Skip Google for Research
As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse. It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search termsÂ
As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable. As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.
Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.
â
Google is so powerful that it âhidesâ other search systems from us. We just donât know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.
www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.
www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free

fucked up how colors look different depending on what screen youâre looking at them on. that should be illegal I think
this fucking shit, you know
I spend so much time carefully picking and adjusting the colors in every single drawing I make that Iâd probably lose my mind if I didnât just repeatedly push this out of my memory and pretend itâs not a thing. Why am I reblogging a blank empty post that doesnât say anything??? Weird
good news! you canât make sure that everyone will see the correct colors on their own device, but you can make sure your monitor is as accurate as possible for printing and sharing by calibrating it!Â
there are a bunch of free monitor tests, but hereâs an easy one you can use. the passmark and eizo tests are also pretty good, though passmark doesnât work in your browser. be warned that some tests may cause eye strain.
you can either use the settings built into your monitor itself or use the display color calibration settings in your operating system to adjust the settings until everything looks correct, and then enjoy your accurate colors.
REBLOG TO SAVE A LIFE
Photographers, too. Color calibrate your monitors if you intend to print or sell your work. Thereâs a ton of info out there for this.

So I just started my short story writing class! These are dialogue tips
reference later
These are good tips.
Notice they are not labeled ârules.â For instance, I would have to take issue with #3 if it was a ârule.â There are times, especially in media like film or podcast, where dialogue is the best way to slip a morsel of exposition in and still feel authentic. Instead of a paragraph long explanation of something, sometimes a character may just ask âWhy?â and another answer âBecause reasons.â Voila, a little exposition in an easy to swallow capsule. Just donât do it often.
Likewise, #5 sounds too strict until you get to #6. There is a definite time and a place for adverbs and modifiers, but 5 & 6 are there to help you balance show vs tell. âSaidâ tells us a character spoke. âUsing an actionâ shows us how that character felt while speaking. Both are necessary. Adverbs and modifiers are the quickest shortcut between the two, but in a good narrative readers donât want shortcuts we want immersion and character building. So keep your shortcuts handy, but donât cut corners on storytelling.
