This is a watercolor-like portrait of Jay, a film director, looking through a viewfinder, spontaneously manifested by my spirit guides in steam coming from a pot of boiling pasta, during the course of a film shoot I was working on with him at the time. The colorization arose naturally from raising the saturation of the video still.

Steam ITC, digital photography, January 16th, 2022. As with the digital ITC, closer examination reveals that the larger images are created from smaller ones. The eye is the symbol of my personal guide, Salvador.

Excerpt from Session on December 14th, 2021, steam ITC, Emily Cheeger
This video is an excerpt from a longer steam ITC video session, in which I reached my hand in for a few seconds to smooth a wrinkle in the backdrop. In a sense, it is “behind the scenes” footage that turned into documentation. You can see the spirits interacting with my hand, including Papa Zi, who appears in profile, wearing spectacles, as if inspecting what I am doing with the backdrop. The video was shot at 24FPS, but because steam moves so quickly, in order to see each image appear, it is necessary to slow it down.
In this excerpt, several frames show an African spirit appearing near my finger. The consistency of its appearance from frame to frame, and its expressiveness, is remarkable.
