Meanwhile we did welcome Raja to the project. Raja (meaning king) is a very gentle 50 year old male elephant who used to work in the wood logging industry. He is very lucky to have come to us and enjoys his new life very much. He is very popular with the visitors although some need to get a little used to this very gentle giant.
What happened to the Elephant Freedom Project?
Despite being granted all the proper licenses and paperwork from the Department of Wildlife and Conservation Washtu and Sujee had to leave the project pending a country wide government led investigation into young elephants. Although it is great the government conducts this investigation and thereby hopefully reduces the poaching of baby elephants from the wild it is a shame they took Wasthu to Pinnawala elephant orphanage and forced Sujee to be kept at her owner's place for now. We have heard that Wasthu is not being treated well and Sujee misses not only her friend but also the freedom the project offers. We don't know what the future holds for them and can only hope they will eventually find their way back to a happy life as we provided them.

This is Sujee close up 1 1/2 years ago. Such a beautiful elephant. Many times when I see the riding elephants nearby their eyes are so dull, there is no more life in it. In comparison, Sujees eyes are full of life and joy :)

hey. where are some good places to see/touch elephants in sri lanka? is there any place i can see them or work with them, where they are not being abused? or is the only way to see them in national parks? tnx :)
The only place so far is ours, I wished there were more. After a long time back on Tumblr so today some more pictures of our elephants. The blue protectors on our boy Wasthu is to protect Sujee, our female elephant, from being hurt by his tusks. Enjoy!
