“It didn’t mean anything. I screwed up, I just- you were being nice and I took advantage of that, and sorry, okay? But it didn’t mean anything… it didn’t.”
"Oh...” her eyes fell to the ground. “I just thought ... ”
Brooklyn let out a snort. “God, I hate that word. There’s nothing to be sorry about,” she said. “I’m not one of those scarred children of divorce who have no social skills and practically live on trains.”
"I suppose that’s right. Always look on the bright side of life, right?”
“Right.” Terri tugged onto the sleeves of her jumper nervously, biting down on her lip. “Look, Emma… you’re nice, and sweet, but…”
“But...”
“Actually all I learned as a kid was random Eastern European languages. Nothing about sharing –or caring, now that you mention it.”
“Oh... I’m sorry.”
Terri sucked in air through her nose, keeping her demeanour composed. “Yes?”
“We - uh - you and me ... in the greenhouse.”
“If by ‘try’ you mean 'eat the whole bloody thing’, then yeah, I’d love to try it.”
“Come on Brook, what did they teach you as a kid? Sharing is caring?”
“There’s no one.”
“ ... Alright.”
Katherine laughed bitterly. “And who are you? My mother?”
“Just someone who’s worried about your health.”
“It’s a pretty sad opinion though, right?” Terri brought her hands to the staff of her neck, darting her eyes down at the ground awkwardly. “I’m sure you’ll find someone to spend the rest of your life with, but having fun regardless of being in a relationship is good too.”
She paused, the butterflies returning to her stomach, “hey Terri,” Emma said slowly, “can I ask you a question?”
“I’m free now if you want; we could go to Hogsmeade, grab a couple of butterbeers?”
“Yes! I have so many things I need to catch you up on as well!”
“That’s all good and well but magic created flying brooms.”
“Magic is by far the better of the two,” she agreed, “but for muggles science is really cool. I remember in grade school I loved science, probably the magic in me and all that.”
“Cookies and cream cheesecake?” Brooklyn repeated, jaw almost dropping. “That sounds kinda like the best fucking thing in the world. I’d offer to help, but I can’t even read my own writing most of the time.”
She nodded eagerly, “if I make it do you want to try it?”
Terri shrugged, faltering slightly. “I just don’t see it in my future.” She lied, or well, answered vaguely as she could.
"To each their own.” She replied, bobbing her head from side to side. “Everyone has different opinion on things, that’s the beauty of people.”
“That’s a lie, I probably never want to get married. Ever.”
“Why not?”
“But you’re still in your teens, and Jenna is barely sixteen years old. Marriage isn’t important. Heck, I don’t think I’d ever want to get married maybe until I’m thirty five.”
“Thirty five?”
“A few tears? Boy, your mother that eager for you to date?”
“She is. You should have seen her when Jenna and Albus break up. I don’t think she spoke to Jenna for a good few days and not because of what she did - she doesn’t know that - but because she was single. The greatest joy of her darling daughters are to be married.”
