Closed Starter: By The Water (Jade/Katie)
The water was calming. School, however, was stressful. Too stressful. Especially given the latest message from her mother.
Jade swam through the Enchanted Lake, blissfully ignorant to the world around her. The ever bustling human world. She was glad not to be part of it.
The mermaid swam to the surface, spotting a stranger walking down the path. Wonderful. Her peace was disturbed. She went to the edge of the stone platform quietly, hoping not to be seen.

"The Caribbean?" Jade asked incredulously, scrunching her face in confusion. "No, I'm from Merroway Cove. Isn't the Caribbean where they... eat humans?"
The mermaid slowly pulled herself up onto the platform, barely succeeding. She looked up at the human. She was wary of Jade, that much was clear. "If it helps, Merroway Cove tries not to associate with humans at all."

“Tell my brother I said that it’s impossible. Oh, I’m on speaker? Sheldon, there’s no such thing as mermaids. Look, they might be royalty, but there’s a line in the sand and their stories are way, way too far out there, more like legends. No. No ghosts. No aliens. No fairies. Are you done? Nope, okay. No angels. No demons. No monsters– you’re like the enthusiastic version of Buffy. Are you done? Thank you. Okay. I love you guys. I need to find my room and get settled in. Okay. Love you. Bye.”
Hanging up her phone, Sylvia rolls her eyes a bit and checks her paperwork– from the orientation information to her class schedule to the map to her dorm room assignment. Sighing, she shakes her head and goes to put everything away… bumping into someone with a yelp. “Oh! Sorry, I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
Jade hated Auradon. Most people despised her because she was a mermaid, all because of one from Atlantica that ruined it for all of them. And the worst part was she couldn't even leave.
But she was pulled out of her thoughts by the conversation. Obviously a human, and one from outside by the sound of it. She tried to keep walking, to walk past her, but only succeeded in walking into her.
"No it's- it's fine," Jade sighed. "At least you weren't holding a cup of water." Then she paused. Should she address it, or ignore it? "What are you doing in Auradon if you don't believe in any of us? It's one thing to be hated for what you are, and another entirely to be thought of as myth."

Katie hated the Enchanted Lake. She’d hated since the stupid gym class where she’d found a Caribbean mermaid- a mermaid who acted like she knew her, as if a regular old mermaid wasn’t bad enough -and the teacher had given her an F for leaving. What, like her life was worth passing up a grade? Please.
But the dratted place seemed like a good place to be left alone if she was going to ditch a class. And she needed to think. About what she was going to do about her father. About Annabelle. About Aziz. About Aziz’s-dumb-cousin. And about this whole council thing- she needed to talk to Maristela and Rosie. It might be a good idea to check on her mother too...
Sighing, Katie reached the edge of the path and began to pace back and forth on the shoreline of the lake, thinking aloud:
“I could go to Tortuga. I mean, that’s the place to start for anything- but I’d need a crew, and I can’t just drum up a crew. And how would Annabelle take that after everything I’d said-”
Katie cut herself off mid-thought as she heard a ripple in the water. It was faint, but it was different. Water didn’t lap here. There were no waves. There was no reason for a ripple to occur...meaning something was in the water.
“Hello?” Katie queried warily, instantly hating how stupid she sounded. Like some idiot in a horror movie waiting to be killed. She rolled her eyes, determined to make her own narrative, then drew a sword:
“Show yourself,” she demanded, scanning the surface for any sign of danger.
Jade slowly pushed herself off the platform, looking up at the stranger. She waved nervously.
"Er... hi. I'm Jade," she said with an anxious smile.
