Iâm not surprised there was negative feedback from some folk because of the lack of focus and screen time the actual wlw pairing got in the film.
But y'all some westerners. You have to adjust your expectations and perspective when watching queer content from countries less progressive (in this aspect) than western society. First of all, weâre only just getting wlw films with happy endings, that arenât generally depressing or playing up stereotypes. Hell, weâre still lucky if we avoid the predatory lesbian trope and the storyline involving the âstraightâ woman cheating on her husband or boyfriend with the predatory lesbian.
This movie was groundbreaking for queer representation in India and if youâre not a queer Indian person, frankly, it wasnât for you anyway.
And Sweety and Kuhuâs relationship was really everywhere. Sweety met her and we saw them get close. We saw Babloo chasing her as she attempted to go on what we find out are regular trips to see Kuhu.
Sahil was the âcomplicationâ. Heâs an intentionally ironic character. Very cheeky. She says his first play was superficial because the romance doesnât have a complication. He becomes a complication for her romance and ultimately a solution for it with his new play.
Sweety said the play was for any girl who felt like her and they showed that little girl and in real life that little girl is who this movie was for and thatâs what matters.
It was beautiful in its existence alone. It was very clever storytelling. It felt good. It made me angry. It frustrated me. It broke my heart. It pieced it back together. It gave me every single emotion the protagonist was feeling when she was feeling it.
Thereâs a suicide mention, as well but itâs not⌠explicit. I donât think itâs triggering.

netflix just released the film âek ladki ko dekha toh aisa lagaâ which is an indian movie about a girl whoâs into girls and how she gets the courage to come out and face her family and be with the woman she loves. sound familiar? yeah, i know itâs the basic plot of most hollywood lgbtq movies but thatâs not the point.Â
this is literally the first indian movie iâve seen on a famous platform, accessible by anyone, that actually represents the lgbtq community in all its beauty and love and affection, rather that scorning or mocking it.Â
the movie is beautiful and the scenes and the fluff and the cute couple and the emotions just make it so worth watching, and thatâs not all.
iâm an indian bisexual teenager and i wouldâve been so happy to have been exposed to a movie like this when i was younger. if i had seen this kind of portrayal in the film industry, i doubt that i wouldâve been the afraid young girl i was and i wouldâve had the courage to do what the main characters did and just BE MYSELF.Â
all i hope is that someone sees this movie, some little girl out there sees it and knows that she is not alone, that she is not abnormal. with a topic such as this, which has been treated as taboo for decades now in my country (still is kinda), when it is actually being represented and being represented well, i canât help but wanna scream about it from the rooftops.Â

There are so, so many things that ELKDAL got right but I think my favorite thing was the happy ending.Â
Thereâs a wonderful post on how they got their happy ending in India, which is awesome, but I also like that the ending shows that their happy endings are not tied up in a neat bow at the end. Usually, in a movie like this Iâd expect - everyone loved their play, it was a huge hit, and every family member apologizes and accepts her wholeheartedly.Â
But - the play isnât a huge hit. So many people leave, think itâs disgusting, and refuse to give it a shot. By the end thereâs really only half the original audience there. Itâs not an acclaimed hit, itâs not something that was seen and adored by many, but it doesnât matter because thereâs still the little girl with the tears in her eyes and the older uncles and aunties who stayed for the whole thing and maybe it sparked something in them and thatâs whatâs happy about it.Â
Even with Sahil, his subplot with his family isnât wrapped up. His father makes a joke and they end off fairly happy, but he still very obviously hates talking to his father. Thereâs no apology, no âI was wrong, you can write,â just a laughed comment and a statement that he can write in his next movie which is realistically the closest thing to an apology heâd get in real life. But thereâs no big conclusion itâs justâŚthere (and side note I love the realistic types of families - we see the sweet supportive brother with Raza vs the over-traditional Babloo, the father who genuinely loves his child unconditionally vs the father who doesnât know how to express positive comments to his child, the daughter whoâs experienced a culture that doesnât think sheâs an abnormality vs the one whoâs had to live with it her whole life, even the mother who wonât let her son live his dream vs Chatro letting her children do what they want). Sahil doesnât find some love of his life on the train when he leaves Sweety, we donât see him become a big star, but life is still happy and good and heâs hopeful.Â
With Sweetyâs family, we see three levels of acceptance at the end. Balbir had a hard time accepting it in the beginning, yes, but he genuinely loves his daughter and wants whatâs best for her. By the ending of the movie he has seen that he was one of the factors that caused her to feel like she couldnât be herself and he shows her that she can be herself around him, no matter what, and he not only embraces her, but her life. And he loves Kuhu now too, because any social worries that he may have about their family reputation means nothing compared to his daughter, and if his daughter loves this woman and she treats her right heâs going to love Kuhu as well because sheâs his family and daughter now as well.Â
Her grandmother is able to accept Sweety, but she herself canât bring herself to accept Sweetyâs life - not yet, anyway. She herself tells Kuhu âI havenât changed that much,â but she still loves her granddaughter and isnât going to reject her based on something she doesnât fully accept or understand yet.Â
And Balboo. By âthree levels of acceptanceâ I mean Balboo doesnât accept it at all by the end, which isâŚrealistic. Heâs shown a clear history of being violently homophobic and he was abusive towards Sweety under the guise and belief that he was being âprotectiveâ. He doesnât understand that while everyone else reevaluated their flawed thinking and grew - or are trying to grow - that he needs to evaluate his behavior as well. He still thinks sheâs an illness, that she needs to be reformed, but instead of his belief being supported heâs treated with an eye roll. Because thatâs all his statements deserve.Â
And itâs so important - itâs a realistic ending, itâs one that gay kids could look at and go, âYeah, that, that could actually be my life,â and realize, not a fantasy ending where everything is tightly and precisely wrapped up but where there may not be people who love you and accept you after but the ones that matter do and the ones that donât donât matter because They. Donât. Get. To. Take. Away. Your. Happy. Ending.Â

whenever either of the girls move you can always hear the jingle of churiyan or phirande n I love it đđđ
when Kuhu surprises Sweety in the dressing room n hugs Sweety n she closes her eyes⌠đđromanceâŚ.
(Like seriously is that the tightest hug Sweety has ever given or gotten I think yes probably)

Chhatro ji and Billo Aunty are the real heros in this story ngl, Chhatro knows thereâs smth going on as soon as Sahil says Kuhu is playing the other lover n everyone else is outraged but she has this look on her face n then she looks at KuhuâŚ..n she knows
and then she convinces Balbir with one line to try it, and again n again every time he has doubts itâs Chhatro who pushes him to keep going
n also Billo Aunty for letting Sweety borrow her phone n also taking her to the gurdwara AND ALSO when she sees Balbir n Virji leaving the house pissed off she goes straight after them to make sure nothing bad happens

Like seriously my cousins have always said my dad looks like Anil Kapoor and it always annoyed him but in this movie he even acts like my dad n I wish my dad would watch this and see me
And the Biji reminds me so much of my Nani n her sisters, especially when Sahil comes to touch her feet while sheâs knitting in the Good Morning song đ
So much of this movie is about being seen as a requisite to being loved likeâŚ..all the eyes Sweety draws in her diaries, how the only pictures of her looking at the camera are when sheâs with Kuhu, how Virjiâs eyes are always on her but he obviously doesnât really see her, like when it takes him minutes to notice Sweety standing in the door watching him bully that little boy, and when Kuhu comes back she sees her first thru the mirror and when sheâs talking about being normal sheâs reflected twice in the mirrors, one with Kuhu n one without, n in the poster for the show sheâs looking into a mirror but weâre seeing her, n how her daddy finally sees her, and thats how he understandsâŚpĂľethĂque cĂŻnÄmâ
Basically Iâll love this movie until I die because no piece of media has ever spoken to my soul the way this movie did thanks for coming to my TedTalk
