I have seen WAY too many posts about “herbal remedies to provide abortion” going around with the recent news

And as a historian focusing on medical history I’m thrilled to see people looking to the past to see what people with uteruses used to bring on menstruation (induce abortion) because the history of reproductive healthcare and of abortion in particular is extremely important in understanding our current circumstances and the circumstances Americans were in before Roe

But I also really really need y’all to listen to me both as a historian and as someone who’s been making and using herbal remedies my whole life:

A lot of these “remedies” will kill you.

This isn’t an exaggeration, this isn’t a scare tactic designed to make you lose hope on reproductive healthcare. A lot of herbal remedies can and will kill you- especially if you don’t speak to actual herbalists, licensed homeopaths, and actual physicians who know your medical history before using an herbal remedy. Even helpful herbs can be very very dangerous in doses large enough to induce an abortion - I’m taking completely shutting down your liver and killing your kidneys dangerous.

I also want it pointed out that a LOT of online homeopathic groups are full of misinformation- the kind that leads people to accidentally dose themselves with arsenic by consuming fruit pits as well as incredibly ableist anti-modern science and anti-vax arguments. A lot of people in online homeopathic spaces are ableist white supremacists who hide behind a veneer of “new age spirituality” rather than conservative evangelical Christianity.

You have to be extremely careful about where you’re getting your information from and how you’re using that information.

I’m currently working on putting together a master list of licensed homeopaths who have resources available in the wake of the leaked Supreme Court decision and will share that when it’s finished. Just please folks- stay safe.

I want to echo the sentiment of this post, that you should not turn to any random herbal treatment you see posted online, but with one extra thing: homeopathy does not work, and being a licensed homeopath is not a real credential and doesn’t mean anything.

thought dump re: art series for podcast

questions/discussion topics for art series (currently unsorted /not in specific order)

up front disclaimer: i think most of these questions eventually get back to 'art is art and art is subjective' but these are the things my micro focused brain wonders about (: would like to discuss /hear others' thoughts (partially to stop the hyper focus on price tags or other labels)

• ('traditional'/physical) art in an increasingly digital society; art vs increasingly pragmatic [western/modern] society * do more artists gravitate toward using a digital medium because it can be more accessible than traditional/physical mediums? how do we get better about preserving art/nurturing artistic talent and appreciation, in an increasingly capitalistic society (at least in USA) where 'worth' is forcibly aligned with 'MONEY' ?

• how is the value and 'greatness' of art 'determined'? (emphasis on quotes bc the tl;dr is that it is subjective!) * related: is it selfish(?) to keep art from the public (museum vs private collection)? * i understand that there are factors such as reputation(?) of artist, innovation, and even an economic side of things, where, if 1000 people want to pay the artist for 1 original work, the value increases. but on the other hand, art can be and is often divisive, and if i think of a work as 'art' but another person sees the same work as 'trash', are we both right and both wrong? is there no right/wrong, and i am just focusing too much on the 'commercial' aspect of creating art? (':

• while art is subjective in that there's no definitive or 'right or wrong' 'rules' for what is 'good' vs 'bad' art... how much of being able to create art is natural talent vs practice /honing your craft?

• why is it that the question of 'are video games art?' so divisive? to me the answer is an obvious 'yes [they can be]', but what's with the mainstream attitude otherwise?

• inspiration vs imitation vs straight up rip off: does it matter* if all aspects of 'monetization' are removed? * i am specifically thinking of fashion- if person A puts together a striking outfit/ensemble (not literally creating the pieces, but more wears and accessorizes existing items), and person B copies the look piece for piece, but person B is seen by enough other people that person B is attributed with 'creating' the 'look/style' ? * BUT this applies across the board- can someone be considered a musical artist if they only remix others' work, and or play cover music? is someone who is hired on as a colorer (is that a word) at a film studio, considered an artist?
