Si Pepe, o mas kilala sa tawag na Jose Rizal, ay ipinanganak sa Calamba, Laguna noong Hunyo 19, 1861. Siya ang pampitong anak nina Don Francisco Mercado Rizal at Donya Teodora Alonzo y Realonda. Ang pamilya ni Jose Rizal ay nabibilang sa pamilyang Principalia. Bagamat maykayang angkan ang pamilya niya, siya ay itinuring pa rin na indio ng mga Kastila.

Ang buhay ni Jose Rizal ay sadyang nakakamangha kung ito ay ikukumpara sa normal na buhay ng mga kabataan ngayon. Siya ay maituturing na isang henyong bata sapagkat marami siyang napatunayan hindi lamang sa larangan ng akademiko kundi maging sa iba’t ibang aspeto ng pamumuhay ng tao noong siya ay nabubuhay pa.
