As somebody who only joined the Negan fandom post-TV-Negan, was the fandom for comic-Negan always full of hateful/awful antis or was that a result of TV-Negan? I seriously got told to kill myself yesterday because I rebloged a Negan post. It's mad stupid and I was just curious about the origin of it all lol.
Mainly, yes. But there's always been people who hate Negan no matter what.
A brief history according to my observations. When I made my blog it was probably mid 2014. There was very little Negan content. Some fanart, and a few RP blogs. Very little fanfic, and the ones that came out were often variations of the theme: Negan forced OC (or Beth) to become his wife, sexual harassment ensued and she killed him.
When the Terminus episode rolled around with the big rapey guy, people were speculating he was Negan. Since the topic of Negan being made flesh on TV was now in the air... More and more Negan hate began to surface. Alot came from the Beth fan crowd. Lol.
Anyway, there was tons of long-winded blog posts about how Negan was a rapist and anyone who liked Negan was a 'rape apologist'. At this time in the comics we'd had Negan kill rapey David and the Savior Laura confirm Sherry was a gold diggin' ho who left Dwight willingly to be pampered by Negan. (yeah, I know the show didn't end up sticking to this. Ugh.)
Many of these 'he's a rapist' posts contained comic 'facts' that were totally made up by the Negan haters who clearly hadn't ever read an issue. It was pretty obvious. I made quite a few posts about how misinformed they were but I never really received hate personally that I can remember. However seeing posts about how liking Negan meant you were a 'rape supporter and misogynist' made me block alot of these jokers. (and some blocked me.)
So that was the landscape pre-TV Negan. The closer it got to him appearing, the more hate came out. So once he became a prominent well known character on a popular show, combined with how the show chose to portray him (ie: butcher him...IMO) well, that's when the hate really seemed to take off. More people equals more haters who like to send their cowardly little hate anons because they're too pussy to do it to your face.
So, is TV Negan to blame or simply the fact he's expanded into more people's lives..? I don't know. I do think even if he had been portrayed exactly to the comics, there would still be haters.
But being a comic Negan blog, I haven't got a ton of hate. Hell, more of my hate came from TV Negan fans that didn't like my dislike of him. Lol. But yes. I have seen the hate TV/Negan fans in general get. It's stupid as hell as you said. Maybe I don't get much because I blocked so many hater blogs back in the day, or I just don't have enough people seeing my blog to care.
Anyway that was long as hell....lol!
