Fi vs Fe

I made a list ages ago on what I saw to be differences between Fi and Fe, but I never shared it because I wanted to see if I would agree with myself later. I found it again and took out a few things and added a few details and better explanations (I hope), and decided to post it. Please, keep in mind that I’m not Fe and that the Fe descriptions are based on what Fe-users have said or what I have notice about them.

More likely to look inward and need inner reflection to know personal feelings: Introverted functions tend to be more abstract and, – surprise, surprise, – “inward facing” so that it may be difficult to explain or describe those introverted functions to others. It can be difficult for Fi-users to describe their feelings in words and often act on those emotions instead (this can range from sulking to great attempts to make changes in the world). Words alone may not seem enough to an Fi when they try to describe their feelings: They can seem too shallow or to somehow fall short, which can be very frustrating for the Fi-user (or those that are trying to understand the Fi-user’s feelings). Probably because of this, many Fi-users can feel uncomfortable sharing their feelings with others, even if they want to.

Generally, feels that following the heart and internal moral compass will lead in the right direction. Generally, looks inward for moral guidance and rules, more likely to act on what is felt to be right, and may have a difficult time acting on anything that isn’t felt to be right. Even if an action seems like the only right action, many Fi-users (perhaps feelers in particular) will have a difficult time doing that thing regardless, unless they feel that it’s right within themselves.

More likely to feel others are better as individual selves and often encourages diversity (people should accept you as you are): Many Fi-users, perhaps especially feelers, are very concerned about authenticity and not only acting true to themselves, but also hoping to appear as themselves to others; if someone misunderstands the Fi-user or claims the Fi-user is something they’re not (whether good or bad),  the Fi-user can be very bothered by this. Fi-users tend to be, “I’d rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I’m not” sort of people. They also tend to feel this way about others and can become upset, annoyed, or down-right angry if others are inauthentic or pretend to be someone they’re not (with the intention of fooling people in real life: ie, they’re generally not bothered by acting in movies or plays). Because Fi-users tend to value authenticity, they have a tendency to be open and/or honest oftentimes, and generally expect others to do the same. Finding out someone hasn’t done so can be a great disappointment.

- Possible bad points:

May appear selfish, especially to Fe

May appear too harsh, especially to Fe

May appear unemotional or unconcerned about emotions, especially to Fe

May over estimate ability to recognise and understand own emotions and what may be needed

May be unaware of societal rules or agreed-upon ethical codes, or may even rebel against them regardless of logic

May be completely unaware of others’ emotions and unable to predict or understand them

May be unconcerned or unable to relate to others’ emotions, sometimes hurting others, unintentionally or intentionally to varying degrees (rude to immensely cruel)

More likely to look outward and to act outward to know personal feelings: Extroverted functions are more “outward facing” and interact with the world outside of the user’s mind, and the user of the extroverted function tends to want to share those things within the realm of that function. So, Fe-users tend to feel things in the moment and can act on those emotions, such as crying, even in public, which shows others and themselves how they are feeling. This isn’t always the case, of course: If an Fe feels that their feelings are not worth bothering people with or that their feelings are inappropriate, they may try to hide them. Fe-feelers tend to like to talk about their feelings and to ask about how others are feeling as well, often hoping to help them if they’re unhappy (this can be by listening, talking, or doing things if asked).

Generally, feels that following societal/group rules/morals will lead in the right direction. Generally, looks outward for moral guidance and societal rules; more likely to discuss what ought to be socially agreed upon to be right: Many people in the atheist-vs-theist sort of debates who talk about morality prominently tend to be Fe-users: Think Sam Harris who argues that science can help give us right or wrong answers to moral questions, – answers for everyone to follow, – or think of William Lane Craig who argues that, without religion and the Abrahamic god, we all won’t have any morals and, because of that, religion is true and the Abrahamic god is real.

More likely to feel others are better off conforming to the group and often encourages homogeneity (make changes and you’ll fit in with the group): Though Fe-users are oftentimes okay with people being different, they tend to feel it’s better when people conform to their group or to society so that everyone feels better and no one is left out. This also creates harmony in the group, which Fe-users (perhaps feelers especially) enjoy. Some Fe-users are more than happy to help others fit in. Because of this, Fe-users may lie or conceal information or emotions for the group to maintain social harmony and so as not to offend. On the other hand, there are also many Fe-users who feel very strongly about social harmony as a whole and that everyone should act a certain way or do certain things because they are the right things for everyone and it’s better in the long run, in which case they will offend others for this cause (even if they don’t like it now, they feel it’s better for everyone later on).

- Possible bad points:

May appear selfish, especially to Fi

May appear phony, especially to Fi

May appear overly emotional or too concerned with emotions, especially to Fi

May over estimate ability to read or understand others’ emotions and what they may need

May follow societal rules or agreed-upon ethical codes unquestioningly, regardless of logic

May be too aware of others’ emotions and unaware of or unable to distinguish own emotions

May limit the circle of feeling/empathy/understanding only to a select few, making it easy to be, at the least, rude, or, at the most, immensely cruel to those outside of the circle

A last note on Fi vs Fe:

Extroverted functions are more often obvious because they appear present in the outside world, whereas introverted functions can seem lacking due to their inward nature. Fe-users are more likely to talk about, share, enquire after, or concern themselves with emotions or morality. Fi-users are more likely to act on emotions or their view of morality without necessarily being able to accurately describe why they feel this way or act this way, because it’s an inward, self-concerned function. And, lastly, I find that introverted functions can be considered private or personal to many people, especially the feeling function, so people may act accordingly.

Ti: Placing too much value on my own and other peoples’ feelings and not enough on objectivity and rationality.

Ne: Not being very open to novelty or uncertainty.

Ni: Failing to plan for the future or to perceive what my senses can’t.

Se: Being uncomfortable with living in the moment or interacting with my physical environment.

Si: Being bored by constant routine and predictability.
