Dress
Junya Watanabe for Comme des Garçons
Autumn/Winer 2000
A large, wavering ruff collar on a simple sleeveless dress in glossy, napped fabric makes a strong impression. When put on, the collar grows into a massive volume as the folds around the neck ruff up, as if a flower were blooming. Ultra-thin lightweight polyester is heat-cut and the pieces sewn together in multiple layers to create a honeycomb structure. Junya Watanabe conducts exhaustive research into new Japanese materials, and teases new forms out of the high quality synthetic fabrics that have been produced by state-of-the-art techniques. This look was inspired by wild birds surviving the winter by staying warm with airy lightweight down.
