“that’s a good idea, actually,” ezra said, pursing his lips as he considered enzio’s suggestion. his brother was often looking out for him like this and, though he wouldn’t admit it out loud, he suspected that he’d crash and burn if it weren’t for the watchful eye and care of the elder burke. “i might have to do that soon, maybe once i get through all of the clients i’ve already booked in,” he said, smiling despite the change in tone of the conversation, “you know, if you ever can’t sleep, or things aren’t going too well, you just have to call me and i’ll be over with popcorn and one of your nerdy movies right away.”

a feigned look of surprise on his face, Enzio cocked a dark brow. “I always have good ideas, mate.” Ezra was still so young, full of ideas and passion and it would break Enzio’s heart to see him burn himself to the ground at such a young age. And he did deserve some time off - a vacation or just a few weeks for himself. Being young. “Good, wouldn’t want you to go broke. You probably need some expensive shit for those luscious locks of yours.” a joke to lighten the situation again, smiling back at his younger brother. All soon to soften into an affectionate chuckle. “thank you. I really do appreciate that and surely will take you up on that offer. When you’ve got a few days off and I don’t rip you off your precious sleep. Nerdy movies. You uncultured swine.”

shaking his head and laughing along to enzio’s little outburst, ezra grabbed his sketchbook off of his desk and brought it over to the front counter. lately, most of his days were filled with work, both at the shop and from home. it meant that he was exhausted, physically and emotionally, and he guessed that it showed based on the way his brother was looking at him right now. “i’m okay, i’ve just been so busy with work and coming up with new designs,” he said as he flicked through his drawings, most of them rather small but some of them larger, more conceptual designs that often came to him in the early hours of the morning. “it’s been exhausting but i’m getting through it. how are you?” he asked sincerely.

Dark eyes followed the youngest Burke as he moved toward the front counter, concern hidden from Ezra’s view as he stood with his back facing Enzio. The job he had chosen - and loved - was a hard one, despite what some people might think or say. There was no such thing as having a bad day or being allowed to have an inspirational crisis. Once tattooed, the design was permanent and constantly being forced to get better and evolve could weight down on anyone’s mind. “Have you thought about a taking a break? Working yourself into the ground is not going to do you or your customers any good. You could even call it a creative break, spend your time coming up with new designs without the pressure, you know?” he offered, knowing fully well that Ezra would do what he thought to be the best anyway. “I’m fine. Really...you know, staying on track and focusing on the important things. Just a bit of trouble finding sleep these days - it’s the heat, though. And worrying about my little brother, probably..” the last part was added in jest to lighten the mood.

laughing as he placed his coffee mug back down onto the counter, ezra looked up at his older brother and couldn’t help but smile. this relationship they had was practically new – with all the enzio went through when he was a teenager, the two hadn’t had much time to bond, but he was glad that they were getting there, glad that the older boy seemed to be doing much better than he had been in the past. ezra was proud of all of his siblings, but enzio’s accomplishments and recovery set him just that little bit apart from the rest in his eyes. “meth and star trek are not even on the same level,” he said, grinning at his own joke.

of course, he remembered Ezra’s awkward emo phase, walking past a room blasting music that was practically indistinguishable as to what language the band was actually screaming. But a few holes in his memory had made it difficult to remember everything and build a functioning relationship in the past. Had they been close still? Of course, they were brothers. It had just been..different. And both had worked hard to catch up and bond over the past few years and that was something Enzio was extremely thankful for. Thankful for having someone as genuine and good in his life - properly. “Oh fuck off - be glad you already have your dirty phalanges all over your food, otherwise I’d take that away from you for disrespecting the entire human race like that.” He laughed, unfortunately sitting too far away from Ezra to give him a friendly kick in the shin just for good measure. Then, he went quiet for a second, head tilted ever so slightly to look at his younger brother. “How’s everything going, though? How are you doing?"

“hey, hey. no need to bring out the puberty phases, we all went through them,” ezra said before taking a sip of the hot coffee his older brother had brought in for him. he was thankful, truly, and needed this little pick-me-up before tattooing another client. joking around with enzio had always been one of his favourite things in the world – more than anything, he just loved being around his family. “and, plus, i’m not ashamed of my emo phase in the slightest,” ezra laughed.

everything was in good fun, a bit of lighthearted banter between brothers - something reminiscent of the good old days. He wouldn’t be a proper older brother without teasing the pup of the litter...in a loving way, of course. Enzio liked to check in with everyone, whether it was just to see they’re doing well, or as in this case, to drop off some food and coffee. Especially knowing Ezra could forget the entire world around him when he was focused on something his mind had come up with. “Don’t worry, I’m ashamed enough for both of us. ‘it’s not a phase Dad’. Well, it could’ve always been worse. Meth, for example. Meth would’ve been a lot worse. Or thinking Jar Jar Binks is anything but an abomination.”

rolling his eyes despite the smile on his face, ezra pulled himself away from his work, making his way over to the food and coffee calling his name. he needed fuel for the rest of the day, having spent most of his energy on obsessing over designs for his clients all morning. “people make modifications to their porsches when they think they could look better,” ezra said, laughing as he practically ripped open the bag of food his brother had so kindly brought him, “or when they’re starting to get old.”

Pulling out a chair, Enzio plopped down with an exaggerated sigh - surely, whoever had the 2PM appointment wouldn’t mind him lunging around. No one getting a Tattoo could be that stuck up. The elder cocked a brow, corner of his lip lifted as he rolled the coffee cup in his hands. “Wow, is that how you choose to treat me? I, the one who brought you coffee and food, looking after your well-being and instead of a ‘thank you oh gracious brother for looking after my adult ass’ all I get is insults.” Shaking his head, he leaned back into the chair to rest his elbows on the back. “Old. Tsk, you mean full of life experience. Old enough to remember your awkward pre-puberty phases.”

just as the brunette was about to run off and cower in embarrassment, he heard the male’s response and breathed an allayed sigh as it seemed he had taken the whole situation in his stride. an inviting smile soon appeared across his lips as he clutched his tray under his arms and began sparking a conversation with the other. it was undoubted that he was indeed a pretty face but eli needed to control his wandering eye in the workplace. ‘  well, thanks. i’m glad you like the food! surprisingly not, just thought i’d chuck it in and make someone a happy customer today,  ’ eli improvised, trying to come up with something to please him and hopefully make him return.

the quiet chuckle fell from Enzio’s lips as he picked the spoon up to dig into the food that had been placed in front of him. He really just thought of the boy as someone with better manners than others - and who doesn’t enjoy compliments? Or maybe Enzio was just really easy to impress. “Wow. Here I thought I was someone special. It’s fine, I get it.” The tip of his tongue collided with the roof of his mouth, clicking quietly as he looked up to smile at the other in an attempt to let him know he was just joking. “It’s a good mindset to have. You never know, a little generosity can make a shit day seem a little less dark.”

drawing and tattooing were the two things ezra loved most in the world. more often than not, you could find him at home or in the shop, hunched over in an awkward position, mind completely focused on creating the perfect piece his customer. as he waited for his afternoon appointment to arrive, he took his design out, adding last minute touches and modifications to it before they arrived. upon hearing the bell on top of the shops door ring, he looked up, bright and welcoming smile on his face. “hi there!” he beamed, “are you my 2 o’clock?”

although Enzio wasn’t exactly against the thought of getting a tattoo, he simply had never found something that interested him enough to actually get it. But he had the day off and, really, nothing else to do with his free time so annoying hard working people it was. With two cups of coffee and a brown bag in his hands, he replied the gesture of the other with a shrug of his shoulders and the items lifted up ever so slightly. “Nope. Me? Tattooed? C’mon, you wouldn’t put a sticker on a Porsche either. I got coffee and something to eat.”

with the bowl secured in his hand, eli ambled over to the table number that was printed on the order receipt and glanced down at it, reading out the orders one by one. as he began to place them onto the table, he took a glance down at the people sat at the table and paused for a moment. he was daydreaming, perhaps about the person at the table or perhaps at how delicious their order looked. when he came back to reality, he stumbled over his words slightly, ‘  uh, sorry, i got a bit lost then, can’t ignore a pretty face,  ’ he admitted with a nervous chuckle, as he attempted to come up with an excuse quickly. ‘  enjoy your treats.  ’ he smirked awkwardly, before he began to turn on his heel to walk back behind the counter.

screen lighting up at the table that Enzio claimed for himself, he scrolled through a couple of missed calls and messages he would definitely forget to answer later but still ignored for the most part. If they had been of any importance, surely they’d call again or remind him anyway. Theoretically, at least. Not that he was anti-social...just in need of some downtime, really. And, as the bowl of food was set in front of him, in need of something to silence the growing pits of hell in his stomach. Enzio looked up with a cocked brow, slightly amused and definitely surprised at the random compliment. “Damn, I wasn’t aware good food comes with impeccable customer service these days. Is that part of the job interview?”

“  no ! no, no, no, no, NO !  ”     a bang, a crash, and then the sound of something shattering.     “  i – i am so sorry. i’ll pay for it, i promise.  ”

“Are you okay?” The question fell from his lips instantly upon impact. An instinctive reaction to bumping into something that undoubtedly was another person. Then the familiar sound of a phone tumbling onto concrete floor rang through his ears for a second - clumsiness or a lack of grip had claimed too many mobile phones of his in his lifespan already. Enzio grimaced, the corners of his mouth tucked into his cheeks as he crouched to pick the mistreated object off the ground. Not without waving his hand in a downplaying motion to let the woman he yet had to look up to know that it was fine. “I’ve dropped it into the toilet before and it survived just fine...well, I mean, a clean one. I wouldn’t have - anyway, I’m just trying to say that it’s survived worse and has an incredible survival instinct for some scrap of plastic and metal."
