[startled by the sound and then a sharp intake of breath as giant roots come from the underground] Oh my god what is that?!
keeping busy (sybate&angela)
Once more, he was flabbergasted. This time at the fondness of humans to name themselves other things, or shorten their names. It was bad enough to address a person by their first name in his books, but nicknames were most definitely pushing it. Yet Sybate knew he was in the minority, and was doing his best to act as others did while still maintaining the majority of his customs.
"The best," He echoed. "Indeed, Ms. Martine, that is quite true." He had yet to meet a person aboard who was an exceptional person, even if he did not neccisarlily like some members, he couldn’t say they were not fantastic at what they did. But that was to be expected. The first mission of this caliber could only be completed through an exceptional crew.
Sybate smiled at her hospitality, dipping his head in a small manner of thanks. ‘I will hold you to that in five years, ma’am.” He doubted he would through such a long expanse of time, but who knew. Sybate had not come aboard knowing anyone, yet had spoken with more generous and open people than he had in is life before. It seemed he would make friends eventually, even if it took the expanse of the entire trip. “I shall have to take a further look into your claim of the hot chocolate.”
"Actually, I was on my way to find what I have just found." The man scowled at himself, knowing from a few other encounters his phrases were often skewed and did not make much sense. But he had learned how to speak through the sparse material found in his master’s libraries when he had a chance, and found himself mimicking the archaic language as it was more natural to him. "I was looking for a person with no duties to have a conversation with, one can only sit around for so long. Are you otherwise preoccupied?"
She laughed lightly. It was... a strange idea that she wasn't going to be seeing SanFran for five years. It wasn't unusual-well it was, since it would be the first trip of this length-and Angela wasn't homesick. It just seemed like, within a blink of an eye that she'd be back. "At five years end it is! It'll give me plenty of time to compile a list of must-go-tos then!" Her mother's homemade things were on the mental list immediately-her hometown wasn't far from SanFran anyways, maybe that small seafood place-did he like seafood? It could be an acquired taste, and--right. She'll have to find a place to write this down to remember. God, times like this made having a working PADD so much better.
Angela tilted her head to the side slightly at Sybate's wording and nodded, comprehending when he rephrased. She shook her head with a sheepish grin. "No, none at all. In fact, I was leaving my hut to find something to do as well!" She sighed deeply, the cold air filling her lungs made her shiver suddenly. "I don't think I could stay there by myself for any longer or I was going to drive myself insane! Honestly, I missed the snow, but not necessarily the snow and ice and cold... I wish something would happen, but nothing terrible...." She shrugged. "Knock on wood and all that."
Angela wasn't really superstitious, but small sayings like that were so common from home. "We could go look for some hot chocolate? I have some rations in my pockets that I was going to trade anyways. Or maybe some kind souls will take pity and gives us a cup for free," She grinned. "And then we can just talk! Become life long friends even! It'll be exciting!" Angie giggled. Meeting new people was exciting and hopefully by the end of this five year trip, she'll have met the majority of the crew. It was one of the reasons she had been persuaded to join Starfleet-all the people, new cultures, working side by side. Back home, she'd probably be stuck with the same neighborhood kids she'd grown up with.
keeping busy (sybate&angela)
The woman seemed more than chipper, even with the circumstances surrounding them, and he couldn’t help but feel some of her happiness wash onto his own person. What was it that the Miss Evans had stated? That smiles and emotions spread through people. Her reasoning seemed to be true.
Sybate crinkled his nose as she took it as a compliment. He was merely stating the facts, but he supposed it would do no harm for her to take it as she did.
He glanced down at her for a brief moment before reaching out to grasp it, shaking hers gingerly. No matter how many years he had been around Earth and human’s customs, he could not get over the fact that they greeted everyone equally, even before asking a person’s name of heritage. They didn’t seem to care who or what you were, and after a childhood of being treated as sub-par, this small action gave him more evidence that the way his planet worked was wrong. “A pleasure, Miss Angie.”
"My name is Sybate Hicks, tactical officer." Once he dropped their hands, he placed his hands on the small of his back and dipped at his waist. "May I inquire your last name if it’s not too much trouble?"
"Phaser team, how very interesting. It seems the majority of the females on this ship are women of action." At her comment, he shrugged, glancing around their surroundings as if he had forgotten where exactly they were. "No, at the moment the circumstances are not too bad. Though I believe it to be impossible, the food here tastes less real than that from the replicators on the ship."
His handshake was light, maybe it was a politeness thing. Or being cold. She was used to firm handshakes and loosened her grip to match his. 'Tactical Officer! He does what I do-pretty much!' She grinned but that turned into an all teeth smile regardless of the cold. She wouldn't say it outloud, but his manners were adorable. Angela couldn't imagine being on such niceties, especially in their current circumstances. She'd be prepared for a grumble or a shove when she'd run into someone.
She shook her head to say that it wasn't any trouble. "It's Martine. Angela Martine. But as I introduced myself earlier, Angie is certainly fine." He seemed so reserved, like everything she said required some reflection. Well, some people were like that. Angela certainly wasn't-much to her parents chagrin. Although she'd gotten better, sometimes she did end up with her foot in her mouth.
"Well, this ship only takes the best, so," she laughed. "Although, since you're here as well, I'm sure you more than capable." It was nice to have an open minded crew and captain. Angie did know a few ships that, while they weren't strictly sexist, had rumors that gender was definitely used as a bias. She was more than happy here now-even with the ice and snow.
"Honestly, replicated food tastes nothing compared to some true blue SanFran cuisine. Next time we're on shore leave back home, I'll take you for some of my favorites," she offered. "But until then, I've heard the hot chocolate tastes exquisite. It might be the cold weather helping out, though. But I should ask, were you on your way to something? I don't want to keep you!"
And what do they give?
Angela didn't mean to kill anyone. Perhaps, three heartbeats ago, the idea of taking another life away felt... dangerous. Horrid. Inhuman. But she was so tired of hearing empty words.
'There was nothing we could've done.' 'We had been separated.' 'I'm so sorry for your loss, Angie.'
She wants them to just shut up. Valeris, Piper, Sulu. It was their fault. She had dozens of 'what ifs' go through her head, questions she would never have answers to because she hadn't been there. Had they really tried to help M'Tau? Did they give up because it had been simply a 'lost cause'? Was it 'illogical' to try and save him? Did they think their lives were not worth risking for his? It was their fault.
It takes planning-a lot of it. Part of her wants to be reckless since she really has nothing to lose. However, it's not too hard, to plan it all. The nice thing about being stuck on this planet was accidents do happen. Unfortunate accidents. But they say, it's simply to even the scales. Justice must be served. Give and take. Balance must be restored.
from 21-39 all odds
21 - Is there someone who cares about you? Well, I'm sure you know, M'Tau. It's a nice feeling, to know that you're being thought of. Especially when you are returning the thought!
23 - You are going to die tomorrow, what will you do? I... I guess, I would be selfish, and spend it to the fullest with M'Tau, send last minute messages to my mother, and I... I would want to fall asleep next to M'Tau. God, it's so selfish! B-but I would want his warmth, next to me, before I passed. Something about having him with me, doesn't make death so frightening.
25 - Do you keep a diary? I used to, but it became more of a chore. But if I do need to record my thoughts, my PADD is more than sufficient.
27 - Would you be willing to sacrifice yourself for others? I... The moral part of me says yes. That if it was within my power to help someone with my life, I would do it. But also, every life as a weight and I cannot be so selfish to also think that my absence will not be heavy on some hearts. At the end of the day, I think... I would. Who am I to say my life is more important than another's?
29 - Relationship with parents. It is very good! While my father's passing was hard for my mother, as well as myself, we were and are still very close. My mother enjoys gardening and sometimes I do try to find small plants that will survive in Earth's atmosphere for her. I send her many messages when I am on shore leave and spend time with her when I can. My family is very, very dear to me.
31 - Do you like animals? Oh dear, I love animals. My father had two cats while I was growing up. I loved reading up extinct species, making my mother sew me dozens of stuffed animals. If I had the time and memory (and permission), I would definitely have pets on board!
33 - Do you mind wearing a uniform? Not at all!
35 - Three dear possessions. My synthesizer, Robert's engagement ring, my mother's (and now my own) engagement ring.
37 - What would you be doing if you weren't in Starfleet? I would probably be trying to make a music career! I love playing piano and singing and music is just... a very beautiful art. If my passion hadn't been in the stars, it would've been in the notes, for sure!
39 - A person onboard you'd like to get to know better. I had a few chats with Clara and Christine, who both seemed to like music and were lovely people. I also would like to get to know more of M'Tau's friends! My foremost goal is to be better friends with Joanna, however, who seems to have some sort of grudge against me...?
M'Tau freezes to death.
She hates how bitter life can be. It must be some cruel sadistic joke, to keep giving and taking her happiness away. She hates hearing the pity and sympathy from everyone. She hates this place. She hates the Captain for taking everyone here in the first place. She hates whoever finalized the assignments for patrols. Her anger is dark, black and bubbling, finding some way to escape.
Because this is honestly the last time she will just stand by and let fate do what it likes. No, she wants retribution. If there's give and take, someone else must give since so much has been taken from her. Her heart needs it, to feel at peace.
keeping busy (sybate&angela)
It was obvious that everyone was restless, with small amounts of hopelessness sinking into some of the younger or more paranoid crew members. Sybate was barely phased. It had been less than three days now, rations would last them another week and a half, or more if they tried hard enough, and engineers were returning to the ship. Actions were being taken and small steps of progress were being made. Despair would only sink into his thinking when all options were exhausted, and with the crew and leaders they had, the man doubted it would ever come to that.
Still, he could not quite rid himself of the boredom that racked his brain. There was only so much one could do on an ice planet, and he felt like some form of addict as he took off the edge with small conversations, but was always left craving more. This large amount of free time was a good opportunity to get to know people, though he really wished for another alternative.
Whilst walking aimlessly around their settlement in search of entertainment, it seemed in his luck that a source of conversation came to him first.
Sybate stumbled sideways a few steps as the woman bumped into him, glancing at her with slight bewilderment. It was an accident, yes, but it still took him off guard. “No need to apologize, ma’am. I am certain you had no intention of purposely running into me. I’m quite alright, I mean no offense, but you are rather slim, I doubt a small collision could have caused me much harm.”
The cold nipped at her cheeks as soon as she became aware of her surroundings. What was it with her and walking into things?
Angela couldn't help but feel the quirk of her lips. He spoke... so eloquently? Was that the word she was looking for? She smiled, as she always did. "Oh, you're fine-and I'll take that as a compliment then," she giggled. He sounded so analytical and being surrounded by casual conversation so often, it was refreshing.
He was tall-then again, who wasn't tall next to Angie-and had shockingly bright eyes against the icy backdrop. His polite manner and the way he held himself made her guess he was probably someone who was on the Bridge, or maybe Engineering? Either way, maybe he was someone who could answer her questions about the ship or-'He could just know just as little as you do, you know!' Right, she shouldn't get ahead of herself. She stuck out her gloved hand. "I'm Angie, from Phaser Control. Nice to you meet you, Mr...?"
She had been asking for something to do. Making small talk and meeting new people wasn't a bad option. "It's not too bad out here, no?" She said as a joke. When struggling with small talk, weather was always an option. 'Perhaps a poor choice of topic in retrospect, Angela. You're all stuck in a frozen deathtrap.' She mentally grimaced at her tactlessness.
I’m tired of making snowmen and snow angels. When can we go back to the ship? This isn’t fun anymore.
I know when I was little, my favorite thing to do when there was snow was have a snowball fight. [smiles] We could have one right now!
Those kinds of things are more fun when you can do them with someone else, I think.
keeping busy (open)
Angela was an excellent busybody. She had kept herself preoccupied for a few years, so she considered herself a pro. Unfortunately, with all the miserable ice and snow and prolonged death sentence, it seemed like everyone needed something to do-which left Angela is nothing to do.
The hut was fairly cozy with people in it-if not a little squished. But being there alone made it seem like there was enough room for a crowd. It had only been a few hours but she was getting cabin fever. Wasn't there anything she could do? Throwing on another coat, she stepped outside to try to find something to occupy her time. Instead, she walked straight into someone. "Oh gosh, I'm sorry-so sorry!" The apology flew out of her lips. "Are you alright?"
[She hated just walking around with nothing to do...] Anyone need an extra pair of hands? I can do work, honest!
"Hey, hey," M’Tau held her close, his back arching because he had to lean down but he didn’t mind that, at all, much less now that she was finally there with him. Finally there. "I don’t know that either. Don’t want to think about that," he had lost too much already. If he had lost this woman, who brought all his world to a sudden turn and showed him new things, new sensations and emotions, who made it all better, then what the fuck would have he done?
No. No thinking about it at all. He looked down at her, and with a thumb, grazed her cheek, pressed their noses together. Don’t cry. Don’t be sad. “I got stuck in Engineering. Apparently some fucking malfunctions or something. Dunno.”
A low purr was at the back of his throat. When he spoke, his accent was heavy, voice soft and quiet. “Love you.”
God help the next time she faced an Engineer. There was a silent anger that formed in the back of her mind. It was, perhaps, unfair, but the prospect that she had come so realistically close to losing him. Hell hath no fury like a woman, well, frightened half the death.
She closed her eyes and let out a relieved sigh. Angela hadn’t even realized she’d been so tense for so long and the comfort was welcomed. It didn’t matter that they were on some snow planet, that the Enterprise was in orbit above them-broken. No. Angela didn’t feel so lost now that she was by M’Tau.
She laughed, her breath coming out like fog, the adrenaline and joy overshadowing any worry. Her heart pulled tightly at his words. "I love you too," she murmured, tilting her head up and pulling his closer to kiss.
"I feel like I’ve lost ten years on my life in the past five hours. That was miserable.” she grinned. “But you’re alright? You don’t need to go by the Medical hut? I don’t know about you... but it never got this cold in California…” She rubbed her arms to keep warm, but honestly everything was going to be okay, right? Right.
Angela has fallen deeply in love with M'Tau and that relationship has shown a rather interesting battle between herself and Joanna. In her spare time, she sing and plays with Clara and has become fast friends with Krista.
An hour, at least. M’Tau had been looking for Angela for about an hour, could have been less but it felt like more with each step he took. Thing was, he was annoyed by so much snow, as he had to occasonally stop and shake it off, by the people whining about the cold and he had even seen the Captain brooding around, by the lack of the two people he cared about the most. For the first time in his life, he did not like being alone.
It wasn’t until he stepped into a hut and saw a familiar small figure, dark hair, eyes bright and gorgeous. Yep, that was her. And she was alive, and well, and despite everyone telling him that oh yeah I’ve seen her or who’s Angela? don’t worry I’m sure she’s fine he wasn’t able to believe that she had left the ship until that moment. He was only a few steps away. Could almost reach out and touch her.
Which he did. With long strides, he went to her, and quickly cupped her face between his large hands before embracing her tightly. Suddenly he could breathe.
She let a surprised gasp escape from her mouth and the recognition of his warmth and his smell and his just everything brought tears to her eyes. What had been only a few hours or so felt like it had been weeks. She buried her face into his chest. The wave of relief that came over her was so blissful. Angela had been so worried and no words of comfort had helped her. Instead, she had tried to shield herself for the worst. 'Only a few hours…' It sounded ridiculous in her head. How could she have built so much in just a few hours? 'Because you love him, your dork!' She smiled at the truth.
It didn’t stop the tumble of words that fell from her mouth as she pulled away only so slightly to look up at him. “I was so worried and I didn’t know if you’d gotten off the ship and some people had seen you and some hadn’t but I saw some of the Engineers so I wasn’t sure and I wouldn’t set up a place until I’d found you and my PADD isn’t working and the last I heard from you was you telling me to just go and I knew I couldn’t but everyone-they just all had to evacuate and-” She fell breathless, clouds rising from her mouth. She hugged him as tight as she could. ”I’m so happy you’re here,” she said as she smiled. “I don’t know what I would’ve done.”
The truth that resounded in that last sentence scared her a little bit? When had this happened? How would she have coped? She pushed the thoughts away, glad that she could hold her loved one in her arms. She looked back up at him. "What happened on that ship?"
Imagine finding out that M'Tau didn't make it off the ship.
"It’s no bother, at all." Ahikar smiled, pushing his hands into his coat pockets as he shivered again. Clara wouldn’t be happy, that was true. She wanted him inside the huts at all times, keeping warm, but they both knew that wasn’t going to happen anyway. "But, like I said, I’m sure he’s fine."
"Just promise me that you’ll keep yourself safe long enough to be reunited with him, alright?"
She took his words to heart. "Thank you again, so much. It really..." She searched for a way to explain her gratitude. "Goes a long way. If you ever need help with anything, anything at all, just contact phaser control. I'm Angela." She smiled.
"I'll repeat the same back to you, Mr. Tumek. Thank you."
Ahikar bit his lip, watching Angela’s emotions take her over. Suddenly, he felt bad for even speaking up. He paused a moment, deciding upon whether or not it would be inappropriate to hug her, but figured it couldn’t hurt. In an attempt to comfort her, he loosely wrapped one arm around her back, patting it softly. “I know what you mean..” He mumbled, pulling back quickly, ensuring not to linger too long. “I could..go try to find him if it would make you feel better.” He offered, before revealing himself. “Tumek. Ahikar Tumek.”
She stiffed at the contact first and then let herself relax. The ache in her chest kept hurting and she wanted to cry. God she was worried out of her mind. Angela sighed at the loss of the contact.
"That would be... If it isn't too much to ask, if you just even see him, and tell him I'm looking, that would be more than enough, Mr. Tumek. Thank you." He was ship personnel with his own jobs. She couldn't send him on her personal scavenger hunt. She smiled. It was nice to have kind people like him.
