oh whoops look out it’s my ?? half-baked au ramblings
ok so ever since aor people have tossed around different takes on an au where skektek leaves the castle and these are just my thoughts on one to mayhaps have as an au on here if anyone’s like interested in ’ skektek has Enough and snaps but this time heads dont get bashed in ’
the only good place i can think of for it in the timeline is post episode two but before Everything Else, since the general premise is trine’s worth of bullshit just finally becoming too much. have i thought about how this would effect the timeline and the war ? no because i’m not smart and just vibing but i have thought about what it means for skektek as a character. did skektek still have reservations when it came to draining around this point, concerns over the darkening, and regrets over leaving aughra ? yes ! because again pre-final episodes. but does it regret all the other fucked science it does on the regularly ? no. skektek is a very multi-faceted and interesting character with a lot of complicated standings, but i don’t wanna just Delete the fact that they’re someone who values science to dangerous extents at their core. skektek is still the dark half of tektih no matter what.
honestly i’ve thought less about actual plot and more about what it means symbolically ? we have this character so linked to machinery and concrete logic in a world of magic, removed from the scientific environment. yeah i imagine they’ve got something set up somewhere to continue their studies ( sidetic is prolly there too ) but it’s no laboratory.
they’re just. a cranky hermit who’s the sick to the back teeth of walking on eggshells and fucked off to the middle of nowhere, yelling at poor rando gelfling who stumble by to Leave Them Alone, this is bastard stomping ground now.
i Do have an alt version even Less baked through where skektek gets kicked out after the self-mutilation and what not for being a Freak but when i say less baked i mean it. it’s the au that’ll give you salmonella
“And so, around the circle, while the chorus of slaves chanted quietly, each Skeksis intoned the same phrase, which all then repeated, in a rite consigning their Emperor’s soul, which had never existed, to the protection of a higher being, in which none of the Skeksis could have tolerated belief. It was a ceremony of reassurance to the survivors.”
— A.C.H. Smith (Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal: The Novelization, page 35)
ok, realistically speaking, the surgeries put skekTek in a vulnerable position they haven't been in since they lost their eye and they would make sure they're secluded because of this also because they can't afford the distractions or to explain in the heat of the moment, but, consider, pov : you walk into the lab only to finds stacks upon stacks of medical books whisked away from the scroll-keeper's library + it's own notes and journals on the matter littered about, bandages and saws of varying kind and tools for cauterizing wounds, sprawling sketches of skexish anatomy as it's so far understood to be pinned up, two shiny new prosthetic limbs on a nearby table, and the scientist; already halfway through the bone of it's leg, biting down on something that it's probably about to throw at you because it is Pissed
Ashes and embers

you’re sitting alone again. you seem to exist nowhere at all and in every corner of the universe. you feel your organs shiver inside of you. today was a good day.

— Richard Siken
