When a section of a tree fossilizes, it is replaced sell-by-cell with silica. The pattern of the inner circle of this garment is the molecular structure of cellulose.

Gravitational Lensing, Emily Koerner, 2015

When light passes a source of gravity, typically a large galaxy, it bends and distorts. This is called gravitational lensing, and can be used to study objects behind a dense galaxy.

This garment is a gold linen dress printed with galaxies then gold-leafed. The outer garment is a sheer smock with hand-beaded galaxies.

Aplite is a mixture of quartz and feldspar that forms in cracks in existing rocks. With this piece, I looked at change over time and interactions between radically different processes.

Redshift Skirt, Emily Koerner 2015

machine knit, mixed fibers

Redshift happens to light when the light emitting object is moving away from the viewer. As the object moves, the wavelength of the light itself is stretched, making it appear more red. In this case, the light from galaxies billions of light-years away is shifted into the infrared.

This one is a chart of plutonic rocks, its so simple because the star magnitudes wore me out a bit

This one is a blackwork chart of the absolute magnitudes of the 50 brightest stars in our sky, excluding the sun. This one took most of winter break.

I was researching plant cells for another embroidery, and I noticed that a lot of them look like nebulas, so here's the orion nebula in the colors of plant cells! I also find it amusing that I embroidered a nebula in plant cell colors and patterns in a plant thread on a plant fabric printed with flowers

for this piece, my professor had just taught us how to smock, and I love my broccoli-print fabric, so the natural result of this is Smoccoli!
