she shook her head with a soft laugh. “what were you trying to make?” while directing the question to him she used both her hands to wave at her daughter, “hi baby come to mama!” pulling her away from Lie was a task, but once her hands found her hair she was captivated. “you never learned how to cook?”

“well i’ve always just had people doing things for me; i was barely home at times anyways.  i guess i just never thought it was a priority growing up when everywhere i turned someone was willing to just do it for me.” he answers.  “it’s supposed to be breakfast,” he says poking the burnt food on a plate with a fork.  “i’ll just order us some food, let me just grab my phone.”

when she woke up she left the unfamiliar feeling of being rested. that’s when elina reached over and checked the time. realizing just how late it actually was, a missing elijah, no crying baby, and something burning she sat bolt upright. in her best attempt not to panic she peeked into maya’s room and found it empty. her next plan led her to the kitchen where they both were, standing in front of a mess that would later need to be cleaned. “babe what are you doing?”

maya’s head perks up at the sound of her mom’s voice but eyes still looking at elijah as she plays with his face. “i’ve never realized how much i relied on staff before; it’s absolutely impeccable that i can recite anything in medical knowledge and history but i can’t cook.” he brushes his fingers through his hair, “not to mention, i have no contacts and my glasses will succumb to maya’s wrath in a matter of minutes and i swear being a privileged child has made me useless.”

elijah yawned, rubbing his eyes as his eyes squint to find his glasses on the bed side table but to no avail they’re not there. he sighs as he remembers he had stayed the night at elina’s then slowly eases up to find his book bag; slowly he moves to the bag pulling out his emergency glasses and putting them on.  he blinks finally able to see properly and grabs his shirt from the floor, pulling it on. his mind adjusts to he fact that it’s sunday and most importantly mother’s day; he looks back at elina sleeping form and thinks up of an idea.  it’s been a few weeks since meeting maya and elina deserved something for loving and caring for maya so he walks off to maya’s little crib pulling the smiling baby into his arms. “ how are you gorgeous?” he cooed at the child, watching the girl smile and rest her head on his chest.

“ we’re going to make some breakfast for mommy on this special day. ” he continues to coo, as they walk to the kitchen with maya gripping to his shirt as they start the adventures of making breakfast with one arm.

it takes exactly 28 minutes for them to be staring at a sad burnt breakfast. it takes maya .02 seconds to hide her head into his chest in shame. it takes 5 minutes for elijah to accept he doesn’t know shit about cooking.

“well, now i know why i was never allowed in the kitchen.”

she listened to him ramble on, internally gushing at how cute it actually was. “i could’ve picked anyone yes but you’re the only one who deserves to be here.”

he swallows slowly, “ okay. ”

“then it’s a good thing i know how to treat that.” slowly leading him towards the room she stopped in the middle of the hall, resting a hand on his cheek and gave him a soft smile. “you’ll be fine, i promise. i believe in you.”

“ i don’t get it, elina. ” he pauses, looking down at her. “ how can you be so calm letting me into her life? you could’ve picked anyone in the world and i’m the one standing here. ” he takes a deep breath, trying to stabilize his nervousness. “ a lot can go wrong, you know. one of my contacts can drop out of my eye and i’ll be half blind. unsafe. ”

reaching forward to take his hand she nodded and dragged him into the house. “i’ve never been more sure of anything.” she went through a mental checklist, letting him in on a key detail. “if she cries, it’s not you, it’s because i disrupted the peace.”

“ i’m going to be honest with you, elina. my heart is palpitating at a rate that would be considered dangerous, ” he says softly, letting her pull him into the place. “ i could have a heart attack at any moment. the only kid i’ve dealt with in my life was mishka and he hates me now. ”

she had just gotten maya to settle down when a knock rang out from the front door. “crap-”  lina glanced at herself in the mirror and reached for a new shirt, one covered in less baby food. swapping out the two in the hallway she quickly answered the door, tossing the old one over her shoulder. she couldn’t help but smile when she saw him, “you actually came.”

“ i said i wanted to fix things so here i am ” he’s waiting for his impulses to kick in and say something stupid. “ are you sure about this? ” there it was.

a deep breath; another step. he’s been doing this same mantra since he left his place after spending the whole day staring at the ceiling throwing his schedule off.  was he ready to meet maya? the thought that maya was potentially his child was always there but whenever elina asked if he wanted to know he refused.  was he even fit to be an adult figure for maya? most of his life was bad decisions and protecting his little brother; now he stands at her door ready for the child to hate him.

finally, he does it. he knocks on the door.

“ it’s always a suggestion. ” as much as elijah didn’t look like he cared, he did care about the members of riot. being vp sometimes felt more administrative as people gravitated towards alistair in his opinion then again if looks could kill, he’d be killing since he was a child. he popped a piece of gum in his mouth, “ i’ve had to hear medical jargon my whole life, this stuff is child's play.  though it’s good that you’re staying away from drugs, it can do some volatile things to you. ”

after she kissed him her entire body burned for his. the only prolonged period of time they hadn’t seen each other was, well when she was pregnant with maya. the look he gave her made her weak in the knees. elina’s hands held on to either side of his face, pulling him down to her again. in between kisses she mumbled out, “next class starts in thirty minutes.”

“ that’s more than enough time. ” he responds breathlessly before picking her up and plopping her on the nearest thing. a hand moving to her cheek cause what were the odds they’d be at the beginning of the cycle again.

eli bit the inside of her cheek to keep from smiling, telling herself to not actually get excited. “come over for dinner tomorrow, you don’t have to stay for very long, but you can meet her then.” standing on her tiptoes she pressed a soft kiss to his lips, “i really appreciate you making the effort.”

its been what, a week maybe two since she’s told him that she loved him.  he doesn’t know why he’s here trying to fix things but it was as if his impulses were telling him to do it. “yeah.” he responds after she kisses him, giving her this look of lust. the same look that started it all for the two of them.
