backhanded misogyny is and always will be the largest and last hurdle to defeat in the supposed woman-cheering acotar fandom because the amount of people who are obsessed with wanting elain to be alone in a romantasy book series as some sort of ultimate girlpower move is so disappointing.

okay i've decided to add on to this

1. none of the people who want elain to end up alone are making these claims in good faith, no matter how much they try to twist it. just say you want elain to be alone because it's more convenient for your ships (and i mean that in the most non-sarcastic way possible, like at least be straight up about it)

2. one of the most popular arguments for elain ending up alone is "she needs time to discover her own powers and heal from her trauma, the last thing she needs is to be thrown in a relationship, let elain be independent and a girlboss in her own right!!!" sorry, do you also think that feyre and nesta should have ended up alone, as well? did feyre not also need time to heal from her trauma from tamlin and amarantha, and start learning about her powers, before she fell in love with rhys? did nesta not also need years to heal from her own self-hatred and come to terms with the hurt she inflicted on others before she could allow herself to fall in love with cassian and let him love her back?

3. acotar is a romantasy. it's the main genre of the series. let's be real with ourselves, the majority of people are not reading acotar for the so-called world-ending wars that never really have any stakes because sarah j. maas loves a happy ending too much. we're reading it because we're attached to the characters and their relationships. these books are, at the heart of it, about relationships between people, whether it's romantic or found family or healing family relationships. to deny that one of the focal characters of the series has a right to a love story and trying to frame it as some weird girlpower bait and switch is so odd, as if one has anything to do with another. since when do women need to turn their back on love in order to be powerful?

4. everyone has a right to dislike any character or ship they want. i don't care if you hate elain or love her, i don't care if you're an elriel or a gwynriel or an elucien. at the end of the day, these are all fictional characters. HOWEVER, the discussions about these characters are real, and the behaviors and rhetorics being brought to these discussions are very telling of certain beliefs and attitudes. interesting.

5. it seems to me that ever since the whole pliable bones "theory" was called out for being misogynistic (which it was), the new thing is for elain antis to say she just needs "time on her own" and that she shouldn't be in a relationship as a way to basically push elain out of any potential ship because she's just overhated in the fandom and people want her out of the way. now, i don't believe most people, even the antis, truly believe elain will end up alone, but the statement of thinking it should happen, with reasoning that simply doesn't hold up (see point 3), is just so...like just say you don't want her messing up your ship lol. it's clear that a lot of people already hate elain, you don't need to jump through a bunch of hoops to act like you don't while simultaneously loving feysand and nessian for the exact reasons you say elain should end up alone. it's the hypocrisy above all that's soooo wild to me.

as someone who is pretty critical of sarah j maas's writing style and the way she structures her books, plots, and characters, i really do think with the way people are making up theories or insisting on perspectives that have been disproven time and time again, a lot of you guys think she's a completely different author.

and this isn't about ships or what pov the next book is in or anything like that, it's about people blatantly ignoring the way sjm has written acotar and the way she's talked about certain characters and couples and then acting shocked when she says for the umpteenth time that these people are fated mates or that person is abusive.

and we can—and should!!!—criticize the often narrow-minded way she goes about her plots and characters but i'm surprised more and more by how many people instead insist that she's building up to some insane plot twists that would basically unravel every other plot and character she's written. as if she hasn't been so incredibly clear from day 1 about what endgame she intends on building for this world

Trauma is only a bad thing when it comes to Gwyn, not Elain, according to antis I guess 🤔

Trauma just doesn’t exist for Elain or it isn’t “bad enough” in their eyes. The only times I’ve seen antis acknowledge Elains trauma is in anti-elriel dissertations and I think that says enough.

imagine being so loud and wrong about not seeing a very obvious storyline that’s been slowly building since 2016 - the potential for different mating bonds

Rhys’s parent’s mating bond, and the story of how it snapped, eerily mirrors eluciens……the foundation of how certain bonds snap into place clearly expose that there’s a difference in them. and if you paid any attention to books 2-5 you would’ve been able to recognize the differences when they presented themselves.

nessian’s revealed itself to each of them over time. Rhys knew after months of knowing feyre, and didn’t want to burden her with it because of where she was in her life. it snapped for her when she accepted her love for him. the bond was not forced on Feyre and Nesta. they accepted their bonds because they already loved Rhys and Cassian when they discovered its existence.

anti elain people are so silly to me because i have yet to see a credible reason for it.

“she hasn’t done anything” she hasn’t had her own book yet so what story do you want her to have? the only thing nesta did before her own book was behead the king of hybern, which, who else was involved in that? oh, right, elain.

“she’s secretly evil” how can you find any basis for her being secretly evil if you all say she hasn’t done anything? how can you find any proof that elain is secretly evil in the same breath that you say she’s useless and hasn’t done anything?

“she didn’t help when feyre was hunting and she only planted flowers.” sooo true. and have you forgiven nesta for being downright nasty and vile to everyone? and once again, i don’t remember nesta saying sorry to anyone, least of all feyre, until it was HER POV. we have absolutely no idea how guilty elain feels or what apologies she needs or wants to make because we have never been inside her head.

Sarah shared something deeply personal about her own birth giving experiences. And I sat there watching it thinking. I really hope she has never seen those Elain’s womb/pelvis posts. I genuinely hope she never stumbled across any of that. Because if she did? She would be disgusted. And rightfully so. Gw/nriels really dedicated actual time and energy to arguing that Elain physically cannot have Azriel’s children because of her bone structure. Her PELVIS. They were confident about it. And I still receive comments like these on my tiktok videos. The amount of comments I delete.. disgusting. And I know Sarah would go.. what is wrong with you?! Like genuinely. What are you talking about. What does that even mean. And now knowing what Sarah went through personally with childbirth... A real woman sharing something vulnerable and painful about her own body, and this fandom was out here using female anatomy as a gotcha in a ship war..
