Self-taught cartography
Some people think there is going to be a map that shows where they are, all the different places they can go, and what it will take to get from here to there. And that might happen sometimes.
What’s more common is you don’t even know where you are on the map, so you don’t know which direction to go, and you don’t know what you’ll run into.
I spent a lot of time just not knowing what I was doing or where I was going. Then I remembered where I wanted to go when I was younger, and saw that it was possible. It wasn’t on any map though. I have some stars to guide me, and I have had to develop my own navigation skills.
The stars can act as a compass, but they won’t show you the way through the woods.
Breaking away from the metaphor to talk about my own experiences: some of the earliest interests I had as a teenager were psychology, philosophy, religion, and drugs. My goal really was to be a cult leader. My favorite music genre, goa trance, attracted a lot of people with similar interests to each other. I met people who talked about interesting scientific ideas. The artists frequently made reference to elements of Hinduism, which at first I assumed was because of its origin in Goa, India.
Then I did a bunch of drugs, and started to put lots of pieces together. [Side note: I did an irresponsible amount of drugs, and do not recommend anyone copy my methods. That is a story for another time.]
Now I am reading a lot more about Indian philosophy, and I can see there is a state of consciousness I can achieve that is like some of the best LSD experiences. The catch is that I have to stop using drugs to get there.
I recently got a semicolon tattoo. Part of my initial idea for the design was to show that I have had a lot of suicidal thoughts in my life. I probably will again in the future too. Naturally, other meanings have grown out from it, like they have with my other tattoos. It also represents the cycles of destructive patterns that frequently lead back to suicidal ideation, and how I am breaking free from those cycles. It also represents the connection I have to the other stories in the world. I am part of a story that goes back millions of years, to the first hominids. That same story will continue after my death. I am here to enrich the story as best as I can.
I am the steward of a great mystery
What gives my life purpose right now is to share that mystery with other people.
