Can we talk about how surprised Emerald was here? She really didn’t expect anyone to protect her from whatever Salem was about to do to her. From her perspective, the plan of leaving without Salem noticing had already failed, team JOYR couldn’t move (not like they’d risk their lives for someone who had been their enemy until literally now anyway), Cinder was gone (so the statement ”Cinder isn’t here to protect you anymore” had come true in the end), Mercury, her only friend, was also gone, and there was no reason for Hazel to keep going with a plan that had already failed.

But Hazel did protect her, even if it meant sacrificing himself in a selfless way. There were no strings attached to Hazel’s actions, no debt to pay in exchange for this, unlike with Cinder.

And that’s the moment Emerald realized she wasn’t “loved by no one” anymore.
