Post Grad

Having graduated university I spent a few months looking for jobs or internships and attending interviews. With few opportunities available for someone with my experience I returned to my second great love, sailing!

However my summers are very different to my winters, and I have ended up staying in this beautiful country to varnish boats, still interiors, sort of.

It has been fantastic so far and I am continuing to learn a lot. I know this is probably the only opportunity I have to explore with this level of freedom, and it is making me excited to come home and go back to my first great love, design.

Graduation

Today the Interior Architecture and design at the Arts University Bournemouth graduated! 

It was an amazing day, I couldn’t be any more proud of us all, and to add to the already very memorable day, Norman Foster was our guest speaker.

I am so pleased that this very long road of education has finally ended, though it has been fantastic and I wouldn’t change it for the world, 17 years of continuous education is surely enough. I am deeply excited to use my education in the fast approaching and terrifying future and can’t wait to find a job that inspires me, letting me use what I have learnt whilst continuing to learn more in practice.

Edge Grad Show Bournemouth

After months of designing and testing and building the Grad Show is finally here. The stands and branding of the show are incredible and the team were truly fantastic in putting it all together.

And now there is still time for some final tweaks before the Educators Show at the Old Truman Brewery in London.

Grad Show Build Team

With our final project of university finished and handed in we are now looking forward to our grad shows in both Bournemouth and London. 

After lots of design and planning meetings we have begun physically testing the design, and it has been so exciting to see the designs come to life.

Linked In

My linked in is now up and running, and linked to my website. It has been really interesting looking back through my experiences and education, and looking at them now as assets that will help me to find a job.

I have also enjoyed looking at the sorts of jobs available to graduates within my field, and the skills they are looking for.

I will keep updating my various media profiles, as well as making some enquiries, and will hopefully find an internship, or better yet, a job!

Final Presentation

Today I did the last presentation I will ever do at University.

Though there is always room for improvement, I think it was one of the best presentations I have ever done. I was pleased with my slides, the graphics, and my delivery.

It was unfortunate though that my phone was in ‘do not disturb’ mode rather than off, so had a few buzzing interruptions.

However I carried on and received some excellent feedback. I am really excited to start making the recommended changes, and producing more work that I am proud of.

Experiments

Today I took the time to really think about the arrangement of my design, and experiment with how the elements stack up.

Once I have established the sizes of the boxes and how they are assembled, I can finalise the number of boxes and individually design their educational content.

Website Update

My new and improved website is now live, with my latest work up for all to see, it also has links to my new Linked In, Instagram, Pinterest pages, as well as to this Blog.

With my Professional Studies submission fast approaching, I am pleased with my more professional and up to date website, and hope that combined with my Linked In and other social media pages, it will help me to secure a post graduate position.

Revit Rendering

Having completed the Revit render of my piece, I decided to share this gif to show it on all sides. 

It was a fiddly and complex process, but I have always enjoyed using Revit and the final finish of the renders. I am now able to take this model, import it to 3dsMax and create further renders and diagrams for my final submission.

With three weeks left on this project, I have a phenomenal amount of work to do, but with my time plan in place it’s definitely achievable, and I am excited to see my completed piece, and move towards the Free Range Show (London), and my Graduation.

Model Making

Testing design principles through practical realisation.  I have recently rediscovered my model making abilities and now use it regularly to test my concepts and ideas. I was stuck on a particular design for a long time, and it wasn’t until I tested it that I was able to come up with new ideas, as well as discover and over come limitations that I wouldn’t have discovered without the physical testing. This helps my design to subtly evolve and improve, therefore becoming more resolved and rigorously complex.

Research Development

Looking into precedents that use similar design principles to allow rearrangement via its modular, flexible nature.

I looked into their design, structure and use, strengths and limitations and how their design could influence and improve mine. I then tested some of the principles through model making.

Render Experiments

I created this render of my design in the National Synchroton Light Source entrance to help me start thinking about the sorts of spaces my design would be displayed in, and how it would be used. 

This enables me to consider the design in terms of practical use as well as aesthetically to make my designs better suited. Though I had thought about the location I hadn’t really visualised how its’ size would affect the space.

Architectural Collage

Following an inspiring and productive tutorial, I put together these architectural collages using buildings, images and equipment linked to the Structural Genomics Consortium. 

It was a fun exercise that got me thinking about this project more freely and creatively, however I plan to produce another that is more aimed at illustrating the feelings the cabinet will evoke. Hopefully this will help me to pin point why I am making these design choices, and how they will improve the design and its function.

I have set myself a lot of work this week, and i’m feeling extremely optimistic and excited to make a start.

Insight Exhibition

Part of this project is collaborating with the Structural Genomics Consortium and exhibiting our work at the Radcliffe Science Library in Oxford. Recently we have been working on curating this exhibition, with everything from designing and promoting to building the event.

I have also been thinking more about what I plan to exhibit and how I plan to present it.

Design Development

recent design development has lead to me making my design more flexible. I have decided to make the design easier to transport by making it modular. The design would also allow it to be more accommodating for various audiences and locations. The design would come in various configurations aimed at different audiences.

Tower

The original tower design would allow many people to access it simultaneously as well as tailoring the information based on age group and height. This configuration can be left as a stand alone exhibit or manned by a member of staff.

Booth

This arrangement is more suited for science fairs as it creates a semi-enclosed booth like space. It provides interest for children at lower levels and creates a writing surface and assembly point for discussions.

Stacks

Most appropriate for younger ages and school visits, the stacks can be separated into little piles that allow multiple children to access at once, as well as allowing it to be arranged by topic. The children could be allowed to learn and explore on their own or directed through a class activity.

The modular design needs a lot more work, as well as some technical elements such as their materials, construction and how the boxes are fastened together. The educational content also has a long way to go, however the methods of communication are being developed as well as the educational packages.

Reviewing Design Development

I took the opportunity to go through some of my past designs to evaluate their success, and to review my path of development. It’s interesting to see how my designs evolved, not only their aesthetics, but also their use and method of communication.

I have been a little bit stuck in my designs, clinging to my most successful render because it was successful, in looking through some of my initial sketches i have reminded myself how they grew in the first place which will hopefully help me to continue developing this design.
