It’ll be even more of a coincidence if they are the same person, but I don’t think they are. You don’t happen to know a retired Starfleet Officer called Anja Beilschmidt, would you?

My Anja is my daughter, so no they're definitely not the same person. My Anja also isn't allowed to date anyone until she's 25 so it better not be. [Tobias winks and smiles.] I dont think I do, what did she do in starfleet?

People started biting… each other. Just like the zombies in the old stories.

There were horrific fatalities. Security was stretched thin trying to stop people from eating each other and they couldn’t save everyone. Just reading about it was terrible, I cant imagine what the rest of the ship is still going through because of that. Everyone knew someone who was bitten.

[Tonia listened to his story, at this point completely engrossed in the details. She took a bite of her apple, almost done with her lunch. After swallowing she replied, interested in how he came across this information.]

How did something get so out of hand? I had no idea. How do you know so much?

I am not a biochemist I couldn't even begin to tell you how it worked exactly. But on a ship this big with so many... stubborn people unwilling to admit they don't feel well, this sort of thing can spread fast before anyone notices something isn't quite right.

[ Tobias looked off to the side vaguely for a moment before he shook his head and refocused on Tonia.] I'm an adviser of sorts, here because starfleet thinks the ship needs me. I was just looking into some past incidents so I can be familiar with  problems we might have on the ship.

[ He smiled slightly at her trying to diffuse a bit of his own gloom.] Its a long mission Id prefer to not step on peoples toes.

Oh please do. [ Tobias handed the opened box to Riley.]

Did you happen to get a pack of hand written letters? Or hear anything about someone else getting them?

[He lifted the snow globe out carefully - and a small card at the bottom of the box. ‘Love, Anja.’ the card said cheerfully in her neat script. Kevin smiled briefly at the card, before turning to Tobias.]

I’m afraid not. But thank you for returning this package to me - it’s from a very dear person. I’ll keep an ear out for your letters.

[He immediately turned around at the mention of ‘snow globe’.]

That’ll be me - I’m expecting a snow globe. Could I please have a look at the parcel?

Hmm what is this? [Toby took the snow globe out of its case carefully and gave it a small shake.]

I don't think Anja would send me something like this but then whose is it...? [ He fit it back in its box as well as he could and brought it to the messhall. Everyone went in there at some time or another and if he asked around others could carry the message for him anyways.]  Was anyone expecting a snow globe in their mail? or did someone get a batch of letters?

[Tonias eyes widened a bit. Had a situation so out of hand really happened? Either way this man’s voice and tone told the story well and she enjoyed listening. ] 

No kidding? What happened? I mean obviously they aren’t around anymore.

[He put his fork down and folded his hands underneath his chin.] Have you ever heard of an old monster called a Zombie?

[Tonia couldn’t help but keep smiling. Though he seemed to regret all the knowledge he had, she, young and naive, grew excited by it. She could tell he had stories to tell and she loved to listen to anything of the sort. Her eyes couldn’t help but light up at the mention of -Zombies-. Where had she heard that word? A fairy tail she had heard long ago as a kid. No, more of a legend from the past. A horrid legend. Yes, now she remembered a bit.]

Yes, I think I have. They were monsters said to be people… dead people…ugly and decaying. Feared monsters from the past.  Or so I vaguely recall reading. Why?

There was a virus introduced to the enterprise a few months back. A cure was found for it but not before some... things happened.

Those who contracted it began showing horrifying symptoms after a small period. It started with cold like symptoms, coughing and sneezing, then moved on to an intense fever. After the fever, they got, well, the best way to say it is aggressively hungry. [ Toby looked down at his plate and pushed it away after a moments consideration.]  To the point where they couldn't control themselves.

Oh I like a bit of everything. I mean I will give most foods a try, I cant eat as many different foods as I did before. My body is a bit more picky these days.

Interesting… That’s such a vagu word. Care to elaborate? I’m new and would love to learn anything -interesting- about the ship. [Tonia smiled at the use of one of her favorite words. Interesting. Yes, this conversation may just be..] 

[She ate a bit of her meal, waiting for his response. ]

[Tonia had been searching for a place to sit. At this point she hadn’t met that many people on the Enterprise, and those she had appeared to be well… not here. She looked to the table on her left to see and older man surrounded by papers and food. Before she could turn to walk away he noticed her staring and mistook it for her asking for a seat. Tonia decided to go for it anyway and sat down on the other side of the table. Setting down her lunch and launching right into conversation]

Thanks. [She glances at the papers.] I hope I’m not disturbing your work… which is what? If you don’t mind me asking. [Tonia looks back at him who had gone back to eating.]

Oh its nothing really just catching up on some of the Enterprise's history since she left dock. Its been quite... [ He twirled his fork around in mid air as he tried to think of a proper word. She looked pretty fresh to the crew and the last thing he wanted to do was scare her. Space was already frightening without him adding his often gruesome 2 cents.]

Interesting. [ Technically he was reading evaluations which happened to have interesting things in them especially from the past few months. But he really was trying to keep his purpose a bit on the down low.]

Sorry i didn't mean to take up the whole table! [ He shifts his reports to the bench next to him.] Have a seat!

Oh, great! Thank you! [She grinned brightly, and did so, rattling off the letters without much thought.] Security officer.

Uhm…What sort of roster is this? You said you were…quite new, yeah?

[ Tobias tapped in the letters on his PADD as she spoke and looked away.] Im a new..... adviser for the command team. Well everyone really, I got here in - [ His PADD beeped at him softly letting him know the search was done. It was as bad as he thought. Deceased. His mouth worked silently for a moment and he handed her the PADD so she could see it for herself.] I am so sorry. [ He managed to say quietly.]

Uhm… [She counted silently in her head. How many days had it been? She shrugged gently, furrowing her eyebrows at the ceiling.] I’m really bad with time, I’m sorry….

It was back on planet, I know that. Before the whole…plant…incident.

[ Tobias frowned a little. Before the plant.That didn't sound good and the name sounded slightly familiar in a bad way.] Hmmm, well I happen to have a roster of sorts, I can look him up. How do you spell his name?

I’d like to ask something of him but…I haven’t really seen him around…. [Which really shouldn’t have surprised her much. They hadn’t ended on the best of terms, but she trusted his opinion wholly, and she really wanted to ask what he thought of these…traders on board.]

She decided her original plan was… useless, because of the accident. I never wanted to influence my daughter like that.

Oh. [He finds himself mirroring the awkward little shuffle his professor just made.] I’m—sorry to hear that, sir.

She'll be brilliant at it, no matter what she does really. [ Tobias shook his head.]

Nothing to b sad over and I don't mean to switch subjects but [ He looked around sickbay and frowned.] I did come down here for another reason. I mean I enjoy talking to you but where are all of the doctors?

[ Tobys face lighted up, If anything could sidetrack him, his family would be it.] Oh Wonderful! Anja just started in her new school. She wants to be a xeno-biologist ! Although since she doesn’t want to go into space I find it funny. She says she wants to focus more on microbiology and work in high traffic sectors where various alien cultures mingle. Something like that anyways. [ He smiled a little sadly.] She changed careers because of me.

[Jesús listened with great interest, his wide smile turning into a puzzled one soon enough.] She will do great, surely. I know. It sounds like something fun anyway. But, because of you, sir? I’m afraid I don’t really understand.
