i love giving my vampire the most inconvenient possible version of his own powers.

it's at the end of a Hongdae alley, down a set of stairs nobody uses. it's where her father wrote his songs before he died, and her mother sealed it up after and never went back. she stole the key out of a drawer years ago.

so she goes down there alone, on the nights she can get out. she holds his guitar against her chest and hums — not singing, nothing that brave. just a small sound that leaks out of her before she can stop it.

everywhere else in her life she has learned to be silent. she is very, very good at it now.

i wrote the night she finally ran.

she didn't plan it. there was no bag packed, no place to go. it just got to the point where staying wasn't survivable anymore, and something in her body decided before her mind did. and out of everything in that house, the one thing she reached for was her dead father's guitar.

not her phone. not a coat. not even shoes she could run in properly. just the guitar, because it was the only object in that entire house that had ever actually belonged to her.

and then she went out the back door into a downpour, with no umbrella, and disappeared into the city at night.

the part that gets me is that she wasn't running toward anything. there was nowhere for her to go. she just needed to not be in that house for one hour. that's it. that was the whole plan.

i think my favorite thing about his healing is that it doesn't ask for an explanation.

she's crying. and he doesn't say "what's wrong" or "tell me what happened" or any of the things people say when they need you to make your pain make sense to them first. he just comes close, moves the hair out of her face, and rests his fingers against her forehead. says the word, quiet. "Melting."

and whatever it is — the thing she couldn't put into words, the thing she didn't want to explain — it starts to soften. warm and gold and gone.

some sadness doesn't have a reason you can say out loud. sometimes you're just hurting, and you don't want to be interviewed about it, you just want it to stop. that's what his magic is for. it takes the pain without ever making her explain it first.

i need to explain the Korean goblin in my book because it's my favorite thing i've written.

so my vampire finds this tiny, wounded kitten in the rain. it has little horns. he heals it with his magic because he's soft like that. sweet moment, right?

WRONG. because the kitten is actually a dokkaebi — a Korean goblin spirit — and to repay the favor it EXPLODES into a three-meter-tall horned tiger-beast and challenges him to a traditional wrestling match. winner gets one wish.

and the best part is the goblin's whole personality. it's not some solemn ancient deity. it's a loud, cocky, big-brother-energy spirit who switches personas depending on its mood, loves wrestling, and talks like your rowdiest friend.
