“Thanks, Sam. Haven’t seen you in a while, how’ve you been?”
“Highly honoured. That’s reason enough, I think. –Of course. Anyone can understand a day off. I’m free. Good job too, right? I’d hate to miss a rare occasion like this. I suppose I should get cleaned up, too?”
“With that perfect hair of yours? Please, I’m pretty sure there’s never a time you need to try and look good. I kind of wanted to go to New York City and see the Christmas lights, what do you think?”
“One of these days, Elise, I’m gonna figure out how to fight in my heels and no one’s going to be safe again. It’s always worth it to me.”
“Now that I’d pay to see, you should have your heels be wearable weapons too. Built-in daggers and all that fun crap.”
“I do. I wouldn’t mess with you. You do look beautiful, honestly. Though, that isn’t much of a change from how I usually see you. Just a little fancier. What’s the occasion?”
“See, this is why you’re my favourite guy. No occasion, I just figured I’d take a day off from training. I’m sure even my dad can understand wanting to take a day to do something fun. You free today?”
“Duly noted. Your hair looks really pretty like that, you should curl it more.”
“Thanks! I would, it just hardly seems worth it when it’s in a ponytail all the time.”
“Sorry. I was just taking it in. It’s a rather rare sight. I wanted to cherish it. You look… lovely.”
“You think so? Thanks, I haven’t done this in so long I thought I forgot how. Good thing I trust you and know you’re not just messing with me.”
“Oh. Well, this is a rare sight. Did you use my concealer? It’s missing. You don’t look half bad, though. Nice hair.”
“Please, I have my own concealer. I guess that’s enough of a compliment, I’ll take it. You think your mom would approve? You guys always know how to look so good.”
“What? Just because I normally go around in workout clothes doesn’t mean I don’t know how to dress up now and then.”

Mari quietly took the girl’s hand and squeezed before taking a few steps forward and releasing her grip. Instead, she wrapped her arms around Elise, hugging her tightly. This was one of the first times in her life she’d moved first to initiate contact with someone on an important level without flinching. “I..don’t f-feel tough. I don’t feel strong. I’m not…like you. I can’t win a fight with my hands. I’m a-always…relying on others. And other things. I want to be stronger than what I am…and prove..to everyone I’m not…I’m not broken.”
Elise hesitated for a second when Mari hugged her, but she recovered and smiled, hugging her back. “You don’t need to fight with your hands to be a good fighter. My hands are my best asset, but everyone has their own strengths. The strong ones know how to use their skills to their advantage. It doesn’t matter if you’re broken, that doesn’t stop you from being great.”
“No–No, not Morpheus. He…already is. He blessed me a time ago.” Mari’s voice was quiet, brows furrowing as she decided to confide in the daughter of Ares. “Dante. Papa. He..is strong. He saved me, and he–he’s saved a lot of people. If…if he didn’t..I wouldn’t be..–I don’t want to be a burden. Or weak. So I..I want to make him proud.” Lifting her head, she revealed watering eyes, the intensity of her longing simply overwhelming her. “Th-thank you.”
Elise reached out a comforting hand, the most comforting she could ever manage to be. “You’re not a burden, or weak. You’re a tough girl, I’ve seen that. Dante has to know that, there’s no way he couldn’t.”
“Outside of camp.” Mari hung her head for a few moments, before looking up at Elise, “I need to practise. I’m…I’m good. At fighting. I’m good. I want papa to be proud of me.”
“Morpheus? Trust me, I can understand that feeling more than anyone. All I want is for Ares to give me his blessing. Train with me, there’s no need to go out and do it alone,” she tried to be reassuring.
