Is anyone else planning for Halloween yet? I’ve been looking at costume predictions for this year on TikTok for probably about an hour now. It started when the Opera House announced they were opening up auditions for Wicked.

Halloween! Would you think poorly of me if I said I’d completely forgotten? I guess I could dress as some historical figure, but the question would be who. What are the predictions for the year? I hadn’t heard about auditiions! I’m no actress but I’d love to see the production when they open.

Sure, he knew that Guzmán would be pissed to find out he was sharing these pictures, but they were too good to not share with others. Especially someone that seemed to be having a pretty shitty day. Cammie was a good person, she deserved a little uplifting in the form of embarrassing photographs of Guzmán. “Oh, I mean, he didn’t talk to me for like, four hours, but then he realized that I was the only person in the area that he knew, so… it didn’t take too long for him to give in.” Ander replied with a shrug, before turning his attention to the waiter and ordering the same drink Cammie had. It was more along the lines of something Omar or perhaps Patrick would probably order, but… he supposed that drinking something strawberry flavored didn’t make him any less of a man. “Two years?” He questioned with a tilt of his head, unsure as to what Cammie was referring to. “Two years of what?” Whatever it was… he had a feeling it wasn’t good. At least based on Cammie’s body language. 

Cam laughed harder at the image in her head of Guzman trying to ignore his one companion in a foreign country. “I bet he did figure it out quickly, that sounds just like him. It does look like you two had a great time. And a much needed break, like you said before. Traveling is good for the soul, I’ve always believed that.” When Ander repeated her phrase she felt the color rising on her cheeks. Naturally, she’d put the cart before the horse, leaving out specifics deliberately but realized that hadn’t been the best of ideas. She took a deep breath, not able to look the man in the eyes. “Two years since I lost my wife.” The feeling in her chest was like a block of ice, and she could feel her fingertips tingling. “I don’t mean to be such a downer, this is supposed to be a celebration of your return.”

Ander wasn’t entirely sure he believed Cammie, but he wasn’t about to push her on a topic she clearly didn’t want to talk about. It’d be pretty damn hypocritical of him, if he did. Maybe the thing she needed was a distraction. And that he could provide. “You wanna see some pictures of Guzmán with a sharpie dick on his face?” He reached into his pocket for his phone, scrolling through his photo album before finding the pictures he’d been referring to, and sliding the phone across the table to show Cammie. “He’d been annoying me the night before, so… I got up a little early. He was pissed, but it was so worth it.” 

Cam perked up a bit when Ander mentioned having pictures of Guzman in that state. “You’re kidding! You do not have pictures of that!” Her smile widened a little bit further and she began to come to life a little more. Things were tough overall but had been even tougher over the past couple of weeks. It would have been better for her to talk to someone about it, but that’s just not who Campbell Clarington was. And, in the back of her head she always had the fear that opening up just might make someone think she was spiraling again, and the last thing she wanted was to wind up back in some of the places she had been in. Leaning over she took a look at Ander’s phone, a loud and sparkling laugh coming from her throat to fill the space around them. “That is hilarious! I’ll bet he didn’t mess with you again after that!” When the waiter made his way over, she smiled again though a little less genuine. After ordering a strawberry margarita, she gave Ander time to order before speaking again. “I’m sorry I’m a little bit of a Debbie Downer. It’s coming up on...Two years.” Campbell couldn’t bring herself to say much more, and she dropped her eyes back to the table.

Ander was relieved to discover that Cammie didn’t seem all that annoyed about his late arrival, especially considering the lectures he was used to getting from Guzmán, whenever he was so much as a minute late. It was nice, having a friend who wasn’t quite so high maintenance. “Really? Do you want to talk about it?” His head tilted to the side a little as he looked Cammie over with slight concern, wondering why exactly her day had felt so long. “Or is it just one of those days?” He’d certainly had plenty of those in the past, especially when he was sick. “Come on, you were the one waiting on me - you go first. My trip stories can wait.” 

Ever since school had started back up Campbell found herself becoming more and more tired, even though she worked hard to hide it. She was Campbell Clarington, after all, and her family wouldn’t have tolerated much more from her than they already had. It was important for her to work on regaining and rebuilding her image now, she knew what was expected of her. That was why it was so rare for her to open up about anything, especially things that she knew could lead to dangerous territory for her, meaning anything that might have pushed her back towards her vices. Still being more honest about her feelings and experiences was something her therapist was pushing for, and she had always sensed that Ander was a great listener. She shrugged and took a drink of the water she’d ordered while she waited. “There isn’t much to say Ander, and nothing nearly as exciting as what you’ve been up to. You’re right, it’s just one of those days. One of those tough days. I’ll survive somehow. Just with the start of school and everything that has been going on, I feel like I’ve just been going and going and going nonstop. Maybe it’s better that way, I don’t need too much time to think. It’s hard enough already.” Cammie looked down at the table sadly, but made herself smile again before looking back up at Ander. “I’m excited to hear those trip stories! I can imagine you and Guzman got into all kinds of things out there.”

A margarita wasn’t typically Ander’s first choice in a drink, but he’d been doing his best to try new things lately, and he wasn’t about to stop that now. At least this new thing he was trying happened to have alcohol in it. That’d certainly make the experience easier to handle. “Hey, sorry, I took a nap after class and overslept a little.” Ander greeted Cammie as he slid into the seat across from her at the booth she was waiting for him at, glancing over the menu in front of him so he could pick out his margarita flavor. “Have you been waiting long?” 

When Ander arrived Campbell locked her phone screen and slid it into her purse, giving him a smile and her full attention. “You don’t owe me an explanation, Ander it’s not a big deal. There isn’t a need for apologies. I don’t mind waiting any time but especially not when it comes to a friend.” Even though she didn’t need to, Cammie glanced at the menu in front of her. Alcohol surprisingly wasn’t something she had struggled too heavily with, and she saw nothing wrong with allowing herself a drink every now and again. “It hasn’t been long really but to be honest I lost track of time just a little. It has been a long day already, and it isn’t even 2 PM.” Cam shook her head while running her fingers through her hair, crossing her legs under the table. “How have you been Ander? I must hear all about your trip- where did you go?”

I guess I can understand that. I’ve kept a secret or two in the past myself. 

Sounds good to me. I’ll let you know, once I’ve figured out my schedule, yeah? Maybe next weekend sometime. 

I have, yes, several years ago. Though I didn’t do nearly as much as I should have with it. That’s alright, though. I have a second chance, and I don’t intend to squader it. 

Haven’t we all? It’s a difficult thing to do, for those in our position. Recognizable, public-eye positions, that is. 

Excellent. Yes, the weekend would work well. As far as I’m aware I have nothing going. That isn’t to say some sort of event won’t pop up- you know how that goes. But, we’ll make time. We must catch up.

Thanks. That’s really nice of you to say. Guzmán and I had an awesome time, I think it was well-needed for the both of us.  

I don’t think it really counts as a scheme, if we’re both in on it. But I guess that makes it sound more fun, so… I don’t mind. I’m not really a big latte guy, but if you want to change that to beers… I’m in. 

Of course, darling. Any time. That is excellent. Some time away like that isn’t a bad idea, really, but I’ve promised myself I’ll finish this time, before making a run for it. 

Semantics, but you’re right. Occasionally I enjoy feeling as though I’m being sneaky. Ah, of course. I can’t say I’m a huge beer drinker myself, though a margarita or glass of wine would be divine. I’m certain we’ll have an excellent time. Let me know what works for you, I’m sure with those lessons you’re offering, you’ll have a full schedule.

Hey, that works for me. Getting paid to not have to play tennis sounds like a win-win. 

Good! You both deserved and needed it, I’m just thrilled you got what you needed from it. I understand fresh starts, absolutely. I don’t blame you in the slightest. I meant what I said, you certainly deserved it. 

Wonderful, I’m so glad you’re willing to go along with the scheme. Why don’t we meet for lattes weekly instead? I believe that’s a far better use of our time.

I’m trying to buy a new car, and if I want that to happen I’m going to need to up the number of tennis lessons I’ve been giving lately, so… if anyone’s looking to pick up a new hobby, hit me up. I know a bunch of you around here have bottomless wallets, which I’m pretty sure means you can cough up some cash to get trained by an award winning athlete. @elitestarters​

Ander! It is lovely to see you back, darling. How was your trip? I think you and I both know me and tennis lessons simply don’t match, though you also know I wouldn’t mind paying for some, not, and saying we did.

I try, I try. It certainly is! And I’m doing pretty good, thank you. How about you? How are you? It’s been way too long! You know, I’ve actually been wanting to join for quite a while now, but I always felt like I had a bit too much on my plate to add yet another thing. This feels like the right moment, though, so I might take you up on that offer. Are there any extracurriculars you’re considering joining this year? 

I know you do, more than many others which is always heartwarming to see. Lovely to hear, I believe I’d have to be heartbroken if you weren’t doing well. LDE needs a friendly face, and we all know I’m not always the one to provide that, despite my best efforts. I am alright, thank you for asking. Working towards a ‘doing well’ answer but, truth be told I am still adjusting to being back. It absolutely has, and it is a true travesty. We’ll have to do lunch, if not this weekend then sometime next week. I hope you do, we could use someone like you. You’ve always had that certain flair others lack. It is a quality I truly admire about you. Well, you know you won’t find me far from the Dance Team, I’d considered moving in on the Captain’s spot this year but, we shall see. How are your classes going?
