The Lilac-breasted Roller (Coracias caudatus) is always dressed for spring. This vibrant bird, which can be found throughout parts of southeastern Africa, is a monogamous species that mates for life. Both males and females come in an array of pink and blue hues. It’s known for its acrobatic antics, especially during mating season: This bird’s elaborate courtship rituals include swooping, diving, and rolling through the air. Kazuhiro Hori's "I Cannot Be A Magical Girl."

Opening on November 19th, 2022 at Dorothy Circus Gallery in Rome, Italy is artist Kazuhiro Hori's phenomenal solo exhibition, "I Cannot Be A Magical Girl."

Like other great artists exhibiting at DCG, not least Ray Caesar, Kazuhiro chooses to depict himself and his experiences artistically through a female perspective.

The profound meaning of this artistic choice lies once again in the essence of the feminine. This choice intends to rewrite the iconography of the feminine so that it escapes the reductive symbolic key of the muse and simple source of sentimental inspiration. But instead, it is a re-write reality and artistic sensibility that investigates the unconscious, linked to the true nature of the feminine as a profound, brave and authentic search for the inner self.

In Hori's 6 acrylic paintings, the element of sweetness recurs, materialized in the numerous shapes of candies and sugars that the artist recalls symbolizing childhood. A childhood that changes flavor as it grows up, to the point that it now transmits its stickiness and bitterness. 

Hori's perspective on the reality of the feminine embraces adolescence from a broader perspective. In a way that bring both the girl and the boy closer to the truth about growing up and disillusionment, sowing the seeds of identification as well as an acknowledgement to raise awareness of understanding, equality and the idea of freedom. 

Through his sophisticated and refined language, the artist unravels the stimulating new scenarios of the brand-new series pervaded by a Vanitas Pop. All around it, flowers, worn-out teddy bears and disturbing creatures are twisted, yet kept at bay by the recurring magic wand sceptred by the power of imagination, an ambivalent escape route to flee as much from reality as from illusion.

Jillian Evelyn's "Connecting the Dots."

Opening on Saturday, November 12th, 2022 at Hashimoto Contemporary in Los Angeles, California is artist Jillian Evelyn's solo exhibition, "Connecting the Dots."

Returning for her second solo presentation with the gallery, Evelyn’s minimalist figures explore the body as form and shape while challenging censorship.

Drawn to the “simplicity of the nude female form,” Evelyn explores the beauty and visual interest of the human body. Each figure is distilled to their essential components, creating thoughtful contemplations exploring gesture, emotion, intimacy and bodily connection. The nude figures display confidence and humanity rather than sexuality in their states of undress. The intimate moments captured in each work exude strength in their vulnerability.

Evelyn’s visual language refines the human body down to simple shapes, a curved line to imply a shoulder, utilizing negative space to shape the shadow of a chin or a perfect, bright orange circle to represent a nipple. Each of the works share the vibrant circular shape in their respective compositions, representing a nipple (regardless of gender or species), a fruit or freckles - challenging the need for censorship and connecting each of the dots.
