Paper and ink
A typical horror setting
The process of completing this work in Tumblr allows me to explore the possibilities of using a new media form that is beneficial in life. Using Tumblr as a way to present my ideas and work is much different than the old school paper and ink. Since I have a Tumblr account myself, knowing how to work it and using the different functions is not challenging. The perk of knowing how to work Tumblr can save a lot of time compared to paper and ink. To be honest, paper and ink takes quite some time for me because with these type of projects I tend to make all my work presentable such as going creative and using scrapbooking techniques. Tumblr has now saved me a lot of my time because I can easily find pictures on Tumblr by searching on the search engine and clicking reblog to post on my Tumblr page. I can also incorporate video links to present ideas.
Information and ideas are still communicated fully on Tumblr compared to paper and ink. I am still using Microsoft Work to write all my work in order to retain my information and edit drafts which are then pasted into a Tumblr post. Even though I am using a media form to communicate my ideas, all the information needed to come out still comes out. I can write the information and add pictures along just as if I would when writing a typed document. You can now visual all elements to the project by a click rather than shuffling through all the typed papers to look for one thing.
Using Tumblr to complete the work is more convenient and accessible. Since it is internet-based, wherever I have access to the internet I can easily work on this project. Once I’ve posted my work, I can easily edit and delete it whereas with paper and ink I will have to start all over or whiteout. Tumblr ensures organization and efficiency. Using Tumblr also enables me to not having to worry about losing all my work. Someone who is not familiar with using the new media forms may think using Tumblr as a disadvantage due to the amount of time they spend figuring out how to use it. Since Tumblr involves the use of electronic devices (laptop, computer, phones) the device could perhaps crash and all of the work could vanish.
Tumblr has shaped the content and meaning of my work in many ways. Some of these ways are presenting the information in a neat and organized fashion, more presentable to audiences, and easily getting my idea across. I can easily make my Tumblr look good and presentable by using visuals, colours, and designs. The incorporation of pictures and videos help me the get meaning out.
Several ideological discourses are concerning in this movie. Genders for say, the females are not weak like typical females would be portrayed. Killing people are thought to be male actions, the fact that female in the women are the killers show the opposition of the view of life. However, when the two are thinking about the future, tears and anger show which shows the truth how females act. Thelma was able to pull herself together, but Louise was crying when she found out that all her money was stolen.
Thelma and Louise demonstrate the hypodermic needle model. The audiences are passively receiving the information although the main characters have broken the truth. Since the main characters are the one who have committed the murder, the audiences will easily forget that this has happen as there is no attempt to challenge their acts. The audiences have fallen into their acts because the audience who are watching are heterogeneous, which are easily manipulated.
This movie does not represent the idea of reality. The fact that Thelma and Louise can use a gun to accurate shoot and kill the rapist and the man driving the truck is quite bizarre and unreasonable. When Louise asks Thelma where she got the gun from, she replies by saying it was just in the drawer. It is not reasonable for one to know how to hold and shoot a gun to kill someone on the very first try, which was demonstrated by Thelma and Louise.
The genre of the movie varies from crime, violence, romance, drama, thriller and adventure. The tight vulnerable friendship between Thelma and Louise does exactly portray in this Western/Crime movie. In the beginning of the movie, the two best friends are very classy and fashionable which does not represent the ideal Western movie where most settings are dusty brown roads and western music playing in the backgrounds.
The film Thelma and Louise do not necessary tell the “downright truth” of how problems are handled. The entire movie is about how two powerful women runaway from different crimes the two have convicted. This already breaks the “downright truth” about this movie. If the movie is to be portrayed as downright truth, Thelma and Louise would have surrendered to the police once Louise killed the rapist in the beginning of the movie. On the other hand, the downright truth is expressed near the end of the movie when Louise demands to talk to police.
“The first movie I’ve ever seen which told the downright truth.”
Horror
Characters:
Main protagonist (victim/hero), the villain (monster), the stupid or immortal teenagers that always get killed, creepy children, police officers, ghosts, psychopaths, zombies, cheerleaders
Settings:
Small communities, isolated places, urban environments, dark alleyways, anything connotes isolation or being alone, abandoned houses/hotels/asylums, lakes, countryside, gloomy underground tunnels, graveyard, basement, attics
Plots:
A typical horror plot consists of a family who move into a haunted house. Then there is a villain who “lives” in the house and creeps around and kills the family members one at a time. The male of the family usually go on the mission to find out the history of the haunted house which results in him to get killed. The “pure” ones usually survive in the end while and slutty and obnoxious ones gets killed. Romance relationships usually get killed in the end and the son or daughter of the family does. The horror film usually ends with the problem solved or no ending at all.
Themes:
“Revenge”
“Good versus Evil”
“Supernatural”
“Insanity”
“Suicide”
“Curiosity”
“Lust”
Value Assumptions/Ideologies:
One ideology value is for punishing people for their curiosity. When characters go investigate about values that the villain does not want anyone to find out, the characters punishments are usually death. Another ideology value that pure will redeem safe. The characters who are incident and hold nothing against the villain or another to do the problems usually survives.
Trailer
The trailer for The Conduring illustrates these genre conventions perfectly. In the trailer, the family moves into a mansion in an isolated neighborhood and is constantly by a spirit. All the settings hit the genre conventions which include the dark basement, mirrors and closets. The spirit in the trailer was always making objects move like the moving closet doors, the bedroom doors, closing the basement door and making pictures fall. The ideology value of punishing curiosity applied since the mother was the one who started figuring out the spirit in the closet. From there she was constantly being followed and played by the spirit. As said in the trailer, the spirit is trapped within the family.
