I just love how Laurence is Temeraire’s voice of reason

Currently reading Victory of Eagles and Laurence is undertaking the dishonourable task of slaughtering raiders, a task he considers shameful but endures because he thinks his honour and reputation so tarnished that he might as well do this shameful thing as long as it helps with the war effort. But he is so depressed and miserable. And then Tharkay stops by and asks Laurence what he is doing and Laurence breaks down. And just this one conversation moves him, and he stops doing what he was ordered to do, and starts prioritising his conscience.
