Opinion on characters coming back from the dead in soap?

I feel like I've been very clear on my feelings about Graham coming back from the dead in soap. Haha.

As a general rule, I say don't do it. But especially if their death story involved a whole whodunnit and we definitely saw the damn body.

I feel like if we didn't see the body and there is some mystery to it, then I'm more okay with the idea. But it has to be done well.

I know you hate Graham so I hope you don’t mind this ask. Who do you think Rhona will choose next week? I think she might choose Marlon mainly because of the family even though she might love Graham. They might end up having an affair which I could sort of understand as Marlon nice guy and all but he is a bit of a drip☺️

I do hate Graham. Haha.

But no, I agree, I think she will ultimately choose Marlon here first and then they're going to torture me with some kind of affair and blow up a perfectly fine relationship for nothing.

And then what?

Because Graham is actively trying to murder Kim right now. We still don't know why he had Jodie in his van. He's not really being the good man she thinks he is.

So does she eventually find that out? Does Graham continue to do worse things? If she has this affair and wrecks her marriage and her family and then ends up not wanting Graham in the end either, what then?

Does she come crawling back to Marlon?

Do we now just have two more single people sharing kids? And now they have to find new relationships for them with limited options?

I just feel like there's a lack of foresight here.

I keep telling myself it’s early days and that’s why we still don’t quite know what the point of Graham’s return was. How has Joe’s life changed since he came back? Not much. He had scenes with Cain but Joe was unbothered by the cancer and it was Moira who ultimately decided to sell. Did he come back to break up Marlon and Rhona? That could’ve happened by itself after what they’ve been through the past year. Is he here to create conflict between Joe and Kim? That can happen by itself as well because they’re different with how they approach things. They still haven’t explained (on this show) why he had that woman in his van during Corriedale. Maybe that’s to come? Why is he here?????

I mean he's been around for 2 and a half months now and what purpose has he served? None as far as I can tell.

Has he made any difference in the farm sale stuff? Not really. I guess he found Vic and got her to come back and sign but they could have done that any other way. She was leaving anyway.

His oh so great deeds helping Cain that Rhona can't seem to shut up about amounted to him lying to Joe about the stupid Delorean and saying Cain didn't steal it when Joe knew he did. And honestly, if Joe found the Delorean, we could have sped up his blackmail of Cain over the farm and sped up the sale. So...Graham made it worse. Otherwise, all he did was fail the loyalty test Joe had set up for him, which wouldn't have needed to happen at all if he weren't there.

And for all his claims to want to make Joe better, he's just enabling his bad behavior. He also can't seem to see Joe for who he really is, that this is him and it' snot all Kim's fault. He also doesn't really see Kim for who she is either anymore. She's actually changed quite a bit since he last saw her in 2020. With Will and with Dawn and the kids and being friends with Lydia and all that. And Gabby and Thomas too.

She's still ambitious and likes the finer things in life and is a force to be reckoned with but she's not quite as cut throat with people anymore, not people in the village anyway, not when she doesn't need to be.

But he's calling her a monster and I feel like he's projecting.

I also just feel like Joe needed Graham more when he first came into the show because he didn't have any other family coming in with him so it kind of made sense. But Joe coming back last year, he has people around him now. He's outgrown the need for Graham as a character.

I feel like Graham is just regressing all of the characters around him. The show keeps trying to drag these characters back to who they were when they were around Graham and I think it's a terrible idea. They'd all moved on and they were better for it.

It also just annoys me that in a time of budget cuts and limited screen time, they went out of their way to bring back a dead character, an actor who can't be that cheap to get, and then give him all this screen time to explain his nonsensical resurrection and new convoluted backstories and now they're throwing in this love triangle/affair nonsense too.

I mean obviously I'm incredibly biased against him because I didn't like him the first time around either but everything since his return has just kind of proved he doesn't have a purpose anymore and he is redundant and I don' know why they bothered to bring him back when they could have spent that money and time on anyone and anything else.

And I'll still keep saying that I wish they brought Jean Tate in, instead. At least that would be been a new dynamic up at Home Farm and would have brought in another female character, which they need.

So yes...what is the point of him beyond the shock value of having him pop in Corriedale. The further we get from Corriedale, the more mad I am that they did Corriedale at all. I didn't want it in the first place and then I got sucked in and now I just feel like it made everything worse.

I would love to know what all of the original plans were before everything had to get stretched and delayed and what not for Corriedale purposes.

Vic is gone so joe doesnt hold any power over robert anymore, does he? What am i missing? Surely if he told the dingles wtf happened, they would all rally around him and aaron and take joe down. The way they are doing this is just annoying. Robert is like a kicked dog and just takes the shit the dingles throw at him. Aggravating!

Also, i know aaron loves both robert and his family, but he seems more upset at losing cain etc than being on team soon to be husband. Just bizarre writing. I am tired of the ‘aaron is annoyed with robert for the 83857th time’ scenes.

I think that first we have to accept that we are 2 episodes into this new part of the story and they've had literally 3 scenes. So we don't know how it's all going to play out.

Second, just because Vic isn't there, doesn't mean the video is irrelevant completely. He could still make things difficult, make it hard for her to come back. Robert wouldn't want that either. That said, who knows if it will come up again.

I suppose if they ever do have the IDs thing come out, he could tell everyone what happened. I hope that's what happens eventually but the show really has not been a fan of letting the whole truth about things come out lately, and especially not with Robert. See the fact that John strangled him before the wrenching. Or any number of things regarding Kev.

Third, at some point, if this is sticking and it seems like the show is committed to making this big changeover with the farm, everyone will reconcile. And if Robron are staying together and Aaron is going to marry a tenant farmer, they are going to have to make him be on board with this. So I think we just have to be a little patient.

That said, I really would like them to let Aaron speak more and express his feelings and if he is all in, I want to see that reflected and hear him say it. I need the show to put in at least some of the work.

At the same time, this is a big change and Aaron was a little blindsided with it and the ultimatum was thrown in his face by Cain and he chose Robert because he loves Robert and he wont' lose him again and I think it's okay if it takes him a minute to wrap his head around it all.

So really, I think we just need to wait and see what they do with it before we totally spiral.

In theory this is a big change for them both individually and as a couple. It's exactly what we kind of wanted. It's allowing them to do something new, to start a new chapter, to build something that's theirs in the present and not just rely on what they had in the past. That's a good thing.

I have my reservations and my skepticism too but I'm trying to be cautiously positive here. Don't make me reinstate the zen zone anon. Haha. I agree they need to do better than they have in the past but I'm willing to at least give them more than three scenes and two episodes.

Dream scenario: Joe somehow becomes destitute as Robron’s farm thrives. In order to get any money he can, sells to Robert. Boom. Tenancy over. This might take a while 😂.

Haha. Sounds like a plan. How do we make Joe broke? Can Robert trick him into making a spectacularly bad investment?

She needs to stop doing that 😂😂. Part of the reason she’s in this mess is because she went rogue and didn’t bother having a team meeting before making deals with Celia.

Yeah I'm still frustrated by how they did all of that. Like I know that it was because they needed her to make bad decisions and be the one to get blamed for all of this but all of the pacing of everything is so wonky. What with how we got all the farm stuff over the summer and then they abandoned it all with Robert to do the Kev stuff and now he's back to it being his life's dream. And Cain being MIA all fall because he was having John feelings off screen. And Mack and Ross being tied up with Baby stuff and Vic being involved in Kev stuff or just not around.

And we never once had a scene with Moira consulting or even telling Vic and Robert about the turkey stuff. There's just zero continuity there and it's a bit frustrating. And again, I get that they weren't supposed to be part of it but I don't know...it was all really strangely done.

I want to go back and make them not do Corriedale and see what the back half of the year was originally meant to be. Haha.

I hate the Dingles so much.

Haha. Well..

See I don't hate the individual Dingles. I love some of them a lot. A well as some of the individual family units.

And I mean I like them when they do actually all come together to support someone like they did with Cain's cancer news on Tuesday.

But I hate their hypocrisy and their Dingle Code bullshit and their constantly kicking people out of the family bullshit.

Like I'm not even mad at them being upset in general at Robert and Aaron or the situation, especially because it was a decision Moira made without even talking to Cain. It came as a shock and it's quite a change. And because Robert is shit at explaining himself and Joe is making him look bad, Robert doesn't come out of this looking particularly great.

But Chas not taking Aaron's calls and not being willing to talk to him is stupid. And her being all "Robert will never have a place in this family again" is just ridiculous. And it's not even that it's ridiculous for her to be upset because sure, fine, but A) talk to your damn son and stop being a child about it and B) it's not like they haven't all done worse and C) from a show perspective, it will all be fine eventually so it feels a bit silly.

Like how many times have they already done this to like every single person in this family. They've all been kicked out at one point or another and it gets exhausting to watch. Especially when it becomes this whole family thing and everyone has to fall in line.

Like Cain and the people who actually work on the farm, have a right to be a little upset or confused about it all. Matty has a right to be upset about losing his family home, which isn't even down to Robert anyway. But Chas should talk to her son. And Sam is still working for the Tates and was just in a feud with Cain about it a few months ago. So it's just all very "for the plot", which makes it extra annoying.

Cause like, conflict and feuds are fine but sometimes they feel overly manufactured. And when the Dingle family is as big as it is, it feels even more over the top.

Graham already “cheating” on Rhona and their affair hasn’t even started yet. Trying to revive all his dead relationships and thinking they can just continue where they left off. Fair enough, Robert tried to do the same with Aaron. But at least they’re doing something different with them now. Whoever Graham ends up, whether it’s Joe, Rhona or Kim, where do they go from here?

Ah yes...the eternal question (since apparently he can't die)...what is the point of Graham?

But it's fine, you're not seeing the bigger picture anon! He's only "cheating" on Rhona with Kim to prove that Kim is a horrible person! I mean...probably. Either that or this was real and then she rejects him after and that's why he decides to drive a wedge between Joe and Kim even more.

I just truly do not understand what they're trying to do with him.

None of these characters need him in their lives. And he makes me actively start hating these characters when they're in scenes with him.

Like RHONA!!! What are you doing??!! You dated this man for like two months and yes, you were willing to steal your child from his father and run away with him but it was literally to give people more motivation to want to kill him. This was not real!

And yet they're acting like they are Robron and that he just had to come back for Rhona and to save her and April from Evil Ray just like Robert was trying to save Aaron from Evil John!

But Robron were together off and on for 5 years! They got married twice! They did and do have that soulmate thing going on and it feels far more earned that whatever the fuck they're claiming with Rhona and Graham. And Robert may have divorced Aaron but he was IN PRISON!!! Not playing dead for 6 years (which some people did want for his exit mind you).

Not to mention that Rhona and Marlon were having a hard time, yes, but NOT WITH EACH OTHER!!! THEY WERE FINE! THEY WERE A TEAM! THIS IS INFURIATING! AND I DON'T WANT TO WATCH IT.

And Marlon and Rhona need a break from heavy stories, not more of them. Let them heal! Let them have a nice story in there before you pile on the misery again!

And KIM!!!! You LOATHE this man! And I loved you for that. You're so much better than him. You deserve so much more than him. My god can we please get Kim a decent fucking love interest on this show!

And this love triangle or whatever it is, is so forced, I can't even deal with it. And it was the A Plot today. WHYYYYYYY!!?!?!?!?!

And his flirting is abysmal. Dear god.

And then there's Joe.

That scene the other day with Joe and Dawn and Kim at Home Farm, just the three of them, so much better than when Graham is there being useless and making cryptic comments for no reason.

SIR IF YOU'RE GOING TO DO SOMETHING TO MAKE JOE SUDDENLY BE A MORAL UPSTANDING CITIZEN SO HE'LL RUN AWAY WITH YOU OR WHATEVER THE GOAL IS THEN FUCKING DO IT ALREADY!!!!!

As you can see...I am still not over my Graham hatred and they're making it worse every day.

I think I might actually rather watch DS Walsh interrogate someone.

There has to be more to this than just wanting to be back in Joe’s life. Because quite frankly, that sounds boring as hell. Let him want Home Farm and to be lord of the manor or something. Let him want the wealth or have access to it so he can finance any shady dealings he may be involved in because as you mentioned before, what the hell was that woman doing in his van???? What’s the story there? It’s been two months and if Graham has an ulterior motive, I wish they would reveal it by now.

Yes give him another convoluted backstory to add to my list so he can have some motivation! Haha.

But no really, right now he makes zero sense to me so I'm going to need them to explain some things. And do it quickly cause I'm bored.

I am annoyed that he’s pretending to be moral and then being awful. If you want to be Joe’s evil minion, then just own it.

Maybe Graham is being like how Joe is with Dawn. Pretending he’s changed but he’s actually being shitty or he’s just trying to make himself look like he’s a better person than Kim. But that doesn’t make sense either because what’s the endgame here? Have Joe back in his life and play house and pretend to be a good person but he’s secretly enabling him to be bad?

This is my whole issue with Graham. I don't understand what he wants and why.

He's so disapproving of Joe and blaming it on Kim but then he's being just as bad if not worse using Cain's cancer diagnosis to pressure him to sell the farm so Joe can get what he wants.

I'd rather he just own that he wants to help Joe no matter the cost and be like yeah, I am using your health against you. I am a mustache twirling villain and I'm okay with that.

I just don't understand what the show wants me to think about him.

Because it doesn't seem like he's struggling at all either.

Like if he was so desperate to stay in Joe's life that he felt like he had to go against his moral code and use Cain's cancer like this to get Joe what he wants and that was causing him to feel torn and feel guilt and struggle with the moral implications of his actions...but like...that's not what we're doing here. Cause he's a robot and he barely shows emotion anyway.

I just...I don't get it. I don't get his character. And so even if I could get past the robotic line deliveries and the convoluted backstories, I just can't enjoy the campy dramatics of it all because he just doesn't even make sense and I don't know why he's here.

Not the spoilers calling Graham “sadistic” 😂. Trying to turn Joe against the woman who owns the house he’s crashing in. If I were Kim, would call the police and tell them there’s a trespasser in my home.

The "sadistic" spoiler made me laugh. He may be a lot of things, but I don't know if "sadistic" is the word I would use to describe him. That might actually make him interesting if he was. Haha.

I'm still just waiting for that story to stop going around in circles.

If Graham is genuinely against what Joe is doing, then he needs to grow a backbone and stand up to him. But he won’t because he’s trying to placate him so he’ll fully let him back into his life. What happens when he also starts pursuing Rhona? Will the conflict with Joe quickly resolve itself so Graham can try and weasel his way back into someone else’s life or will he be pulling a double duty?

I just don't understand what they're trying to do here. And that "full picture" line really threw me because what the hell does that mean??

Cause again, if he expects Joe to care about Cain's cancer, that's not going to happen.

And if he just can't tell him about Cain's cancer because he thinks he's being moral about it and then turns around and uses said cancer to emotionally manipulate him into selling the farm, then he's being worse than both Joe and Kim. If he's so against Kim's methods and being all morally superior about it, why would this be okay???

And if he's just trying to do all of the dirty work to keep Joe pure or so he can get back in his good graces so then he can change him for the good...then like fuck off sir.

Stand up and do the right thing if that's what you're going to be preaching to Joe.

I just don't get it. But it's fucking boring as hell to watch in the meantime.

Do you think Joe would be doing the exact same thing he would be doing now even if Graham wasn’t around? He just came back so maybe it’s too early to gauge how big of an influence he’s been so far. But I don’t think he’s swaying him one way or another.

I mean he was already doing the same thing. He started his blackmail stuff before he even knew Graham was alive. From an in world, character perspective, yes, I think he'd be doing the same thing.

From a show narrative perspective, who knows. I mean, they certainly started this story back in July, so the Tates going after the farm was a story they were already telling. So some version of this was probably always in the works.

I just think Middle Management Graham is a step we could really cut out because I just don't think he's doing anything worthwhile.

I really wish I could get on board and find their over dramatic scenes entertaining and giggle over the fact that the show treats them like more of a couple than Joe and Dawn half the time, but Graham is just such a stupid useless character to me and I just don't care about his relationship with Joe at all so Joe being all "I'll wait while you pull this knife out of my back" or whatever dramatic nonsense he came out with today, just makes me roll my eyes. There are no stakes for me for their relationship because I do not care about it in the slightest. Graham could have gotten cut in half by a stray chainsaw today and I would have cheered. Haha.

I just don't get him at all or why in the hell the show decided it was a good idea to resurrect him.

But anyway I have one and this feels like the place to put it (even though I have no idea why anyone would shout at you about/block you for the views you express on a fictional character in a TV show on your own blog but):

I really don't see how Graham can think/imagine that Joe's behaviour at the moment is all (mostly) because of Kim's bad influence on him when he's seen with his own eyes/has more than enough evidence that it's actually all (mostly) just Joe??

It was mostly because I got blocked by a blog that made nice gifs and I assume it was because of my anti graham posts so I was trying to give those people a blog to block instead that wasn't my main soap blog so I could still reblog the nice gifs.

That did not work out. Haha.

Also it seemed like maybe a nice thing to have an ask blog so that my main blog wasn't just clogged up by endless asks because I get a lot. (See my 2700 unanswered asks in my inbox and 13 in this one haha)

But no, this is what I was talking about with respect to Graham. His pov makes zero sense because he's attributing all of this bad behavior in Joe to Kim when she's not the one driving it. It's all Joe. And Joe has told him that it's all his idea.

I feel like Graham has rose colored glasses when he looks at Joe and just wants to blame everything on Kim when he spent far more time with Joe himself and Joe has made it clear this is what he wants to do while Kim is telling him to back off.

I don't really get what they're trying to do here but it's already getting tedious. Especially because despite keeping the cancer secret, which sure, fine, although that might actually maybe get Joe to back down. But aside from that, he's literally using Cain's cancer to try and get him to sell so Joe can have his precious land????

Like, he's just enabling him to keep doing the bad behavior he supposedly hates and blames on Kim.

What are we doing here?

Is he just hoping that he can gain his trust by being loyal so then he can enact his big plan to make Joe a better person because I don't think that's going to work.

Anyway...I'm confused and bored already.
