Paper weaving created using a 300 year old linen weaving pattern
So I’ve been pretty quite on the art front for a while, but for good reason!
Last October I help put on an event at my work as part of the amazing Big Draw Festival.
We invited people to come along and draw their own maps of Northallerton using inspiration from historic maps and photographs we hold in the archive. We encouraged people to draw buildings and journeys and places special to them.
Anyway, we submitted our event to the organisers and WE WON AN AWARD!!
The Community, Participatory and Libraries award to be specific, which was incredible considering the amazing groups who also had put on events.
We were invited down to London for the ceremony which was such an experience, or course I volunteered to say a speech on stage which was so nerve wracking! But hey, not bad at 23 to say I’ve received an award and made as acceptance speech, biggest career achievement yet!
Big Draw are such an amazing charity and really help spread the word on how important drawing is, whether its traditional or completely experimental. Nothing more evident than in an archive where everything is hand drawn/written.
We ate mini Yorkshire Puddings and ate cheesecake made by a GBBO winner (only Francis Quinn!!), it was such an inspirational day and really spurred us on to do more and carry it on for years to come!
Part of my ‘Lines’ project. From continuous line drawings to weaving paper and then combining the two.
Had a bit of a break, back with working on some blind drawings from life drawing

Really lovely patterns on some old photographs! Zoomed in and contrast edited.

Might start a new body of work. I've done hands, now feet!
Using the new technique with fine liner that I'm really enjoying.
Scanned in my life drawings and printed a couple out to try out adding some colour in different styles.
Went back to one of my preferred mediums, the sewing machine!
Taking inspiration from my job, I drew the county of North Riding (what is now North Yorkshire) and the main roads.
I love the loose threads and the new lines it creates.
My entry into the art competition at work.
Included a map of my hometown of Northallerton onto the hand. The train line actually fitted in with my life line on my hand. And in fact the train line has been a life line.
Went back to college days and used cellulose thinner to print the faint map lines onto the drawing.
