James and Lily series → Part 1(a): September 1st, 1976 (beginning of sixth year)
The summer had not been easy and careless as Lily would have liked. There were one too many things plaguing her mind and throwing her off balance - the most critical being Severus no longer her friend.
Predictably, when she stepped off the Hogwarts Express onto the platform at Hogsmeade, the person who - in an indirect way - caused her to lose her best friend bombarded her instantly. She halted as he dashed in front of her.
“Did you know any girl at this school would kill to date me?” said James Potter, tilting his head in the way that made Lily want to rip it off. Honestly, did he really have the audacity to do this after what happened in June?
This time was different, though. This time, he didn’t have that arrogant smirk that said this was all a game and he knew that she’d say no. No, not at all. This time - he was dead serious. He was genuinely curious as to why Lily would not go out with him. This realization only made Lily more frustrated with him, for being so bloody disbelieving that one girl would not satisfy his needs.
“Am I honestly that bad?” said Potter, looking as frustrated as Lily felt.
Oh, how she’d love to answer that question. So she did.
“You’re worse than bad, James. You’re arrogant, and a bully. Everything a gentleman shouldn’t be.”
James gave her a long, hardened look before he turned away. Instantly, and unfortunately, Lily pitied him. Damn this good nature! He had turned and lowered his head in what was most certainly an act of hurt. Or he could just be pretending, for Lily. Yes. Of course he was. He had to be. He couldn’t be so upset that Lily had said that, she had done so plenty of times before.
Except of course, this time she was genuinely angry when she said it. This time, she meant it, and she made sure he knew it in the tone of her voice. This time, James Potter wasn’t playing around and was fully serious about her.
Damn it, Lily thought, knowing she was in for a year.
