Earthen cabin in Småland, Sweden.
Known as “backstugas,” these cabins were common in the forests from the 1600s until the late 1800s. The structures were often built by on the border between two properties, generally on land that could not be farmed. It was not uncommon for the inhabitants to work for the landowners.
This particular cabin, which features three stone walls and one wooden wall, was built in the early 1800s by “Little Jon.”
Contributed by Christoffer Castor.
