Continuing with possible design ideas, this time using the lemonade flavoured drink as inspiration. I tried to make the fruit appear to be layered paper by adding shadow behind each layer, this allowed for a more realistic view of what the final would look like.
Paper experiment 1
-we used cardboard to place in between the layers to get the shadow between each. This worked well and is a technique we will continue using
-we found paper with a variety of shades which helped up massively, if we ran out we would use the same colour, the shadows helping us create the same effect. However, this is one sided colours paper meaning bits of white are visible close up. This is fine in the experimentation period but would need changing for the final.
- took a long time to complete but this was out first attempt and we shall improve and develop as we go
-main issue - blueberries worked well in the sketch but aren't recognizable when made from paper. We need to use a more recognizable fruit such as lemon or orange, as shown below we made one at the end of the session which immediately looked better and was more effective
Sketch 2 procreate As the previous sketch was too simplistic, I tried to add more detail into my next design. the layers have individual holes/bubbles added into them which I got inspiration from 1010 who I looked at in my research. I also want them to represent to bubbles you would find within a fizz drinks can. I used the blueberry flavour as the drink choice for this design, getting the palette the same as before and swatching an image. I think this version is more successful as I tried to add more detailing with the fruit by layering up a variety of colours. One issue I had with this design is using the imagery the hand imagery they supplied us with to use in wanted. The look of them as well as the ‘salute’ in the typography reminded my peers of nazi propaganda which I clearly saw and understood when looked at. Because of this I swapped out the hands with shapes that made the blueberries appear to be bursting out of the centre. From this me and my partner will now develop this idea into a paper format to see how well it translates onto a different medium. I think one of the key problems with this will be finding paper to practice with that contains enough shades to layer, as well as figuring out the lighting/shading for each layer.
Sketch 1 procreate I used inspiration from my research for this design to layer the paper in the background, using different shades on each layer to make it appear 3D. To get this colour palette I used an image of the can from the Dalston website and swatched a range of shades. They cherry’s are drawn in the 3D format to mix up the imagery the display has, using an origami technique to produce. the typography is from a pack that the brief supplied me with as it’s one of the companies slogans. Even though I like the look of this design, I think it’s quite simplistic for such a big window display and would need more elements added to it to appear more visually engaging. I also think the palette is very similar to ones of Vimto and could confuse customers because of the vibe and overall loom it has. Having the Dalston logo would help with this and is a key element I think out final designs will need to include.

Window Display inspiration Pinterest After doing primary research I wanted to look further into displays that use paper as a medium. Above are some interesting and creative examples and how much variety you can do with paper. I chose ones with bright colours and numerous layers as it matches the sort of imagery I am creating so far with this brief.
Primary research
As we are aiming to produce a window display me and my partner set off around Birmingham to see what sort of designs were around us. We didn't find any that were paper based but we did find inspiration in ways that typography was placed on to the window surface as a sticker.
We also found an Easter display that used paint looking splats as window stickers. Dalston uses graffiti splats which we originally thought would be difficult to recreate with paper. Using a window sticker may be helpful to us in this situation

She ranges from set design, packaging design and window displays. Birmingham symphony orchestra 2017-2018 The design idea for this piece was mixing together sound waves with Birmingham architecture. The patterns were selected from numerous buildings such as The cube and Birmingham Library. The bright colours make the images pop against the contrasting white background, showing the excitement and feeling of the music. Most other paper designs I have seen show the layered paper in my much more open way, whereas here they hide a lot of it behind the silhouette of the instrument. This design is one to consider as it gives the overall image a much more sleek and clean look.
Fanta paper advertising campaign. A rebranding campaign that I found on Pinterest, created by Adrian Woods & Gidi van Maarseveen who are designers based in Amsterdam.
Ideation
A design I created as a large poster that could be shown in a shop window display. Using the imagery the brand gave as well as the colour palette for the lemonade drinks can. The different shades in the image represent different layers of paper that would be built up to create a 3D look and design.
I think this design is very bright and eye catching, representing the playful aspect Dalston has. Eventhough we have now decided to stick to a full window display, we can use aspect and the layering of paper from this design.
Initial ideas and sketches
Created by both myself and Katherine using pro create
As a window display we want it to be bright and expressive. We tried the logo being centre with exploding elements behind, as well as more typographic based designs. As an idea we also tried exploring how a large 3D drinks can would look but decided it didn’t work as well as our display ideas.
Developing the YCN brief
As a team we came up with potential ideas that we could do with paper for this project. We tried to come up with as many ideas as possible to see the range of styles we could use and design.
Overall, together we both decided that a window display would work out best as it would make an impact to viewers going by with the bright colours and imagery. We want to do a mix between flat paper designs as well as 3D elements.
