I really enjoyed Darker than Black when it was released and I’ve seen it several times since then. One thing that really drew me into the series was Hei, who is someone I overall strongly relate to. I think it’s difficult to find main protagonists like him and depicted in such a way. Don’t get me wrong, as there are plenty of “emo” or “glum” anime anti-heroes out there, but I think what really made Hei relatable was how much thought was actually put into his character as his writing is really consistent throughout the story, and his backstory is something I can strongly relate to. I also think that was the series’ strength. 

Unfortunately in comparison, the main story wasn’t executed as well at all, and I would argue that a big part of the reason why was that Darker than Black was honestly never the kind of story that wanted to move outside being a slice of life - it’s power is in its ability to depict how people came to be who they are today, not this whole stuff about prophecies and government conspiracies. That never made much sense and I think that’s why the second season so utterly failed to capture and keep building on the essence that made the first season so enjoyable. Not without its faults, but enjoyable.
