PAST
Emiri is what some people would call an oopsies baby. With three older siblings, her parents had not been planning or expecting another baby when they got pregnant with Emiri. She soon became the baby girl princess though, earning her place as the quintessential baby sister. Growing up, Emiri was brought up in the familyâs Primrose Heights house and lived a pretty charmed life. She has little memories of her parents not being there for big life moments of all of her siblings and herself. Rare memories of fights, or not having anything they wanted or needed. She only has memories of growing up in a happy household.
When Emiri graduated high school, she had to decide what she wanted to do. For a good part of her life, sheâd fallen in love with music. She was decent, having played in band before she attempted some things herself. Trying open mic nights at coffee shops, attempting to dabble in songwriting, and posting videos on YouTube singing covers. Nothing came from it, but she hadnât lost her dream. For school, she had wanted to continue her music pursuits. Emiri applied to schools that has music programs, even attempted Juilliard but she didnât get accepted. It was during the application process that Emiri first experienced her parents being strict and truly fighting with them. They didnât want her to go into a music program, or even a music career. They thought it was too volatile of a career choice and too hard to make money. Her parents wanted her to pursue a real degree for a real job. Though she fought them and applied and was accepted into some music programs, it was them threatening to not pay for college that eventually made Emiri give in and choose a different degree.
Originally she attended for chemistry having always enjoyed science, but quickly switched to a double major of meteorology and communications. Moving to Chicago had been good for Emiri, she fell in love with the city and flourished with her independence. She continued to pursue music, still playing in coffee shops, posting on socials and even got a gig with a local band who played weddings and events. She wasnât making much money, but she felt proud she hadnât given up completely on her passion.
Tragedy struck Emiri the first time during the summer between her freshman and sophomore year. Her oldest brother Selim had been the first to enlist, and Adem had followed in his footsteps. Perhaps it was her young age, but Emiri had never worried about them. Of course theyâd be safe. War wasnât so bad these days. Or so she had believed until Selim came home injured and ended his own life. If she closes her eyes she could still hear her mom wailing. She could still see her dad crumpling to the floor. One day her brother was here. And the next he was erased from the Earth. Gone. Dead. The tragedy touched her family, took root and effected them all even after the grief lifted as much as it could. Her mother was never the same, sheâs never seen the light truly return. Her other brother spiraled, taking to drink and letting it effecting every aspect of his life. His engagement to Dilara crumbled away, only to end in the woman who was a friend and big sister to her visit her in Chicago at school and tell her. Perhaps she was effected by it all too, even though Emiri wouldnât admit to it. Maybe it made her more jaded, more closed off, more willing to go after what she wanted regardless of others, and more selfish. But sheâd refuse to admit that might have played a part in what happened next.
It was during one wedding she was hired for with the others in the band that she met him. Sheâd caught the eye of the governor and after speaking to him for a little at the bar, he discreetly got word to her that he wanted to see her. It all happened so fast, but while Emiri knew it was wrong she couldnât bring herself to care. It didnât matter that he was married. Or that it would have to be a secret. Or that he was older than her and used his position of power. Emiri knew what she was doing and soon became his mistress. Heâd buy her gifts, rent fancy hotels for them when he was in town. Private dinners. Clothes. Jewelry. Secret rides in cars to come to him. It all was a high she enjoyed riding and knowingly continued. She wasnât naive, she was sure there were other girls. And heâd never leave his wife. But she didnât care, as long as he kept wanting her and spoiling her Emiri was happy. Life was too short to care otherwise.
Maybe she would have kept it up after college if she had decided to stay. Emiri was already looking for jobs in Chicago after senior year when the story broke. Some reporter had seen them and got a picture. The local newspapers took the story and ran. The Illinois governor was having an affair with a college student. Emiri fell into the media storm, it blowing up momentarily outside of Illinois until another story caught the mediaâs attention. She was painted as the whore. The temptress and harlot. Of course they ended things right away, him having to do damage control and apologize again and again. But her reputation was damaged too. When her parents found out Emiri had never seen them so angry. They were close to turning their backs on her, but couldnât lose another child so they helped her. Paying for lawyers and trying to clean up the scandal as best they could by trying to remove her name, by painting her as a victim taken advantage of by a married governor who should have known better.
PRESENT
With her life in Chicago destroyed, Emiri only stayed long enough after graduation for the legal battle and deals while looking for jobs elsewhere. She finally got a job at Channel 4 as a meteorologist in East Haven where the scandal hadnât been as wide spread or known. Though she wants to be in front of the camera, right now they only hired her to be behind the scenes. Emiri wouldnât let that stop her though, sheâd start over away from the scandal and work her way to become the weather person. Sheâd dive into music again. Sheâd start over and not let the scandal follow her. Sheâd not let herself feel guilty, since at the end of day she only regretted getting caught. Or so she told herself every day. With her brother back in town, sheâd be working on herself and her family. Maybe this time itâd all be ok
Emiri has no plans to stay in East Haven forever. She's back to lick her wounds, to ride out the scandal and to rise from her ashes. While she'd prefer to work in a bigger city, Channel 4 is still a respectable station for her to work her way to being in front of the camera. Once she gets a few years experience there, she can apply to a bigger station in another city. Then she'd have the experience on her resume and her name associated with the channel rather than some media scandal in Chicago.
