I JUST SPIT OUT MY DRINK
Art, not even once
This made me laugh more than it should have !
So I've been thinking recently and as this was my blog for arty designy stuff, thought I would post this up, I'm considering maybe getting a half sleeve with this as a base for the design, still got a lot of work to do on it then give it to the artist to play about with but I need to get my back piece completed first !
My feelings right there
Video of my experience in Nijmegen, i know all the footage is rediculousily shakey but its hard to record on your phone whilst walking ......
Gekko Rock climbing NMP Evaluation
With this project i think i have learnt an incredible amount. After starting this venture with absolutely no idea about app development and only having done a few lessons in HTML coding before, i'm quite happy that i have got to the stage i'm at. Granted there are still bugs with the app and faults that need to be addressed (i.e the videos not working) but over all i've created something operational which has the potential to go live.
There are still a few design faults but they are only minor and arn't noticeable whilst flicking through the app, its just the positioning of some of the images which is a little bit out but its so minor that it isnt noticeable.
Throughout this project i have com across many obstacles starting with the first bit of coding i tried which was the viewer scroll on the "what is belaying" page, after numerous attempts at following a tutorial for it, the code just want working until i noticed a slight discrepancy in the code and then boom it was working, then i found i had a slight bit of trouble with the zoom function on my harness parts page which again, a slight change to code fixed the problem right away, these problems were minor fixes but i also found that i was getting common issues like "thread 1 signal SIGBRT" which only occur when a link is lost or duplicated. With that it was just a case of me being impatient and not checking the connections properly but again they were easy fixes. The main issue i had was with the video player. I looked everywhere for a solution but could find no reason as to why the video was playing but no visuals were being shown so i left it for this project. In the future i may try playing around with the video formats to see wether or not it was the format of video or the suggestion was made that it might be that quick time player wasnt installed but as its a simulator i can't test that.
Aside from a few minor set backs, i have loved doing this project, there have been times where its been incredibly frustrating but after overcoming the obstacle causing the frustration, there is a great sense of achievement and the cycle continues, its like playing a game and with each fault that is conquered its like levelling up. I defiantly feel that i have learnt an incredible amount not just about coding but also about how i learn, the constant test and readjusting of my code has helped me to see what works and what doesn't and its also helped me to recognise faults within the code by looking at what errors come up.
If i was to do something like this again, i would probably spend a bit more time on the design and take a little bit more time to consider what is possible to do with gesture recognisers and code. I jumped the gun buy thinking that i would just have images and text then i realised i can do a lot more with Xcode than i though so i would take that into consideration next time and now i know more about building an app so i should be able to work on more complex things.
So with all that in mind, i have loved this project, its been challenging, and on a topic i love so i would defiantly do somthing like this again.... peace out 3rd year, its been fun!
my final boards for tomorrows hand in. I don't have much in the way of deliverables but i have been focusing all my efforts on building this thing. I think everything is there, i have the layout of the app, the individual pages, and the specific images for the slides which can be swiped through. Im not sure how im going to show my app working short of the video i posted earlier demonstrating how it works.
a video to show how my app works, as i said before i couldn't figure out why my video wasn't playing so i have left them out of the video, i cant find anything online which explains why they arn't playing, everything is linked up, the files are in the right place and its obviously playing something but it jus doesnt want to show the visuals. aside from that its all working and i think it is easy to use and navigate.
some options for my icon to represent my app on the iphone and in the app store, i think the one i chose works quite well, it sticks with the branding and is quite recognisable and easy to link to the logo.
these are some of my pages from my app. The design is simple and uniform to make it easy to navigate through, i decided to stick with the red and white theme with the background image to make it look similar to the style from the BMC and other out door companies which use red in their branding, i also think its a striking contrast which looks good and catches the eye and it complements the grey and blueish back ground. If this did go live, i would make some alterations but only to the content rarther than the design, im happy with the design but im not sure the videos really work, a visual element in the videos such as text or maybe a voice over would have probably been good but i didnt quite manage my time right as i was busy getting to grips with coding but i could always do this if i intended to release it on the app store.
NMP Update
Le sigh, had another issue crop up of which i dont actually know how to sort it. The app is all coded fine but when i launch it and try to access the page for "stopper knot" it force quits the app and gives me a "thread 1 signal SIGBRT" which usually implies that there is either a missing or a duplicate link somewhere but i just cant seem to find it. On the plus side ive bought a year membership to the development program so i can test it on my phone.
NMP Update
So we are now reaching the final few weeks of the final project of my last year of university and my app is finally looking half decent. I figured out how to format all my images so they are a uniform size, turns out all i needed to do was resize the images in photoshop then put the new images back into xcode, simples.
So jobs left to do:
Figure out this video problem, the video content is there, its just not playing which is proving to be a pain.
Sort out my final boards.
Go through my sketchbook and make sure its all finished.
all in all the actual visuals are there so its presentable, happy days !
a video of me testing my final app. I'm still having issues displaying the videos but at least they are there and playing but i will figure that out other than that it appears that everything else is working which is a good sign.
one other thing which i will need to tweak is the sizing of some of the images, i'll need to see if i can find how to make all the images a uniform size.
this is my first test incorperating film into my app, i dont know why the video isnt working but i shall have a play around. im happy that i have managed to to get a video into an app though.
Video tutorial i used for the image zoom, again, really useful tutorial to follow.
the video tutorial i used for the image swipe gesture, really good tutorial which really helped me understand what all the code meant.
