The average response to trans bathroom bans:

Trans men in womens bathroom do not put women in danger, it puts trans men in danger. Trans men are more likely to be assaulted, beaten, recorded and arrested for following the transphobic law and using the womens bathroom.

The though that they are the icky scary people who shouldn't be in that room because they are masculine comes from..... transmisogyny.

The argument boils down to you shouldn't support ban on trans bathroom rights because the men in dresses will be in the womens bathroom after that.

A popular incident occurred where a trans man who has masculine features with feminine fashion was recorded and harassed. This was an actual men in a dress. Allies rejoiced after their prediction came true.

Conservatives were also happy because they can ignore the reality of what happened in the video. They saw harassment of a trans person and assumed it was a trans woman and it validated their concern.

And for the cherry on top, the person in the video reiterates that he is born female against the person who is horrified of a men in dress using the bathroom in a normal manner.

The whole argument, incident and its response from both sides just support transmisogyny. And the thing is, none of it features any trans women being present. It is a self perpetuated machine of social condemnation of trans women.

For those that didn't click the link (do try to get in the habit please): The trans man in question was first in a men's prison unit, where he was getting abused. He was then transferred to a women's unit, "for safety", where the abuse continued (in his own judgement) worse than before.

This is not about how trans men should be incarcerated in men's prisons because "women's prisons are too dangerous for them", or about trans men "having it worse than trans women", or about any kind of easy fix. It's about the common assumption that trans men and transmascs can safely be in women's prisons; which is an assumption that shapes legislature, judicial decisions, and causes a lack of safety precautions and consequences.

In a lesser sense, this is also about how this assumption is often considered to be a "privilege" over trans women, who are commonly considered much less safe in their "agab-aligned" prison than trans men are, due to the existence of V-coding. This supposedly leaves trans men with the assumed "privilege" of having safety in at least one type of prison, and trans women with none, since they're v-coded in men's prisons and a (perceived) "male threat" in women's prisons.

But there is no inherent "safety from abuse" in a women's ward (or women's spaces in general; this goes hand in hand with not believing victims where the abuser is a woman) for genderqueer people perceived as female (or anybody else, for that matter). The victim in this article describes experiences of sexual assault in the women's ward very similar to v-coding, as well as simultaneous punishments for being perceived as a "male threat" and an inherent danger to the other inmates!

This shows that trans men and transmascs (and I would wager any other type of person who is not cisperisex, regardless of identity or c/agab / c/asab) are at a heightened risk of gender-targeted abuse in both men's and women's prisons, just like trans women are too! Sometimes it's (trans)misogyny, sometimes it's (perceived or not) proximity to maleness, sometimes it's exorsexism, sometimes it's all of it. But cis-gender non-conformity puts all of us on a silver platter for targeted abuse, and all of it needs addressing — This is the key takeaway here. We are all at similar risks.

And whilst we're at it, let's not forget about the targeted abuse of trans men and transmasculine people in ICE facilities (also a "women's" center, in these cases), specifically for their being-a-man. It's all the same problem.

People who “don’t believe in transandrophobia” or “don’t believe that transmascs experience misogyny” are participating in mass trauma denialism towards a marginalized group and I think we should call it what it is more.

They’re calling traumatized people whiny bitches and cunts and telling them they should shut up… literally just for openly acknowledging and talking about the (very often) traumatic ways they’ve been treated for being transmasc specifically and/or being a transmasc person perceived as a girl/woman on some level.

Dr. Alan Hart, a trans man from the USA who pioneered the use of X-ray photography in tuberculosis detection (saving countless lives according to researchers), was "reclaimed" by the lesbian community after his death in 1962, which means he was deadnamed and described as "a women loving woman who had to transition because at the time transsexualism was a quick medicine against sexism and homophobia" by numerous gay and lesbian associations and activists (including Jonathan Ned Katz whom I just quoted and who received many awards for his contributions to... I don't know, transphobia against trans men I guess), even though his widow always expressed how offensive it was to both her and her husband to refer to them as lesbians.

Hart was on testosterone, legally changed his name, and had gotten a hysterectomy (that was described as "unfortunate" by the Right to Privacy gay and lesbian political action committee), making him the first documented trans man to transition in the USA, yet he was characterized as a lesbian woman because cis gays and lesbians had the nerve (when do they NOT have the nerve, dare I say) to think they had the right to "honor [his] life as a woman" by having fundraiser dinners with his deadname attached to them, having college lectures where they talked about him as a lesbian hero, and using she pronouns for him until 2000. The USAmerican trans community, including trans activist Lou Sullivan, had to fight to defend Hart's identity and to have his manhood recognized by the wider community by protesting these lectures and dinners and having a conversation with the Portland chapter of the Lesbian Avengers association, which ended up having a favorable response and joining the trans community in the battle.

I want to end this by reporting the words of Candice Hellen Brown, a trans woman from Portland who wrote a letter to Just Out magazine in 1994 defending Hart's transness:

The Right to Privacy Political Action Committee in Oregon has a big fundraiser every year that is called the [deadname] Hart Dinner. When asked if I am going, I indignantly answer, "Not until they stop using the wrong name and gender for one of our heroes!" His name is Alan [. . .] He never wavered from his identity as a man, and upon his death, his widow continued to insist that he was a man. Why would such a straight man be called a lesbian by the gay community when today we would certainly call him a female-to-male transsexual? [. . .] He was transsexual or, at least, a transgenderist - a true pioneer. One who is seen as a hero by today's transsexual community. Please don't let him be taken away from us by allowing his old name to be used as though it were a badge of honor.

Think about this story every time the "trans men never contributed to anything in history" discourse resurfaces again. If this can happen to a famous historical figure from the USA and from a relatively recent time who medically transitioned and was explicitly out as a trans man, imagine how many others from other countries, historical periods, and situations have been erased or "reclaimed".
