My Inspiration - Pete Docter
Pete Docter was the director of Inside Out. He was inspired to make the story based on his daughter and her struggles as a pre-teen. As we grow up, we change from being happy and energetic children to more reserved teenagers. For those who haven't seen Inside Out, if you haven't stop reading and go watch it, the main emotions are joy, sadness, anger, disgust, and fear. By consulting psychologists Docter was able to create these characters and have a more grounded story.
Docter was able to give these characters personality. Not just with behavior but also artistic style. He envisioned the characters as shapes to get the feel of the emotions before knowing what they would look like. I really like this approach because character creation can be difficult especially with such complex themes.
