It was 3:25am when you woke up.
You reached an arm over to Paul's side of the bed and felt nothing but empty sheets. You swung your feet onto the floor, rubbing your eyes until you noticed the light creeping in from underneath the bedroom door. You got up and headed straight to the living room where you knew he'd still be.
Your suspicions were right and there he was, asleep in a pretty uncomfortable position. The bass still resting on his lap, the amp still on, an open notebook on the coffee table, pencils scattered everywhere. You walked over trying not to make any noise and made your way to the outlet to unplug the amp, but as if your very presence had startled him, he woke up at that exact moment.
-Hey... what are you doing?- his voice weak and sleepy.
-Turning this off- you shook the cable you were holding in your hand.
-Plug it back in I'm in the middle of something- he straightened himself up on the couch and adjusted the bass on his lap.
He leaned forward to grab the notebook full of scribbles, and suddenly you saw his expression shift into one of panic.
-What happened?- you asked puzzled, stepping closer to him.
-I was working on a bass line here and I didn't finish it... must've fallen asleep right after this part- he pointed at the notebook, more to himself than to you.
-It's really late love... you should come get some rest
-No I can't- he set the notebook aside on the sofa -I promised Ringo I'd come up with a good bass line for his new song... his only song on the album
-I know you're gonna write him something incredible, but you can keep working on it later in the morning when you have more energy and you're actually awake
-Tomorrow's monday I won't have time we have rehearsals and Ringo's probably gonna ask me how it's going and-
That information hit him like a plate crashing in a completely silent room
-Are you serious right now?
-Yes. If I'm not mistaken John mentioned you all agreed to take sundays off this month
-God... I don't even know where my head is- he let out a heavy sigh, rubbing both hands over his face like he could scrub the stress right out of him.
-You've been working so hard love I know that. That's why you have to take advantage of whatever little free time you do have to sleep and recharge- you reached out your hand to stroke his messy hair -you'll have all day tomorrow to finish it
You took his notebook, scanning the last page, taking a few seconds to read it.
-This looks good darling. Don't scrap this idea. I'm sure later you'll come up with something great to complete it
-You think so?- he looked up at you with those soft eyes, the ones that only come out when he's seeking your approval.
-I think so- you gave him the same tender look right back.
That was all it took for Paul to get up, set his bass aside and follow you to bed. No complaints. Just you reminding him sometimes it was okay to stop and get some sleep.
