I'm Bentley (they/them/theirs) and this is my project. Combat Colorism is a project designed to educate my community while combating the negative effects of colorism through series of posters, workshops, and social media. Hi everyone, it’s been a while! I took a step back from here and this project, but lately I’ve been thinking about this blog and was wondering if people think it’s worth it to continue? I feel like I’ve run out of steam in terms of making new content to educate people about colorism, but I’d be more than happy to start combatcolorismsaturdays up again and maybe do some community wide discussion posts? Let me know what y’all think!

I’ve really loved getting to know so many of you and learning more about colorism + putting out content, but I’ve decided to end this project here. Maybe in the future it’ll be something that makes sense for me to continue, but as of right now it’s not. Thank you for the input and the good memories! There’s also something to be said about how I can choose to step back and not think about colorism as often as a person with light skin, but I’m too tired for that right now. I will absolutely leave this blog up as an archive though! Be safe and well everyone, it’s been real 💗.

So there is this memory that keeps coming back to me from a little over 10 years ago: I was about 14-15 years old walking in the Palisades mall with my family and this recruiter came up to my mother and asked her if she wanted to sign her kids up for modeling. He then proceeded to point out my sisters and my brother. She declined and we walked away.

It stuck with me because I wonder why I wasn’t good enough to be picked. It had pretty back up all those times that I was called ugly in middle school and destroyed what little self confidence I had in myself.

It took over a decade to get to this point so I’m hella proud to e able to have had my first photoshoot even if it isn’t a professional one lol.
