Nimzy told me I should introduce myself. So.... Hi. Here I am.
My name is Ember Wilder and, if I'm being honest... I'm just as ordinary as this day has been. Which is to say, pretty damn ordinary. Sorry to disappoint.
It’s kind of ironic, actually. I spent a lot of time as a kid lost in daydreams about the extraordinary future that awaited me, and I always imagined that stepping into independence for the first time would feel like the beginning of an epic adventure—wind in my hair, destiny calling my name, magic everywhere I looked, yada, yada, yada. Instead, I tripped over an unpacked box and realized I had no one to talk to but you. Close enough, right? No offense.
It's not exactly the grand, cinematic entrance I used to envision, but hey, a girl’s gotta start somewhere, I suppose.
So here I am, finally living life on my own terms in my own home. It’s been…fine. I used to long to venture beyond the small town where I grew up so that I could chase inspiration around every corner. I thought, there's got to be so much more out there to discover, right!? The desire to create and experience beautiful things had my mind constantly brimming with dreams and ideas.
Turns out inspiration, passion, and ideas don’t protect you from reality. Or pay the bills.
Freelancing, however, does. Pay the bills, I mean. Sort of. I'm a writer by trade, though my paycheck to paycheck lifestyle disagrees that what I do can actually be labeled as a 'trade'. One day, though, the words in my head might just find their way onto the page in a way that actually does them justice. And maybe, just maybe, they’ll pay for a coffee or two. Until then, I’ll do what I can to keep the lights on (and try not to eat instant noodles for every meal).
Anyway, speaking of food, I should probably go spend some time solving the hard problem of how to keep it on the table. If all else fails, I’ll just charm my way into a dinner invitation from my new neighbors that came by earlier—kidding! (Mostly.)
Here’s to new beginnings, not getting trounced by reality, and, hopefully, eating edible meals. Wish me luck!
