awaken at the best hour of the night, and then slept for a short time until morning (that is, if he slept at all). Despite the strangeness of the situation, the young man was not at all awkward or as proud as he looked, and came across as rather charming. We talked for a long time, but I barely learnt anything about him.
After we parted, I realized I'd forgotten to ask his name, or any way to contact him. I also noticed his clothes (he was wearing a dress shirt and his pants were rolled up) were soaked as he walked away, and felt silly for overlooking it all that time we spent talking.
The next day, I tried looking for him among the other people in the resort, but didn't see him anywhere. I even asked about him, but I seemed to be the only one who'd seen him. Of course, this idea was ridiculous, but my naive, young self wanted it to be true. To this day, I wonder if he was lying about having been a guest in that resort. I don't know, I never brought it up again. I spent the rest of the summer thinking of that night until the memory burnt out and was shelved into the back of my brain.
The year I started medical school, that is, after summer ended, I spotted him at an event on campus, sharply dressed, smoking a cigarette. In that moment, it was like there was nobody else.
Oh my god it's him...
The incident, as lived by Giselle
Giselle had met Yū for the first time in 1972, at the age of 30, seven years prior to the incident. By then, he was already close to Ezequiel and both of them moved into the continent while searching for a better environment for Yū's projects. Even Ezequiel, who held such deep admiration for him, was skeptical about the completion of the "idea" in his restless mind. Giselle was the first person who believed in him with all her heart and her intellect. And thanks to her vision, his blueprints could start to come to life.
However, this charming and often eccentric man was a very callous person. The longer they worked together, the less he cared about her motives for working alongside him, as long as he got exactly what he wanted.
Deep down, she knew that he was like something out of this world that could pretend to be human for a while, but who would miss its natural place forever. They made love sporadically, and it was always followed by a period of uneasiness. Her loneliness was so profound that she couldn't give it up: surely those moments that felt like a genuine connection had to mean something. As a woman seeking companionship, she waited for a proposal, as a scientist, she poured her passion in what she saw as a magnificent project.
The closer they got to the completion of the machine, the more burned out she felt. Why wasn't she happy? As time passed, she realized the extent to which she had been exploited as a person. Her meek heart was drowning in spite. And so, she did something extreme... After several successful experiments, she sabotaged the machine right before the big day. She told herself that afterwards, she would simply leave.
Well, you probably already knew the rest. When they forced the pod open, his half- molten body was just lying there. Had she killed him?
What followed was an extremely stressful period of her life. Her and Ezequiel were persecuted by authorities and accused of deliberately murdering their colleague. They had to prove that it was an accident provoked by an excessive ambition. She remained silent about what truly happened. She barely remembers anything that happened after the trials. He appeared in her dreams a lot.
Her relationship to Ezequiel became strained. She saw him again in 1982. He told her something that terrified her.
Soon after that, she tried to take her own life by throwing herself off a building. She couldn't live with the guilt anymore, not just guilt for killing him, but for partial responsibility of unleashing something that shouldn't exist onto the world, something that could end every human life if it felt too bored. She survived her attempt, though she remained with spinal injuries with the rest of her life.
It was then when she decided to use her "second chance at life" to do something about it. She would gather as much information about what he had become as possible, she would try to reduce the damage he'd cause to others, and she would try to find a way to destroy him. It was the only thing that could be done, since he had no way back. She didn't know what she'd do if her goal were to be accomplished, but she wouldn't let Yū rest until then.
Ironically, only then Yū loved her for the first time in his life, in the messed up way that he could love. He liked being chased.

Fuuuuck I just realized how similar Giselle is to Ritsuko from Evangelion.
The incident, described plainly
The year is 1979 in an Earth similar to our own, yet different in so many ways. Different borders, different historical events, different nations, different technology. That year, a physicist attempted an insane feat. Helped by a promising neurosurgeon in training and a young and gifted engineer, he put his theories about the very fabric of consciousness to the test.
The three of them spent years building a machine in the form of a pod that would temporarily allow him to be fully aware of the threads of his consciousness that extended well beyond his own brain, and by extension, he would breach a barrier between him and others.
The pod was tested several times, yet it did not go as originally planned. The body of the physicist was mangled beyond recognition. He was thought of as dead for quite some time. His colleagues escaped accusations of murder.
Afterwards, they found out something else had happened. He was trapped in a world beyond our immediate senses, but held more power than he ever imagined he would. He had become a "Sign", a new type of incorporeal conscious entity capable of disrupting the fabric of consciousness and talking in dreams...
The incident happened 30 years ago. The engineer's name was Giselle. The neurosurgeon's name was Ezequiel. The Sign's real name was Yū.
I chose the blog title just because of the Alanis Morissette song, but it may end up being thematically fitting after all.
