New Year, New Friends | Rose & Emmy
Rose hummed in the back of her throat at the reveal of the girl’s full name, debating in her head whether she could see it or not. She shook her head just slightly after a very quick moment of deciding. “Mmm, you look like you’d be a better Emmy than Emmeline. You can’t get much of anything out of Rose, it’s short enough already.” One could add an i and make it Rosie, but she didn’t see the point, most times. “Happy to guide a young lost soul.” She said dryly, with a sideways smirk to match. With the words, she insinuated vaguely that she had guessed at Emmy’s age already, and also letting her know that it wouldn’t really get in the way of things. In this moment, she really could see her younger self reflected back at her; this one seemed a bit more together than she’d been, but all the same, Rose’s every sense had been overloaded when she first began getting into things she shouldn’t be. She liked it that way; she’d just steer Emmy away from mistakes she had made in the past, or she could try to, at the very least. "Don’t we all. Though, some come to forget, some come looking for a certain someone they won’t admit to, some don’t know why they come…" She trailed off, lost in the never ending commentary entirely inside her head. She was beginning to fit into the last category, though, she’d never truly admit it. "I guess I should thank your brother, then, because otherwise I don’t know what kind of shit my bored self might be getting herself into." Rose laughed, as if she’d be any better behaved now that she had a partner in crime. Now there was just someone to share the fun with. Besides, the things Rose tended to get into were, for the most part, harmless, minus the fight she’d caused. In her defense, she really didn’t think they’d take it that far physically, maybe just a heated argument. Her smile was small, but constantly on her face, and she couldn’t miss the excitement that presented itself in Emmy’s tone of voice and her body language. The chill was beginning to get to Rose, who was dressed in a short sleeve shirt full of sequins and a skirt that barely made it halfway down her thighs. She did in fact have a coat, a thick, long one that transcended the length of her skirt, which she’d grabbed effortlessly on the way out of the house. The trip was a short one, though, and the cab was much warmer than its outside surroundings. Giving him the address, Rose then leaned back into the seat and grinned. “It does, doesn’t it? Maybe movies are true in some aspects of life.” She said, looking over at her, and the seat belt she’d put on. She hadn’t bothered, and the reminder to wouldn’t make her, either. It didn’t take very long, the neighborhood only about ten minutes away; but it was a huge difference from the party they’d just left. It could almost be comparable to a party in The Great Gatsby; there was a huge house, loud music and the general sounds people made, and an atmosphere that naturally made the adrenaline start pumping. Rose handed the driver his earned wad of bills, giving the man in his thirties both a verbal thank you and a kiss on the cheek before exiting the car, standing with her back to the house and holding her arms up. “Now aren’t you glad you came along with me? I know all the cool people… and the rich ones.” She laughed as she led their way in, making sure she was following a few times.
Emmy couldn’t help but agree with the fact that she seemed more like an Emmy than an Emmeline. Never had she felt like Emmeline fit her very well. It was just not who she was. It seemed way too proper and that was just not who she was. Prim and proper lifestyles were things that she was trying too hard to avoid. “I’ve never understood the point of making Rose into Rosie unless you are under the age of ten,” Emmy replied with a slight shrug. It was cute for little kids, but once you were a little older it didn’t make sense to have cutesy little nicknames. Of course she shouldn’t be one to judge. She was eighteen and Kieren still called her M’nM. Sometimes those cutesy little nick names just stuck with you, even if you didn’t want them to. Honestly, Emmy was just grateful that Rose was willing to help her. She was still so new to the city and still had so much to learn. It was going to take time before she figured out everything that she needed to know about Alexandria.
She laughed and nodded. “Yeah, he’s a bartender so somehow I think this is like the busiest night of the year in that world.” Deep down Emmy had kinda wished that Kieren had been able to take the night off so they could do something together, but she understood that he had to work. After all, he hadn’t been planning for his kid sister to show up on his doorstep after years without so much as a phone call. It was complicated and Kieren had been living his life without her for a long time. Now they just needed to find a way to mesh back together without causing too many conflicts. She was living on his couch though, so she didn’t know how long living without conflicts would be able to last.
“I think you’re right about that,” Emmy agreed with a slight nod. All movies held some aspect of reality in them. It was interesting but she also wasn’t completely sure she believed most of the aspects of movies that she saw. Luckily for her, the cab ride wasn’t too long and when they pulled up in front of the party, Emmy couldn’t believe her eyes. It was amazing and she was suddenly extremely glad that Kieren had to work that night. If he hadn’t then there was no way she would have found herself to this party with Rose. Emmy got out of the cab while Rose paid for their ride and she simply stood there gawking at the sight before her. Now she really felt like she was in a movie and that was more than a little unbelievable.
The moment that Rose spoke again, Emmy glanced over at her and grinned. “Hell yeah I am,” she retorted before she ran her fingers through her hair. “This seems like it’ll be awesome.” Without another word the younger girl started towards the house and headed inside. The music was loud and pounded her eardrums but she loved it. She loved the entire atmosphere of parties like these. Emmy spun around to see if Rose was still behind her. She was and the girl grinned even wider. “This is so great!” This was even better than the frat parties that she’d gone to when she was in college and that was saying quite a bit. For a brief moment she was worried that Rose might run into some friends and ditch her, but she thought that fear wasn’t truly based in anything.
Emmy moved her way through the crowded house and danced around to the music slightly. She grabbed Rose’s hand and tugged her closer to her. “Let’s dance!” They could get some drinks in a few minutes but for now Emmy was far too caught up in the amazing atmosphere of this party to worry about furthering her buzz. Besides, she loved this music. Music had always spoken to her in the best possible ways. It was something she suppressed a lot of the time but by escaping her parents’ clutches, she was able to learn a little more about who she was as a person. That was the best possible thing for her.
