“My work for this show is a simple portrait of a homeless friend, Gilbert Kelly, who was murdered by a teenager with a gun last spring. It was Kelly’s death that inspired me to apply for the “Engaging Artists” residency and to try to figure out how I could prevent future violence towards unsheltered homeless. I drew Kelly’s portrait in 14k gold leaf on glass. I chose a precious metal for my medium both to symbolize his importance to me and to reflect each viewer in the image. It is a small memento for a friend.” Anne Peabody’s “For Kelly” will be on view this Saturday at Hot Wood Arts Center (481 Van Brunt St. #9b) in #RedHook Brooklyn as part of the Engaging Artists Group Exhibition. "The concept for “I am a Person” developed over a series of workshop discussions with resident participants, Grand Central Neighborhood Social Services staff and artist collaborator and Engaging Artists Resident Christina Sukhgian Houle. These individuals worked alongside a photographer to help create an image that they felt best represented them, and participated in interviews, sharing some of the most proud moments in their life. Excerpts from these interviews will be on view around the mural, allowing the photographs to speak the words of the people portrayed and reflect the great array of people who find themselves in unexpected circumstances."
#EngagingArtists Resident Flavia Berindoague is in an upcoming group exhibition, which will feature two works inspired by the residency program!
Our #EngagingArtist Resident Christina Sukhgian Houle created this "I am a Person" photo mural at Grand Central Neighborhood Social Services. Christina volunteered with the residents in the shelter and here is the result of their collaboration! Photographs of the opening by Anthony Heinz May.
Engaging Artists resident Flávia Berindoague taught an art class at The Bowery Mission Women’s Center as part of the program’s volunteering requirement. In this picture, students are working on a project that expresses specific things about their feelings, interests, personalities, mood, tastes, and beauty using collage, drawing, writing and painting. Here are the incredible images by the talented class!
More great photographs from #EngagingArtists Resident Anna Adler's volunteer classes at Common Ground's Domenech residence!
