We’re in a golden age of yuri anime where we’ve finally moved past “what if…two schoolgirls…were gay 😳” and that’s all the show is.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Bloom into You and Adachi and Shimamura a lot, but god is it refreshing to see yuri shows that can be more than just slice of life romance.
In the last couple years we’ve had lesbian college students going through a loose adaptation of Roadside Picnic with Japanese folklore mixed into the horror in Otherside Picnic
we have an isekai action fantasy about a lesbian assassin who works for the girlbossified Catholic Church to kill modern day people transported to her world in Executioner and Her Way of Life
we have Revue Starlight, a lesbian musical drama about theatre and swordfighting that’s so thematically dense and allusion-rich it makes me feel like I need to college again
We have Birdie Wing: a Girls’ Golf Story about a butch lesbian golfer who faces off against the mafia in life or death matches and against Japanese highschoolers in mini golf and both are presented with the same intensity
And that’s not even mentioning Princess Principal, the steampunk lesbian spy thriller about agents working for a communist revolution to overthrow the monarchy, and the many other yuri-adjacent shows we’ve had like Sound of the Sky that have been incredible
At a time when so many people on here are clamoring for scraps of representation from Disney children’s shows, it’s nice having so many wildly different anime about lesbians that are all also just genuinely good and interesting stories with depth to them.
