Croxatto & Opazo Arquitectos Design Two Holiday Cabins in Chile that Hover over the Pacific Ocean
Perched high above the Pacific Ocean at Matanzas, a coastal community in Chile famous for its miles-long sandy beaches and dramatic rock formations, the two holiday cabins that Santiago-based Croxatto & Opazo Arquitectos designed eschew spaciousness and luxurious amenities for panoramic views, seductive seclusion and a wondrous sense of levitation.
Named after two small bird species native to the region, “La Loica” and “La Tagua” precariously yet elegantly cling to the cliffside like birds resting on a narrow rock ledge. Only 19 and 24 square-metres in floorspace respectively, the compact dwellings feel neither cramped nor confined thanks to their double-height living rooms, floor-to-ceiling windows, built-in furniture and generous balconies designed as an extension of the interiors.

The pre-existing traditional Zagorje cottage is situated on the green slopes near Kumrovec and was structurally and statically in poor condition. It was renovated taking into consideration the characteristics of local heritage and design. The pre-existing house form is kept, while the porch is substituted with a glass cube. To give the cottage southern exposure, the glass form is slided out of the main house volume, simultaneously forming an entrance area. Interaction of interior and exterior spaces is enabled by opening of the glass walls.

A “Naturally Comfortable” Home
RF C9 in San Esteban
The 60-square-metre cabin designed by Gonzalo Iturriaga is named in RF C9, and has a basic suite of rooms consisting of two bedrooms, a bathroom and a large living room. It is designed to offer a simple space where its mountaineer owner can rest. An irregularly pitched roof and sides that slope inwards give the structure its faceted form. One triangular plane folds down from the roof to shade a stretch of decking that extends out from the lounge.
