❝ you know when i said i wanted more adventure in my life, this isn’t what i meant. ❞ elara scowled at valerie, shivering in her wet clothes. she didn’t entirely remember how they had gotten here, but it definitely involved a bottle of tequila and a compilation video of idiots in the snow on youtube. at least the cold water had mostly sobered her up. who knew that trying to skate on a frozen pond wasn’t a good idea, especially when it wasn’t quite as frozen as it looked. it was really something elara should have known, and she probably did, when she was sober enough to know things. ❝ i think i forgot what it’s like to be warm. ❞

Valerie nodded, there seemed to a story to why elara wouldn’t go back to london and even though she wasn’t one to usually shut up she wasn’t one to pry either, if she wanted to tell her she would. “It is, it’s amazing honestly and I love the place but Ilike to keep myself out of visiting distance of  my parents or most of my extended family to be honest.” Valerie shrugged, things with her parents weren’t bad, they had never been, but they never were good either and that was a weird, uncomfortable line that as soon as she could decide on it she refused to walk. 

maybe elara and valerie had more in common in than she had originally thought. elara had come here to escape from her family, too. ❝ yeah, i get that. family can be... a lot. ❞ that was an understatement when it came to elara’s family, but it wasn’t something she wanted to get into. ❝ so if you’re not going to montreal for the holidays, what are your plans? are you big on celebrating? ❞

“Enjoy the adventure, Elara.” Valerie answered before rolling her eyes. “Plus there are multiple other places we can go that are warm and cozy.” 

“This town does get kind of monotone sometimes doesn’t it?” She sighed, she loved elligham, completely and deeply and she didn’t miss her old life at all but she did wish more things happened here, especially work wise. “At least when it comes to jobs I have noticed, at least you are free from sucky people.” 

Valerie started walking behind elara calmly “Montreal, which was way more interesting but also way more stressing in many many ways, I definitely wouldn’t go back, I don’t even do it for holidays and it’s not that far away. “ Valerie turned to Elara. “Would you go back to london?

elara made a face. ❝ you couldn’t pay me to go back to london. new york, maybe, but not london. never london. montreal is beautiful, though. and a great party scene. you really wouldn’t go back? ❞ sometimes elara felt like she had left too many cities in her wake, too many bad memories, and ellingham was the one place she hadn’t ruined for herself. at least, not yet. ❝ aside from the lack of excitement, ellingham is pretty great. how long have you lived here? ❞

     ❝ unpopular opinion: i ate pizza in italy and i fucking HATED it. maybe i’m uncultured but i just feel like the sauce, cheese and crust is made so much better in ellingham ! ❞ that’s something that you don’t hear every day. ❝ out of all the places you’ve gone to, what’s stuck with you the most ? like, where’s somewhere you’d love to go again ?        i feel like i’m twenty-questioning you right now but i swear i’m just really interested ! ❞

elara liked that dakota seemed genuinely interested in her opinions, but this time he was asking a tougher question than just her favourite pizza. she had travelled a lot from a young age, going wherever her parents’ work took them, but she always longed for some stability, just one place to call home that really felt like home. her parent’s house in london may as well have been just another one of the hotels they stayed in around the world, all of them started blurring together after a while. nut there was one summer that stood out to her, one place which didn’t just feel like a pitstop, it felt like a destination.

❝ santorini. ❞ she said. ❝ we were there for 2 weeks when i was 15. my parents were busy working, my brother was at some summer program for obnoxious people and i was bored. i made friends with the neighbours and they showed me all the best places. we went out on their boat a few times, the principessa, and being out there on the open water, i felt so free, you know? and there’s no legal drinking age in greece so... ❞ she laughed, feeling like she had said too much. ❝ what about you? besides new york and ellingham, where would you want to live? ❞

    a smile dangles from the corner of his lips as he listens to the words pour out of elara’s mouth          she definitely makes him feel something ! ❝ aw, you’re making me want to fly back tonight so fucking bad ! i swear, if i didnt have to hand in these documents tomorrow morning i’d be on the next flight out of here ! ❞

❝ pizza sounds great, i love pizza ! ooh, garlic bread is good too, but i probably shouldn’t eat that on a date, right ? unless… you want to eat and smell like garlic bread too. ❞ he’s too busy thinking about pizza to even realise that he’s just dropped the ‘d’ word. ❝ what kind of pizza do you like ? this is a very important question, please answer carefully. ❞

❝ that’s probably for the best. i wouldn’t get any work done if you were here. ❞ she teased.

elara doesn’t miss him casually dropping the word ‘date’ and it catches her by surprise. she decides not to call him on it, but it does make her smile. ❝ i LOVE garlic bread. we should make a pact, if one of us eats it then we both have to. ❞ she took a second to consider his ‘very important question’. ❝ it’s so tough to just pick one. i’ll really have any kind of pizza. i think i’ve had pizza in every place i’ve ever visited, and it was almost never bad. but, i’d say my go-to is... pepperoni. it’s a classic. ❞ she shrugged.

     grabbing the laptop in one hand and his over-priced salad in the other, he leaves the small office area of the suite and sits himself down in the lounge room, gently setting the computer down on the coffee table ❝ yeah, my bed is pretty fucking comfortable. i suppose that’s why zuko likes to sleep on it. damn, i definitely miss my bed. ❞

❝ what are your thoughts on maybe, i don’t know, going out for dinner or chilling and watching a movie at my place when i get back and then if we’re feeling it, we can fuck ? is that too sappy for you ? ❞ he doesn’t want to say the word ‘ date. ’ ❝ if you don’t want to that’s fine. i just… i think it would be nice to spend time with you, that’s all. ❞

❝ hmmm, ❞ she agreed. ❝ the only thing that would make sleeping in your bed better would be if you were here. ❞ she picked the laptop up and put it on her lap, now that zuko had settled down next to her instead of half on top of her. 

he didn’t use the word date, but it definitely sounded like one. it was more than she’d let herself hope for. she gave him a small smile. ❝ yeah, i could go for dinner, or whatever. doesn’t have to be anything fancy. we could go to that pizza place and then come back here and... watch a movie or something, you know, depending on how the night goes. i’m up for anything. ❞ she shrugged.

    ❝ a bag of coffee ? too easy, i’ll bring you back two. ❞ a smile forms across dakota’s brims as his eyes remained glued on the computer screen, fingertips aimlessly running around the edges of the contract in his reach. ❝ don’t worry, i’ll be back tomorrow night; you’ll get your coffee fix soon ! how’s my boy doing ? is he being good ? did my housekeeper change the bed sheets for you ? i asked her to do it before i left, didn’t want you to have to sleep in my grossness. ❞

his eyes drift away from the screen and towards the document next to him, exhaling heavily as he brought his pen to the last page of the agreement, signing away his availability for the first half of twenty-twenty. ❝ you should’ve come to new york with me, the view from this room is AMAZING. we also could’ve, y’know, fucked everywhere… if you wanted to. ❞

❝ he’s been the best. we went for a walk and he was great. we’ve been cuddled up on the couch all day. ❞ she replied, giving the dog a fond look and petting him. ❝ and yeah, the sheets were changed when i got here. i swear, you have the most comfortable bed ever. i think i’m getting more out of this petsitting arrangement than you are. ❞

she looked back at the screen at his words, a smile forming on her lips. ❝ i wouldn’t have been any fun if i had come. i have a deadline, so no time for... distractions. ❞ she tried to keep her tone light, casual, and not show how much his words affected her. it wasn’t that she didn’t want to sleep with dakota, but she was afraid if she did, it would be just sex. she didn’t want him to be just another hook-up in a long list of them. 

despite all that, she heard herself say, ❝ maybe when i finish this article, and you’re back in town... ❞ she trailed off. she was only human after all.

     with the amount of time dakota spends in new york you’d think that he’d at least own an apartment or maybe even a townhouse but no, he’s tucked away in his favourite suite at the baccarat hotel, stuffing his face with over-priced food and going through a contract for a new gig. ❝ i can’t believe i came all the way out here just to sign a piece of paper. surely they could’ve just sent this to me this over email, right ? ❞ it may look like he’s speaking to himself, but he’s got his laptop out in front of him with a skype call currently running. ❝ elara, is there anything you want me to bring back ? if there’s something you want, i’m more than happy to pop down to fifth avenue before comin’ back home. ❞

elara was sitting cross-legged on dakota’s couch with her laptop propped up on the coffee table. she had started out with it on her lap and then had to move it to make room for the huge dog currently occupying much of the couch. she wasn’t really complaining though, since she had spent the better part of 10 minutes petting him and ignoring the notes she had been working on organizing. 

she paused her petting to think about dakota’s question, tapping a pen on her nose. ❝ hmmm... oh! this place on 5th has the best coffee i’ve ever had in my life. if you would pick me up a bag, or two, of their beans, that would be amazing. ❞ she had almost said she didn’t need anything, just for him to come back, but that was way too cheesy and way too much. after all, her and dakota weren’t anything. well, they were friends, but nothing beyond that. ❝ when are you coming back? and i’m only asking because of the coffee. ❞

❝ what? no. ❞ elara turned to see the police captain standing only a few feet away from her. she quickly straightened up and gave a quick glance to the contraption near her feet before giving him an sheepish smile. ❝ i’m just testing to see if the traps from home alone would work in real life... it’s for an article i’m writing. in my defence, it wasn’t my idea... and it’s not technically illegal, right? i mean no one got hurt. except maybe me? ❞ she held up her hand to show him her bandaged finger.

    ❝ YEP, YEP, YEP… YOU’LL definitely need to keep that jumper on. under no circumstances should ANYTHING be taken off. i actually need to get some sleep tonight, i can’t be up thinkin’ about boobs and whatnot ! ❞ hazel hues drift towards elara’s jumper, a hand extending to gently tug at the item of clothing. does he actually want her to keep it on ? honestly, who the hell knows. ❝ it would definitely look better off, but it should be kept on… right ? ❞ 

her eyes followed his hand as he reached for the hem of her jumper, presumably to pull it back down, but she noticed his hesitation. ❝ yeah, you’re probably right. ❞ she said in what she hoped sounded like a disappointed tone. maybe she was a little disappointed, but she was mostly just playing it up for dakota. she grabbed his hand from where it was still holding her jumper and turned her back to him, pulling his arm snugly around her. ❝ guess we should sleep then, if that’s what you want. good night, dakota. ❞ she closed her eyes but she couldn’t keep the smile from her lips.

❝ i wouldn’t give you the same gift twice! but you have to admit it was creative. i had to special order that eclair from the bakery. and it was good! ❞ elara had been really proud of that present, actually, and she’d put a lot of thought into it. ❝ if you didn’t like that gift... you’re probably going to hate what i picked out for you this year. ❞ she gave her friend a teasing smile. she was just joking about her hating the gift, she was pretty sure samantha would love it.

      ❝ you’re a tease. ❞ before speaking another word, dakota lifts up the covers to ensure that he doesn’t in fact have a hard-on      it’s better to be safe than sorry, right ?  ❝ we’re all good, i haven’t popped a boner yet ! it’s okay for me to be the big spoon ! ❞ giving a quick nod of his head, he pats the area of the bed beside him, motioning for elara to scooch closer. ❝ c’mon, get in here and be my little spoon. ❞

she laughed and followed his direction, scooting closer but not turning her back to him, yet. ❝ i’m kind of offended, is this not doing it for you? ❞ she gestured at her oversized jumper and christmasy pajama bottoms, which were mostly hidden under the comforter. she pressed her lips together to keep her smile at bay. ❝ you know, if we’re going to be spooning, i’m going to be pretty warm. do you think i’ll even need this? ❞ she asked, hands finding the hem of her jumper. she didn’t really plan on taking the jumper off––it was very cozy––but it was fun messing with dakota.

     ❝ YOU’VE NEVER JUST SLEPT with someone ? like ever ? that’s so weird ! are you just, like, super picky or something or have you just never been in a position where you’d just lay down next to someone ? i’m honoured that you’ve picked me to take your… just sleeping virginity ? ❞ grabbing ahold of the duvet, dakota pulls it up to cover his body, a soft, content sigh falling past his brims       it feels good to be home.

    ❝ i’ll be honest with ya’, i’m not a HUGE cuddler, but i’d be more than happy to be one just for you. do you like being the little or big spoon ? ❞ now he’s asking the real questions !  ❝ if i’m the big spoon, there’s a big chance that you’ll wake up with some morning wood pressin’ against your back, so pick your spooning role carefully. ❞

❝ i guess i’ve just never had a lot of close friends? so the opportunity never presented itself, you know? you should feel honoured, this is a big moment for me. ❞ she laughed and pulled the comforter up to cover most of her face. 

❝ hmmm... ❞ she said, her voice muffled by the comforter before she moved it away from her face. ❝ i was going to say i prefer to be the big spoon... but since you’re making this big sacrifice for me maybe i should go with little spoon? ❞ she smirked at him. ❝ or we could just go to sleep and see what happens? ❞
