         “ that one is pasta. you can choose the type, the sauce, the protein. all of that stuff, ” chesa answered. she was a pasta fan so while it was her favorite, it might not have appealed to everyone else. “ there are a lot of others, though depending on the type of cuisine you like. you should certainly take some time and walk around. ”

"Oh my god, that’s amazing,” Emma sang. “Pasta is  everything.” The girl was definitely hungry, but she had a thing about eating alone. It felt like eyes were on her much more than if she did it in company. “Will you be having some too?”

Once at the bar, Oliver’s hand moved to rest on the small of her back, and he stood a few centimetres behind her, as if to shield her from the crowd, from anyone who might bump into her. “Let’s get you a water to start, and then a drink if you still feel like it after that, how about that?” He held up two fingers to the bartender, calling water over the noise, and then slid one bottle to Emma once it arrived. “Re-hydrate, love,” he smiled. “Then you can have whatever you like.”

Emma certainly noticed his hand on her back, and she definitely didn’t mind it; in fact, welcomed it in a place this packed. “You know what? That’s a terrific idea. I hadn’t thought of that,” she stated matter-of-factly. If she had been more of a party girl, she’d know the wise adage of having water between your drinks, but this was a rare day for Emma. “Thanks,” she said gratefully, accepting the bottle and unscrewing its cap. After she’d had a few sips she realised were much needed, the brunette looked up at Oliver. “So, uh, have you had a good week this week?” she called over the din of music, attempting to make some conversation.

She nodded, listening. “Honestly, I think you should treat yourself. We have such good escorts, you’ll feel like you got your money’s worth.” When she mentioned conflict of interest, she smirked. “I don’t think there will be if you’re a maid. If you were a security guard, I could see where you were coming from though.”

"But...” It was hard to explain to her, because Emma hadn’t explained it to anybody at Votive really; the reason she worked so hard to send money back home to her father. “I don’t know. I just can’t do it. Maybe on a weekend I’m feeling particularly brave or there’s a 50% off offer or something,” she joked, shrugging. Even though it was what she wanted, because a regular date? That sounded terrifying. But a guy from Votive who would know all her wants and needs and how to treat her...it sounded almost too good to be true. “Why a security guard?” she asked, curious.

it’s a setting fitting for her, and he wonders why she chose to clean up other peoples messes instead of  making her own,   the good kind that is.   then again he isn’t one to question anothers life choices, there could be any number of reasons as to why she’s a maid and not a dancer or escort despite both professions suiting the beautiful way she moves.  she spins, faster than he expects and she bumps him, his arms coming to rest at her sides to steady her.  tobias smiles,  “you’re good.”  the crimson that spreads upon her cheek is adorable,   coupled with the fair complexion, it reminds him a lot of himself and maybe that’s why he loves it so much— shows that he’s not the only one with a bright blush.   he leans in, dragging her closer, certainly closing the gap between them,   “I want to take you to my room,” he won’t have his way with her while she’s drunk, he’s about consent, but he wants to make sure she’s okay,  especially with the tipsy way she’s moving.

She leans into him and it’s a good feeling. She feels safe while Tobias is there — not that she had felt unsafe before, but there’s a particular comfort being around him; that were she to trip or fall, or stumble sideways a bit like she had just now, he would be there to catch her. “Oh?” the question catches her by surprise, but Emma goes along with it. They’d had dinner and spent some time getting to know one another, and she was more perhaps now than just the girl who cleaned his room. “Yes. Alright,” she agrees, louder now over the music. “But you must lead the way, or we might get hopelessly lost.”

“so, did you take care of him?” morgan asked, listening as the woman told the story but never bothering to look up from her phone. “i mean people have sex with the staff around here too, right?” she questioned, finally placing her phone down. she noticed the slight tint of her cheeks and laughed softly. “thank you, gorgeous. here…” morgan got up from the bed and finished around in her bag for a crisp one hundred dollar bill, handing it over to the blonde. “just a little weekend money for you. i appreciate you being such a doll.”

"What? Me? Oh goodness no,” Emma said with a shake of her head, almost like she was offended at the suggestion, but of course she was too polite to truly feel anything but shock. “They...do, yeah,” the blonde said with some hesitation, “but as far as I know, it’s always off duty. I don’t know about the others, but us maids are strictly forbidden to do anything, even if we get propositioned. I suppose it makes sense, otherwise everyone would be fucking instead of cleaning,” she said, somewhat nonchalantly. 

It wasn’t often she got a hundred dollar tip, and Emma was left flabbergasted every time. “Thank you. Thanks so much,” she said with a big nod, ever so grateful for the woman. “If there’s ever anything you need, just about anything at all, ask for ‘Emma the maid’ when you call reception and I’ll be here.”

“Craziest thing that’s happened to me these past few weeks is that I slept with my ex-boyfriend and ended up humiliating myself in front of this guy I thought liked me the way I liked him. All of a sudden, I’m back in high school making rookie life mistakes.” Cassidy said with a shake of her head, dusting her hands off. She then looked at Emma with wide eyes. 

“No way? What made you decide not to push through with it? Not that you don’t look extra cute in that uniform, and not that you aren’t doing a fantastic job with what you’re doing now.” Cassidy said with a tilt of her head. 

"Oh noooo. I’m so sorry,” Emma said, because she could truly commiserate. “I have an ex I still kind of have feelings for, so I totally get that.” He was back in New Jersey though and probably didn’t even remember she existed, so there was that.

“I don’t know...I thought it would be a very different job, just dressing up cute and looking nice for your client, and acting all sweet, and it was a lot more than that...I mean, yes, I knew there would be sex involved, obviously I’m not stupid, but when I got here the friend who originally invited me, she just decided to leave. So she told me all these horror stories, left, and I got too scared to do it and took up a maid’s vacancy. And well here I am, half a year later still. I won’t lie i still think I could do it sometimes, because I know I’d be earning twice or three times the amount of money I do now but eh, I’m still a chickenshit.”

"Noah,” she said with a nod, feeling a bit awkward somehow, like she was meant to be doing something despite the fact her shift ended and she was free to roam the hotel as she pleased. “So, is it your first time at Votive Noah, or are you a returning guest?” Wow, what a dumb question to ask, she thought to herself. But it was too late now.

"Oh yeah? Done a lot of bad things?” she said, a full grin on her face. Now she was just pushing it maybe, partially scared she’d find out something about the guy that would make her reconsider their friendship. Maybe. But no, Emma thought, Jameson was one of the good guys. “No, I’m free this evening. That sounds great. What kind of movie did you have in mind? I’m game for anything, just maybe not some crazy horror, that always gets me.”

"It’s a big place, I’ll give it that,” Emma said, nodding. Entire months she’d gone without running into or seeing the key people who ran this business, but such was part of life at Votive, the partial mystery of it all. “Yeah, I do! The pay is good, and I live here as well, which, you know, cuts down on rent considerably. I honestly don’t know what I would’ve done if all my rent had gone to living in some tiny cupboard in this city. —And you?”

That made Emma laugh again. “Well I don’t know what I could ever do to punish you, but I promise not to stroke your ego too much.” She shook her head. “I remind you of sunshine? Really? That’s actually the nicest thing anyone’s ever said.”

Oliver smiled faintly and held his hand out for her, nodding in the direction of the bar. “Job or not, you still deserve a drink, and I definitely do insist,” he replied. Once she had agreed, he led her off the dance floor, away from the speakers. Leading her to the front of the line, he gestured at the bartender ( one of the perks of being a long time escort at Votive was the somewhat special treatment ). “What can I get you – sorry, I just realised I don’t actually know your name, fuck, that’s awful of me.”

She took Oliver’s hand and followed him, finding this all somehow very exciting. She did mingle with some of the staff at Votive after hours, but to be at parties with them? It was rare. “That’s alright. I’m Emma. And I’ll just have whatever you’re having,” she said with a shrug. In her somewhat inebriated state she was having a hard time recalling drink names anyway.

To confess or not to confess, that was the question. “I’ve actually uh...well I’ve contemplated buying myself a guest pass for one evening and, y’know...an escort.” She went bright red from saying just that. “But then I remember the price and I just can’t justify spending that much money on myself, besides I don’t know if it creates some sort of conflict of interest with me being staff here...”

Noah watched the woman as she considered his invitation, grinning triumphantly when she acquiesced. “That’s fine with me, besides, if I were to accidentally push you in, I’m sure you’d much rather be out of uniform,” he joked, then put his hands up. “I promise, I’ll try not to push you in.” Though, he definitely wasn’t opposed to seeing her wet.

She was almost surprised to find him still there, but Emma returned now, in a much more sensible outfit of a striped shirt and a yellow skirt. “So sorry, my locker jammed and I couldn’t get it open somehow. That thing has a life of its own.” She took a seat right beside him, by the edge of the pool, tucking her feet under her. “I’m Emma, by the way.”

"Well if that’s everything, I’ll get going now,” Emma said with a smile and a nod, backing up. She’d done all she could in this room, beyond the few things scattered here and there, but those were his personal belongings and she figured he would like them just where they were. “I hope you have a nice day, Sir.”
