The last post from December 2017 stated upper abdominal pain; it turned out to be my gallbladder which was removed in February of 2018. While the surgeon took out the gallbladder, he took a liver biopsy because there were lesions noticeable on the ultrasound. Nothing cancerous, but I do have Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (abbreviated from now on to NAFLD). I was on study medications as part…

Currently watching the husband get into it with another White professor over the latter’s use of the phrase “off the reservation.”
Here’s the thing - nobody’s forbidding your crusty old New England tenured high society ass from using the phrase. We’re just trying for a hot minute to get you to realize that literally the only time Native people come up in your conversation is as a misunderstood cliche from 150+ years ago: off the reservation, on the warpath, smoke signals, low man on the totem pole.
(An anecdote from yesterday: I took my kids to their just before the start of school parent-teacher conference. While with my 12 year old daughter, I happened to refer to her with a nickname I use for her, Little Bear. The 30 year old White para in the room with us turned to my daughter and asked her, “Is that your spirit animal?”)
You don’t realize it, and you won’t recognize it, but these messages to us are constant. Your history erases us and your language continues to erase us. Yet we are still here.
Why would you seek to heap more erasure onto what is already an unbearable situation for us? According to you our very existence is a problem because it inhibits you from using poorly chosen idioms; what a shame.
Do better.
“But free healthcare has issues too” yes, it does. And some of them are based on systematic sexism, racism and ableism and is a larger societal problem and not a unique result of “free” healthcare being shit.
And speaking from the point of view as a UK citizen, a lot of the issues with things like long wait times and lack of resources, stem from budget cuts and conservative moves to privatize the health sector for profit.
Which forces hospitals to run like a business rather than a public service, while still being funded like a public service, which forces cutting costs in places they really shouldn’t be cut.
Meanwhile, multi billion conglomerates are skipping out on paying taxes and living wages by having their banking in off shore accounts, and politicians get their “stately” manion houses fixed by tax payer money, and accept extortionate pay rises to the cost of taxpayers, while the rest of the UK is subsisting on food banks and searching for things like “how to make a guillotine” to such a notable degree it briefly trended.
It’s almost like extreme austerity measures geared to make a profit, don’t work, and the issue with “free” health care isn’t the real issue, but rather the way politicians have been steadily trying to kill the NHS to make way for for profit healthcare models. Weird.

I went to the Garrett Regional Medical Center emergency room this morning due to level 7 pain in my upper right abdomen. I knew my alt and ast levels were high because the study coordinator called me on Friday and told me and gave me instructions to take milk thistle to get the levels back down. I was also instructed to get medical attention if I developed fever, nausea, diarrhea, or abdominal…

Clinical Trials, Christmas Prep, and Mall Crud
This year’s edition of mall crud is viral gastroenteritis and it is a particularly violent strain. At first I thought I was having bad reactions to the clinical trial medications, just as they were icing in and really helping, so I had to stop taking them. That is until my husband started getting the same symptoms a bit more intensely and then gave it back to me. I spent 14 hours this past Monday…

I started a double blind clinical drug trial a week ago and have had some interesting reactions. I have already contacted the study coordinator and he is going to talk to the doctors. I will hear probably tomorrow what the next steps are going to be.

Explanation for the Extended Absence

I did the whole drive for Lyft thing in Morgantown and that was…interesting and for another blog post.
